I'm on a late conference call with indescribably old people. We're ten minutes in and they haven't gotten past discussion the conf call software. I'm leaning toward expressing technical difficulties and hanging up.

I wonder how hard it would be to write a small program that dropped packets. It could be user selectable from 'mild nuisance' to 'total hardware failure' depending on need.

Despite all this covid stuff going on my company still insists on sending out forced reboots at random. Our camera machine just got forced rebooted. These are hard reboots too, not a proper shut down.

Use the mute button a few times then turn off wifi on your laptop. Perfect simulation of a network problem without any coding.

They might know if you hit mute, depending on the app. (in zoom it shows).

It would actually be kinda fun to build a hardware packet dropper, it could even be useful to test protocols to see how they handle a bad connection. Maybe an arduino that turns some relays on/off to disable the pins for short bursts.

This actually happen with our offshore people, they first show mute unmute a few times then they drop off.
A few min later they rejoin citing vpn issues.

Anyone else hate the current state of two factor auth? Why can't there be a standard? Everybody seems to do their own thing and require to install some stupid app. I need to do something for work and they require us to login to this system that uses two factor auth and now I need to install some app on my personal phone. WHY?! Why can't they make this stuff simpler instead of requiring an app for every system? Why not use text or at least make a standard so that I only need 1 app and not a billion different ones.

I can't "just use [program of choice]" because not every site uses that particular app and won't always offer a choice.

And let's not get into the fact that this stuff is not really easy to backup. What happens if you lose your phone or get a new phone?

Had an option for landline so went that. It just calls my cell instead. I hate having so many apps for nothing. Don't know what kind of data harvesting they do in the background. Can't trust anything anymore.

If you're interested and have an android phone, I'm pretty sure that it can do automatic backups for you. But to do that, I think you need to have a gmail account so you can use the cloud storage that comes with it.

If you have an Android phone, I'm pretty sure you can use it together with a Google Gmail account to do automatic, periodic backups.

The reason it works is that the Gmail acct comes with a few gigabytes of Google cloud storage that's used as the target of the backups. I don't know if the system will ONLY work if you use a Google storage product but it really doesn't matter since the Gmail acct is free

I would rather be able to backup to a storage medium that I actually control though. I don't really consider it a true backup unless I have it on hand. Cloud can be a compliment to local backup but I would never rely on only that. Like I want a file, not some voodoo sync thing that "just works" until it decides not to because of an update or whatever.

I just find they really need to make a standard for this stuff instead of relying on proprietary apps/platforms.

Welp...trying to remove the inside panel that covers the area that ices up...still solid ice at the topof the panel. I have a hair dryer and small fan inside the fridge....HOPING to that it out enough so I can get it apart to (a) clean the drain line, and (b) clean and totally defrost the cooling fins. PITA.

Late reply, "fixed?"

The AT writers are running out of words.

"This seems to be a binned or revisioned variant of the Dimensity 1000 announced last year…"

So far, so good...Of course, I still might have to do it all again and replace all the defrost parts...around $150.

First off (which you realize now) is that Samsung fridges rank up the top of biggest piles of crap. Ice makers in them are laughable and of course well the defrost bug. Pretty crazy to have a class action against you.

Actually bought an extended warranty on mine. Ran into this twice. First time was at night and I was like, well need to get this get taken care of now so I saw the youtube and thawed it myself.

Second time it was so bad there was a quarter inch of ice on the bottom of the fridge. Called the place and they sent someone out. He worked like a ninja since he has probably done it a thousand times before. Had a little steam box to thaw it out.

He leaps behind the fridge and replaced a couple parts. Hard to describe, but they were two of them. They looked like small plastic/rubber funnels. Said Samsung redesigned them. Showed me the old ones and they were nasty.

Since then (probably been five years) it has been problem free. And now I'm going to find a large piece of wood to knock on.

Yeah, it's disappointing how bad refrigerators are nowadays. It's not just Samsung, although they seem to be the worst of the "big name" brands.
I remember the fridges of yesteryear that were built to last 20 years or more.
I checked and cleaned the defroster drain tubes in the back. They were fine, but, since I was already there...might as well clean them.

Went to Sam's Club a couple days ago (no Costco within 2 hours drive) and the meat section was almost bare. Never ever saw it so bare before and I was a member (on and off) for many years.

Oh and gas prices are going up. The cheapest regular is $1.29/gallon. Up from $1.14/gallon just a few days ago.

The eco wash cycle on my dishwasher evidently doesn't work anymore. Dishes still have caked on food remains everywhere. Glasses have bits of food inside.

I just started a normal wash cycle but I'm not sure what I'm hoping that'll achieve. Maybe magic will fix it.

I'm terrified of having to get a new fridge. The only features I want are it gets cold, and a light comes on when I open the door, and I'm flexible on that last one. Seems like new stuff is fancier, and more delicate with more creative ways of not working.
