Was at Costco today and they have had these six self-checkout lanes for quite a while now. At first people would only go through them with not many items. You'd actually self checkout. Then Costco started adding staff to man like three of the six self-checkout lanes. They have a portable scanner in their hand and they basically check you out even though it's self-checkout. There is no sign there saying you can only go with x amount of items or less. I live alone so I really never have more than 10 items, so I always go to self-checkout. I could care less if an employee is available to help scan my items or not. The self checkout lanes fit three in the same space where one regular checkout lane goes. There isn't a lot of space to put items to scan. It's common sense this is a place to go when you don't have too much shit.

Anyways lately I've been seeing people go through them with lots more shit in their cart, because people are dumb and annoying. Today I saw a lady with a cart almost full, and not of big things, like say cases of water, but like tons of small and medium sized things, and the Costco employee is scanning everything. It's a slow process because they don't have a surface to put all those items on, and separate what's been scanned vs what has not been scanned. They have to do it all while it's in the cart, lifting shit up, etc... So the lady that's scanning my shit I ask her, is there a limit to how many items you can bring to self-checkout? She says it's supposed to be 20.

I'm like well people are going with way more and it must be a real PITA to scan when you don't have a surface area to work with. She said yes it is. I say do you tell them about the item limit? She says yes, and they get mad and rude. So they just do it for them. I'm like fuck these mofos.

We, sadly, don't live close to a Costco but Sams Club lets you checkout on your phone. So we scan things as we put them in the cart, pay on our phone and walk past the long check outlines to the guy who checks your receipt.

Just lost network connectivity at work... I have zero visibility to anything nor access to any phone numbers to even try to call someone. I almost feel like a switch somewhere died. External network works so worse case scenario I will plug in to external and VPN in... if the VPN is accessible.

Fun fun...

Going to go look to see if I can find what switch I'm on and go from there.

We were about to leave for the airport at 6 this morning for a 2 week trip and I notice water coming out from under our wood floor, look in the utility closet and there's water all around our drain. Had to cancel our outgoing flight and no idea if we'll even be able to go at all.

Facebook is down. I need to post in a specific group that's time-sensitive, for like the only time ever.

Consider yourself lucky you noticed. A friend had to gut his house after a bad leak/flood while away on vacation.

Dang, that sucks.

I put wi-fi water leak detectors at the rental. It was VRBO and could be weeks before anyone was in, especially during covid. I put the noisemakers at home, under the sinks/by the hot water heater.

True to form, the noisemaker's batteries start to chirp in the middle of the night, just like the smoke detectors.

My employer is mandating getting the COVID vaccine, no problem. They are asking employees to load proof of vaccination to the company safety reporting system. The system was never designed to be secure let alone designed to house HIPPA information. I think I won't go first on reporting.

WTH, huh! I think smoke alarm product devs are evil geniuses. That happened to us recently in the Master - which has a vaulted ceiling. I got so mad that I threw a shoe at it in the middle of the night and broke it. Still haven't fixed it .

Isn't shopping at Costco a sign that you're not as first world as you'd like to be? Or it could be that rich people like to save money too.

I'm not rich. But still, Costco has some high quality products, and plenty of people that do make good money shop there. Costco is kind of literally a signifier of being in the first world.
