Have to sit through the second day of mandatory OSHA training even though I'm not a 'physical labor union' guy. Meh.

Got strung along to go help with construction stuff at the local Bible camp, so I'm texting this guy I don't know to try to coordinate. Somehow it's now turning into me having to drive 2+ hours from here to go help a guy pour concrete for his house, but it's not clear for sure if I have to go. I'm so confused right now. I so don't want to be stuck having to get up at a ridiculous time just to drive there.

I hate how I always seem to get dragged in these weird situations. I don't even know any of the people involved.

My system BSOD'd twice within a couple minutes of booting up. *Sigh* Haven't had this problem in months, and I can't blame the Windows 10 upgrade this time around. Haven't changed/installed anything in a while unless you count Steam patches.

And I want to hump my old CFLs to the store for disposal but it's hot as hell and forecast says thunderstorms for the next 2 days.

Well turns out I only need to go to the camp for 1, not go help with the concrete, so yay! A first world victory, I guess? lol.

That also means I can stay up later for Perseid showers, if the sky clears up, which it looks like is happening.

Utility is doing shit soon and turning off the hood's power. My technical side is telling me to unplug my TV and computer and modems... my don't give a shit anymore side is telling me to just turn off the surge protectors, back my hard drive up, and hope for the best. I could use a new TV/computer...

Tried fixing a remote server with dying drives. failed. Now I have to drive to the remote location (300 miles R/T) in some blistering heat tomorrow.
That went about as smooth as 5 miles of gravel road, LOL. First install was broken, It looked OK but no matter how I looked around it would not bring the NIC up on reboot. Reinstalled from scratch and it was fine. Then I had issues with the configs for my rsync backup application. Long day :)

Try aiming a small fan at your PSU. I have a similar problem in the summer so I have a fan blowing on the PSU. I don't know why it's an issue. the PSU has plenty of power to the computer. but it still wigs out.

My AC was running and Hardware Monitor was showing regular/good RPMs on the PSU fan. It may be on its way out considering that I bought it around 2009, but it's pretty lightly loaded -- 525 W capacity, probably 300 W max load.

In other news, I accidentally ran a NiMH battery down to 0.78 volts. It was in a flashlight. Weird because the second battery in the light was still showing 1.1 volts and the light was working normally a week ago when I checked -- two batteries were charged full together.

I had wall switch burn out today. It was a rotary dimmer and it was producing sparks and flames. Soon after, the power for the whole street went out. Really weird coincidence.

Moral of the story, never run heavy loads on a dimmer switch. These often rated for only 300 or maybe 500watts. So running even a small 5k btu a/c on it was enough to burn it out.

I should have known that since it had happened to me once before with a normal wall switch. I made sure to replace it with a 1500w non-dimmer switch. I just wonder if I reversed the polarity. Instead of 2 hot wires and a common, it was just a hot and a common - black and white. I wired the black to the black terminal and white to the brass one.

^A non-light fixture switch with a dimmer? Never seen one before.

Actually, I've almost never seen dimmer switches -- live in a 1915-ish house.

My last apartment and my current home have a couple outlets controlled by light switches. This is often done so you can connect a bedside lamp and operate it by wall switch as you enter a room and device switch when you go to sleep.

Dimmer switches have an interesting way of failing too, sometimes they just turn into a regular switch, but other times they go all wonky.

Went to replace one at my sister's house recently, she said it just stopped working, I thought it was odd that it would just die like that, but ok. So I end up doing it live because of reasons. When I was left with the two bare wires, just for fun I decided to tap them together expecting the light to turn on. Instead, I got lot of sparks. Weird. Long story short(no pun intended) the light fixture itself actually shorted out and is why the dimmer died. It's kinda a good thing I did it live because I would have just blindly changed the dimmer, went to turn it on, and blown that one too. I disconnected the fixture and told her she'll have to go pick another one... guess I'll be installing that too. I could have tried to fix the fixture but did not really feel like working in an awkward situation over the dining room table while trying not to make a mess.

Yeah that is kinda interesting, I guess the idea is that you can plug an incandescent lamp into the outlet, but problem is when you go to plug something else.... You could use it as a crude variable speed for the vacuum too. :p I'm actually curious now if there's any code that would cover switching outlets with a dimmer... I have seen normal switches control them though, it's fairly typical in bedrooms, usually it's wired so the top or bottom is switched and the other is not. So you can say plug a lamp and an alarm clock and only the lamp is switched.

Speaking of alarm clocks, my power flickered TWICE this morning, and kept resetting the clock. I need to put the clock on UPS... I got up later than I wanted because of that.

We got three SNES Retro Receivers a few days ago but my bro can't use them on his 3+ day play-thru of a particular game. Unlike standard controllers, they screw up the game when you hot-plug them. :(

I know I won't get seating on a Sunday morning at the coffee shop I want to go to so I'm just going to have to settle for Starbucks instead.
