Suppose to go shopping with my sister but not sure when so pretty much waiting until I get a text. She has a ridiculously busy schedule so it's the first time this month where we can finally go together. We both have no clue what to get my parents so will try to find something.

My calculator crashed a couple weeks ago, and I lost a bunch of data. I thought I had the bulk of it on the computer, so no major loss. Today I found out different... The draftsman was looking for a job on the computer, and it wasn't there. Gone in the ether... Lost about four hours of tedious, boring field work, and I'll have to do it again. Life sucks...

Think I may get a cheap ass Samsung Tab A. I don't have a smartphone and there's free Wifi everywhere now. It's not that expensive but my history with tablets is bad.

I usually download every day, but I didn't in this case. That also doesn't take care of in-field crashes when the machine spazzes before I get to the office.

The software on the calculator is for surveying. The original releases were written in user and system rpl. It was slow, but rock stable. Later releases(which I'm using) use system rpl and machine code. It increased speed substantially, but added fragility. When things go wrong, they can go really wrong.

It didn't help that I was using a flaky calculator(hp48). I was trying to get as much out of it as I could cause I only have a couple reliable spares, and the used market is selling them at list price+(~$275 avg) for mid 90s hardware. I don't want to shelve a unit that's only sorta bad, cause then I'll just have a bunch of half assed machines. I've switched to a spare now. It was getting too problematic.

Shit. My mouse hand has mild frostbite again. Didn't happen during the -10 C days, happened on the ~0 C day.

I want coffee but I might have to go out, but don't know when. Waiting for a text. If I have coffee and end up having to go out then I'll have to pee.

I never take my phone in the bathroom just feels gross to do that. But I was talking more about once I'm at the mall then I'd have to stop to pee all the time. Turns out I'm not going tonight though, so just made coffee. :D

Just realized... what kind of mall exists in Timmins? Or is it 2 towns over?

We have an actual mall, actually two, but the downtown one is mostly dead. Mostly offices and stuff at this point with the odd store that somehow manages to stay in business. Generally for any serious shopping people tend to go to Sudbury though but there is some half decent shopping here too.

It's not the mall that collapsed, is it?

And thanks to whomever... I'm getting Chinese language real-estate ads on this page now.

Nope no collapse in this area that I know of. Oh that was Elliot Lake I think.

This is ours: http://timminssquare.com/

I like the fact that they used Word Press and never bothered to change the default favicon. :p

Well, looks like you have the exact same stores as the typical malls in Toronto. Only thing you're missing is a Best Buy, but I'm going to guess there is one within a five minute drive, probably on the other side of the parking lot.

Yep we have Best Buy across the street lol. That's newish, like maybe been 15ish years. Used to be a strip joint/hotel there, then they tore it down and built a Future Shop that eventually turned to Best Buy.

There's also a local electronics store right next to Best Buy, and it's great to see they're still doing well despite the competition. They have been around for a while so I think they can manage to compete decently even with a chain. They also carry lot of stuff that Best Buy does not, like computer parts. Needed thermal paste once, did not really want to make an online order just for that. Turns out that place had it.

The heating in my apartment stopped working this afternoon. Landlord came within 15 min and changed the thermostat and left. Well the heat still didn't work. So I left to go about my business. I get home 6 hours later and in my foyer are 5 space heaters in boxes from the landlord. Being the genius that I am I figured out immediately the heat wasn't fixed. Turns out it wasn't the fucking thermostat but the actual HVAC unit that busted and they couldn't get a service guy out here today to fix it.

I went out and came back and decided to fire up a space heater in my room for my evening stroll on the internet. I know little about space heaters but this variety has a fan you can't turn off. It sounds like a fucking hair dryer having sex with a tornado. Plus space heaters spontaneously combust and kill people. Tonight when I sleep no way I am leaving that death machine on. Let's see if the HVAC gets fixed tomorrow or I'll be having 3rd world problems. Luckily it's only 39 degrees out so not too bad.

Fuck!

Haha sucks. You'd think in this day and age they could make space heaters more efficient/safer. I guess it's all about building down stuff to a price and make as cheap as possible. Capitalism.

Actually I should install some baseboard heaters in my basement, while I'm in a position to do so. They are pretty cheap, and would act as backup heat if the furnace fails. At least could keep pipes from freezing.

Watch your amperage, especially if your electrical system isn't modern. I'm not an electrician...

Also plug them straight to the wall and if you do use extensions make sure they are 14 gauge, or 12.

Baseboard heaters tend to be fairly safe though, they are designed to be passive so no fan that can fail and cause the whole thing to spontaneously combust. Kind of wonder why they don't just design space heaters to work based on that same type of element.

We have Amazon prime. Ordered item (George Foreman grill for Christmas present), item arrives on day Amazon drops price %25.

Contact Amazon customer service. They refuse to refund difference.

Now we are sending the unopened item back for a full refund. I also have to find a alternate gift for my parents.

First world problems; Having too new of a house to where there is constantly dust on everything. Having too many vehicles to keep them all in the garage, film of dust all the time on them. Several houses going up at once and street full of vehicles. In front, one both sides, and behind me. So much noise when I try to sleep. Ugh. At least they're doing it quick. Two weeks ago the house in front was a concrete slab.
