You have not yet mastered strategic incompetence. It is important to be good at your job and very good at the job you would like to move into. It is equally important to not be good at stuff that will derail your career. Employees generally want to be of service in anyway they can but doing so may leave one stuck in support positions forever.
I used to see this happen to women with engineering degrees. They would step up to tackle GIS issues, data management, or other non-career path tasks only to find themselves stuck in non-professional positions.
