You're out in the boonies, right? Look for a co-op, or csa. They've been growing in popularity down here, and you might have something close to you. You may even be able to work fields yourself. Set the heat to high, then stuck his entire forearm 1" to 2" above the flame. This is the same retard that set the wrong burner to max then left the building with just me in it over the summer.

While yelling at him to stop, he rolled his sleeve up, and I saw a ball of lint fall onto the burner and immediately ignite. A few seconds later, the burner started glowing red -- indicator that it was pushing 500 C. That's past the ignition temperature of essentially every god damn plastic -- he was wearing a synthetic winter coat and probably synthetic fleece.

I think there are farms and stuff that sell chicken, eggs etc, but no idea how to even buy from them, they don't really have store fronts or anything. It's more a thing where you need to know a guy who knows a guy, and he might be able to get you some at some point, type of deal. Though my dad does know a guy... I'd have to check. He gets fresh eggs, I imagine the same farm slaughters chickens every now and then too.

If I had a big property I'd probably look into producing more of my own food actually. At least plant based food, as it's less work than meat.

You can't really trust store bought food these days, and it's going to get worse when the TPP passes.

I'm seriously considering getting chickens. I think it would be a fun hobby, and they don't take up much space. I'm thinking two silkies at a time would give me all the eggs I need and a 6 bay coop would let me keep them til their dead with replacements to lay eggs in the meantime.

I couldn't slaughter an animal that relied on me for sustenance. Hunting is fine cause it's them against me, but killing something that looks forward to your presence strikes me as duplicitous, and a violation of trust. Imo, violating trust is the worst crime that can be committed.

I probably couldn't slaughter an animal, period. But I eat meat because someone else is doing the dirty work for me.

Eating an animal that died of natural causes wouldn't be an issue to me... but there's probably a reason why we don't usually eat animals that died of disease or old age.

It's fenced in and I grew up around having chickens and have an old rabbit hutch could convert to a coop pretty easy.

you need to process those older chickens somehow, though. They are much better providing meat for you and your family than rotting under a cute little gravestone in your backyard.

You can always hire a local to do the killing and butchering for you if you're concerned about the survivors associating you with death--which is a legit concern.

It's my understanding old birds are tough. They wouldn't go to waste. I'd leave them out for the foxes and vultures, but while alive, I'd give them the best life I could.

Nuts I think are high in protein. Not sure how easy it is to grow indoors though. Though if I went semi off grid I'd probably just get my meat from other sources but not raise it myself.

But even if I did raise for meat I think the biggest thing is to provide them a happy life the whole time, and when it comes time to slaughter it's something quick and painless and not in front of the others.

I would probably keep chickens and goats/cows for eggs and dairy. Not sure how long they actually produce that stuff before they physically can't anymore though... Otherwise, lots of grains and vegetables.

Other problem: I have to look into laws dealing with mentally ill people who are dangers to themselves or others. I'm 90% set on getting someone committed or non-voluntarily held just to have them diagnosed properly. Unfortunately, that will probably get my name into a system and raise red flags during background checks.

Got any flea markets around? Most have vendors who treat it like a farmer's market. Lots of fresh eggs and produce around here.

Found out a box of my moderate priced and expensive wines was gone. Turns out my wife gave away the more expensive ones when visiting someone for dinner or to someone feeding the cats a couple of days while we were away, and used the moderate priced ones for cooking. That was a few hundred bucks' worth of wine.

I guess I'm a cheap bastard but I don't think it's necessary to bring a $40 bottle of wine over when you visit a regular friend for dinner, unless perhaps it's some special occasion. And we don't need $15-20 bottles of wine for cooking for ourselves.

So, I went out and bought a box of $8-12 wines that she can use for cooking. They say that if you use crap wine, your cooked dishes won't be very good, but these $10 wines are quite reasonable and quite drinkable, so good enough.

Definite first world problem.

BTW, the woman at the liquor store says she uses cheaper boxed wines for her cooking and says works just fine. As long as it's not super low end crappy wine.
