I have three dead PS3s and one working PS3. Am I just unlucky?
Got a 60GB launch unit that originally developed the red/yellow light of death in 2010. Now it has a different problem and a dead Blu-ray drive. I ruined the BD drive because the console stupidly doesn't let you eject a disc when it fails and it had a rented BD in there. The drive reset/alignment procedure for reassembly wasn't known back then so I had to use trial and error to get all the mechanical parts aligned right. At some point during the trial and error I must have blown a fuse on the controller board because the drive is totally dead now. As for the original problem, I paid to have it re-balled with lead solder and it came back with a different problem: The fan ramps up to sound like a vacuum cleaner the moment you turn it on and it shuts down almost immediately.
The 20GB launch unit boots with no video over HDMI or multi-out. I've never found a fix for this. Even sent it in to a pro and had it sent right back to me.
The 80GB 2007 model with partial PS2 BC was also reballed for the yellow/red light of death and also came back with the overheating problem. It doesn't even have enough time to finish booting before it shuts down.
We eventually just bought another 60GB unit refurbished on Newegg and it is still working today. I don't know if it was reballed with lead solder. If not, it would probably fail again so we have used it very sparingly.
Moral of the story: Avoid SpitFire Mods. He can't fix jack.
