Yesterday, my work laptop pops up a message stating that the boot drive is corrupted and I need to reboot to repair the drive. My keen sense of "bad things are about to happen" goes into overdrive so I backup everything to an external RAID. Backing up takes so long that I sort of forgot about the rebooting thing. At the end of the day, I power down and pack up the laptop. This morning, I turn it back on and the drive repair runs automatically. Pass 1… pass 2… pass 3… 100% done. All is good. Goes to the Win thinking spinning dots thing. And spins and spins and spins. I give it a good while but no change. So I hold down the "f' you, I'm a human and you're a thing" button and it keeps spinning. The laptop is bricked. I use my phone to look up how to hard reset and check my email. An email informs me that the company helpdesk is down so I decide that "do first, apologize later" is now a valid strategy and perform the hard reset. Take off the back cover, disconnect the battery, hold the power button for awhile, reconnect the battery, replace the cover, and turn it on. Blessed Mother Mary and her Haploid Son, it worked! My expectation is that the boot drive will be dead dead within a month.
