I work in an all glass office building and it is hot as hell in here all the time from the sunlight. Even with the blinds closed its nearly 80 degrees.

I didn't research my new wifi purchase. It said it supported linux, so I bought it. Turns out it's a realtek chipset, and only has a non free driver. I got it working, but I feel dirty :^(

There's bad luck. Then there's the blood-moon-four-fifths-of-the-way-through-the-calamity-ganon-boss-battle bad luck.

Had a weird failure on my game server that I have no idea how it happened. Long story short, all the items got wiped, and they were also wiped in the database. The database is "write only" meaning that the game server holds everything in memory and only writes to the DB, the only time the DB is read is when initially loading the world. So for the items to be gone in game AND in the DB is VERY baffling. I restored a backup and all is good but now it's going to bug me because I have no idea what happened.

Paying for drivers just seems ridiculous to me.
That should be included with the hardware cost.

There's two jobs at my company that are more up my alley. One is a server job, and it's internal, which means it's non customer facing. It's for internal server/network only. The other job is for networking, which would be a really interesting job, they do all sorts of network related deployments and maintenance from Cisco stuff to IP, VPNs, Voip etc...

It's super rare for my company to post new jobs let alone two in my field, they've been laying off a lot and downsizing every department. So now I need to decide if I apply to one or not, as it will be the last chance I get for probably a long time.

But, I'm also really happy where I am. It's 40h weeks instead of 37ish, so more money, it's also shift work so I get way more time off. And night shifts are nice as you don't need to get up early. There's also lot of BS going on at my job lately though. Decisions decisions....

I think I'll stick to my current job and just ride out the BS though. I really can't imagine willingly going back to an 8x5 job. I may as well ride this job out for as long as possible. My fear is always that they close us down though, a NOC can pretty much be moved anywhere at a whim. But then again so can any other job that is at a desk.

Oh no, I didn't pay for them. They were gratis, but not libre. I don't like proprietary software on my system, and I don't like supporting companies that don't release source code. Intel and atheros have free(libre) drivers. I wish I had gotten one of their chipsets.

I don't even get the point of keeping drivers proprietary. A hardware company should concentrate on hardware, the driver just happens to be needed to make the hardware work - as is often half assed. Why prevent people from properly experiencing the hardware because of the driver. I have run into hardware I had to abandon not because the hardware was unstable but because the driver was. If the driver was open source that would not be an issue. I have two video cards that were originally for a SLI setup but the driver for them is so unstable (even with just 1 card in system) in both Linux and Windows that they are sitting on a shelf now.

Pulled one of my original NES out of storage to let the kids play some classic games but it did't want to work so I had to go dig another one out. I really wanted one of the NES Classic systems but no Nintendo says I don't need one.
