Went to buy garbage bag, they are out. Saw rice (8kg) for 14 which was a good price. But since I was going to go to another location of the same chain I figure I'll pick it up there. No garbage bag in second location either. Fine, I'll just buy the rice. It's 20 at the second location. So I ended up going back to the first location to get the rice :colbert:

How much gas did you waste driving?

Went to the Morenci Mine today. It's big, not big like you're thinking big but really big. Even by copper pit standards, it's big. ~8600 hectares, 21K+ acres, 33+ square miles and 2600 ft (800m) deep in spots. It's bigger than the Bingham Pit but not as deep.

I just had my Chase credit card replaced maybe 45 days ago, and I just got a email notification that someone charged $450+ for a order at Walmart.com.

I've really only used the new card a handful of times to pay for gas, an order at AAFES, my Spectrum cable bill, and physically in a Walmart store. And yet my card was either compromised at the places I used it, or Chase has some kind of processing vulnerability.

I think when I get the new replacement card, I'm only going to use it at one location for a few months, and see if I can figure out where the issue is. I do know that AAFES (for some reason) doesn't seem to encrypt any of their confirmation/update emails being to sent to me in Gmail, and based on the dates of the fraudulent charges appeared, they are the retailer I will focus on first.

Fucking scammers/hackers. 😡

That would suck, were you actually on the hook for interest or did they cover that once they reversed it? I'd end up paying it with my credit line since I always bring my balance to zero but it still means adding a bigger balance to the credit line. I guess in that case it would be best to leave it on the card, assuming they will cover interest.

Compromised that quickly? How secure is your device that you used the card on? I would be looking for keyloggers and the like....

LoL 450. I had 5k fraudulent charges in a few hours. Took a couple of months to clear it up.
The last time it was compromised, they charged several $1.00 charges titled "Google.com", but since it was an international charge, I received a notification. Whoever got the new card number, the $450 charge was a big increase for me.

From how Chase handles my fraud charges, once I report them, they remove the charge and any interest while they investigate the fraud claim. If they find in your favor, you are in the clear for the charge and interest.

The issue for me is the investigations can take a long time, and it's irritating having to have the card replaced. The last time, I had to go and cancel all the automatic charges for things like my cable bill, streaming services like Netflix, etc. It just wastes time trying to remember all the auto debit sites.

I keep my stuff pretty secure. No browsing the naughty sites on my PCs. 😛

The only places I used it at online was my Spectrum bill and AAFES.

The last time it happened, I switched by auto debit places over to a different credit card, and there have been no issues of fraud ever with those ones.

However, I need to figure out where the issue is. I do know I will likely be paying for my gas in store from now on to rule out skimmers at the pump.

That's the part that always worries me too when it happens is, HOW are they getting the number, ex: is it a business database that got hacked, or my computer? Ideally I should do a full clean install every time it happens but it's such a pain having to start all over and reconfigure everything etc.

I like to think I run a pretty tight ship but who knows with how sophisticated hacks are now days. Just look at how easily FB, Google etc can track our every move even when we're not even on their servers. So imagine what hackers can do.

And yeah having to update CC everywhere is a pain too. Not as bad as changing banks and updating preauthorized payments though, holy crap that is a pain. Most places still want you to send a fax like it's 1999.

They are supposed to reverse all interest as well. We'll see next statement whether it is fully fixed.

Called back today and spoke to Chase's fraud department about the charge.

Even though I couldn't see it on my side since my card was frozen when I called in late last night, they attempted to do another charge of $217 early this morning, but that payment was declined.

Now I just have to wait for yet another new card to arrive, and spend some time trying to figure out where the problem/issue is. 😱

You'll never figure it out. Don't waste your time, just watch your transactions for the next little while.

Today I learned that the Morenci Mine is half again as big as Manhattan, NY.

I would focus on anyplace you physically swiped the card and entered a PIN code ESPECIALLY places like Walmart where they're getting super-anal about shoplifting at the register. (and thus have cameras pointing at every checkout making it simple to get your PIN)

Also depressingly skimmer-technology has advanced to the point now that even if you're looking for them you might not notice one installed.

It's a credit card, not my debit so I never have to use a pin.

I never trusted using my bank debit card for things paying for gas at the pump, or for paying for things online (I don't want to risk my bank account balance being possibly tied up to scammers/hackers).

But there is an issue somewhere.

I think the CC networks could crunch their data and figure out where the hacks are getting the card data far more efficiently than consumers could guess at this stuff.

That's why I have 3 checking accounts at 3 different banks! 😉

(1) Primary/"real" checking that I use for bills and stuff and the only checking account where I keep a running balance of more than $5. (also no Zelle/Cash-app etc)

(2) Dedicated to online "cash/debit" purchases.... I keep $1 in this account and do ATM deposits or transfers as required.

(3) Specific to Paypal only. (recently closed since I dropped PP because they SUCK !!!)

I bought a used refrigerator part for my refrigerator off of ebay. Seller specializes in used kitchen appliance parts and said in the listing that the parts are all inspected by professionals and deemed to be in working condition. Of course the part I bought came broken. Thought I could save $100 buying used and save the environment by buying used but now I have a broken part and seller has $130 of my dollars.

Talk to ebay and get it refunded.

Bolded all I needed to see... no worries you're good. (BUYERS word is bond on Ebay!)

Obviously contact the seller first and give them a chance to make it right but if they fail to do so Ebay CS should cover you.... IME ebay only screws over sellers!

Continuing my Morenci kick: The Morenci Mine is actually 3800 feet deep, so twice as deep as the Freedom Tower is tall. The Port of New York handles ~160,000 tons of cargo per day. The Morenci Mine moves 700,000 tons of rock per day, including processing 150,000 tons of ore.

This is under Red Squirrel's land :colbert:

Kidd is the deepest base metal mine in the world. The bottom of No.4 shaft at Kidd Creek Mine D is 3,014.3 metres (9,889 ft) below the surface,[13] 2,735 metres (8,973 ft) below sea level, the deepest accessible non-marine point on earth.[14][15]

The Kidd Mine is 55°C at the bottom. ~35% of the operating cost of the mine is spent on ventilation. Adiabatic heating raises the temperature of surface air by 30°C just by moving it to the bottom of the mine so A/C is needed. This is a major reason robotics are coming to mining; the costs and complications of simply keeping miners alive at depth are so high.
