Someone smashed our mailbox off the post yesterday. Kinda needed a new one anyway as the previous owner was dumb and drilled holes in the top to affix a sign and water just leaks through there, don't feel like putting on a new one today though.

I stayed at a Mariott brand hotel last week that advertised free Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi was indeed free - at a speed of 5 mbps. You could pay $5/day extra for "super fast" Wi-Fi.

Advertising free Wi-Fi like that should be illegal.

My WiFi has been slow on my mobile phone. Too lazy to reset the router and wifi so I've just been using 5G. Fortunately I have unlimited data.

Paid something on my debit card last night, in Paypal. Bank acct. shows funds deducted from "avail balance", but still in "current balance". So funds were put on hold to cover the charge.

Fast forward to this morning, Paypal sens me a text that my charge didn't go through, insufficient funds. Probably because the amount was no longer in my avail balance, because it was put on hold FOR THIS CHARGE!

Either Paypal is putting a DIFFERENT charge through (different xaction ID), or my bank is ignoring Paypal telling them to drop the hold on funds, so that they can put the actual charge through, and my bank is only letting the holds "age off".

I end up getting a $300 hold put on my acct., when my ISP auto pay of $90 goes through now, too, because I once owed them $300 for non-returned equipment (I was too lazy to return it).

My work computer has 8GB of RAM. The operating system and corporate spyware security software consume over 4GB of that RAM. Opening the basic stuff leaves me with less than 2GB to run any productivity software. There is an empty RAM slot. IT will not authorize more RAM, period. Our IT people are the kind of folks that get suspicious if a user knows how to open Task Manager.

That sounds like a pain, reminds me a lot of my work. We keep getting "upgraded" to new PCs every couple years and they always pick the bottom of the barrel specs for these machines. 8GB of ram and 500GB 5400 rpm drive and core 2 duo or similar processor. We managed to convince IT to get us better machines so we can actually do our job and they actually agreed surprisingly. Before we had to expense parts ourselves and do our own upgrade and it was one of those "gray area" things. But every time they do these rollouts it's the same story because whatever machine they are trying to push to us is a downgrade.

Actually, planned to do just that. Gonna ride the bike instead and suck up some pollen.

You're welcome.
Speaking of pollen... Just a couple of days b/4 you made this post, my allergies started up - and this is in New Hampshire. I was so pissed because they don't usually start for another 3 weeks. FML.

Realised that the thermometer on the wall clock, that says 17C, is directly over this monitor, and the other thermometer on the other side of the room says it's 12C in here. Meaning I've been giving misleading replies to the "what temperature is it where you are" thread.

You need to go edit all your posts now to componsate for the difference.

..And I thought I kept it cold in my house lol.

Yeah, though today is the day the home heating price cap is hugely increased, meaning heating bills are probably going to double again.

Should really be in P&N, but this is the reason why Spring can't come fast enough for me. Will presumably get worse if Russia cuts off Germany's gas supply, as they are threatening...

The chancellor, Rishi Sunak, will have to do more to help struggling households with soaring energy bills, experts said on Friday, with the average annual gas and electricity bill poised to double inside a year to £2,600.

The average household dual fuel tariff jumped from £1,278 to £1,971 at midnight, as energy regulator raised the price cap by 54% on bills to reflect sky-high wholesale gas prices.

Analysts at Cornwall Insight, who predicted the £1,971 price cap within a 3% margin of error, said they now expect the next price cap increase, due in October, to result in the average tariff jumping to £2,599.92.

This would mean bills having doubled inside a year, it said, piling pressure on the chancellor to help the poorest households, who experts have warned face a choice between heating and eating.

Natural gas seems to be one of the only bills that has not gone up for me. I do wonder if I am on borrowed time though, I feel at some point it's going to skyrocket due to some political thing. I often ponder getting a wood stove as backup but don't really have a good place for one. I could maybe do a very small stove, it would probably still be enough to get the house to a decent temp.

Threaten to quit unless you get 16GB RAM. It's the only way, trust me.

"Streaming Overload: Viewers Feel Overwhelmed by Too Many Choices, Nielsen Survey Finds"

I got an idea. Why not bundle the streaming sites into one package... maybe offer a box to connect to them too?

No water throughout the "city." Stuff is getting cancelled - all the schools, for instance.
30" water main ruptured overnight. Hmm . . . looks like a pretty publicly-accessible spot - tampering?
Boil notice issued for the area.

Kitchen faucet started streaming a bit now, so . . . that's one outlet flowing right now. 1/3 strength. Rest of the house fixtures won't flow.
So water access will be . . . touch and go . . . no timeframe yet on fixing the pipe.

Woah pretty crazy.

The water line that feeds my block ruptured last winter, that was fun. I had to bring snow inside and melt it so I can flush the toilet.

Woah that sucks. How did that end up happening, some cumulative errors? That's always my worse nightmare, to get audited and end up owing some insane amount.

RSUs. They only automatically sell to cover income taxes at a flat 22% rate apparently and it needed to be higher. Should have been paying attention. Hard to complain about it hence FWP thread!

Been there, done that. You have to tell yourself it is a good problem to have.

For some real fun, look at the total amount is taxes you paid in 2021. YIKES!!!
(This is in reply to Repoman. Stupid posting on my phone, did not quote him)
