Having a non-surgical procedure done Friday morning, but since it involves general anesthesia, it's performed in (and scheduled by) the surgical department. Procedure will take the Doctor maybe 5 minutes. It's scheduled for 7:30AM, but the surgical dept wants me there at 5AM? What the deuce.

I know I'm gonna be laying on a gurney for two hours before they even wheel me to the OR. :colbert:

They want to make sure that you haven't been smokin' crack two hours ahead of the procedure.

Kidding aside, they may want to observe your stability prior to anesthesia, remove problematic clothing, take your weapons away, get your vitals, review medications you're currently on, get an IV in, find out if there's someone to observe and transport you after the procedure, put the straight jacket on, do an anal probe, get your will in order, find out where you parked so they can take your car for a breakfast run while you're knocked out, etc. :)

I might actually prefer all of that to what will actually be happening, which is why I requested the general instead of local anesthesia. lol...Cystoscopy...

I'd rather do my online banking on an unsupported, obsolete device!

#Windows7forLyfe

I suspect that you don't understand where the security vulnerabilities are when doing online banking and what variables matter.

OS isn't one of them, unless trying to claim that the whole OS itself was already compromised, but then Win10 and 11 have more outstanding vulnerabilities, so ???

If you don't want to learn what the risks are and instead pretend that you can just run a certain OS, good luck with that.

I am not advocating that anyone do anything outside of their skill set, but I am advocating not to have a false sense of security from passively relying on which OS you run. The vast majority of security issues are user behavior based.

I don't think I was in two hours ahead, but it was quite a while.

Lots of checking and settling, next of kin listing (just in case) and what-nots.

But then they kept me overnight, just in case.

We had a short power outage today, at least I think it was short, I got woken up by the initial surge when it dropped. Was out for no more than an hour and came back. I got up, showered did all the usual stuff, sat down at the computer, only to realize that all my server stuff dropped, including my NAS. Dropped hard. Lost everything. Only thing running is the DNS and environmental control server as it's a standalone box.

I manage to recover the raw data and the raid arrays are mounted now, but having a hell of a time getting NFS working. The last time the NAS got rebooted was in like 2019.

I really don't get what happened, the batteries should have lasted longer than this.

Did anyone hear about the brazilian influencer and his first world problem? Went under general anesthesia to get a whole back tattoo done in a hospital. Died of a heart attack after going under. 45 years old.

General anesthesia for a tattoo? That's nuts. I guess we need more education to get people to understand that general is no joke.

Uh oh, someone isn't doing regular UPS tests!

I do regular tests but don't discharge it, I just watch the voltage to see where it stabilizes at to get a general idea then turn power back on, so it gets maybe like a 10 minute test or so. I check battery electrolyte and such every now and then too. We did get a 2+ hour outage a month ago and it was fine though.

I managed to recover the raid arrays and had a lot of trouble getting NFS going but got that going. VM server was also giving me issues, had to reset HA on each individual VM. Seems kinda pointless to have HA if you still need to manually intervene so starting to think of just disabling it.

Chinese batteries?

Suggestion:

Reduce essential data size to fit within a few terabytes.
Copy to external SSD of about 4 TB (do auto backup to an HDD over the network every night).
Connect external SSD to thin and light laptop that can survive at least 9 hours in sleep mode.

Regarding VMs, if it's something really critical that you want accessible at all times, maybe put it on Azure, AWS or some cheap VPS?

I've had generals twice recently. Both went fine. Not sure how often they don't, but I'd think it's a pretty small number and maybe other factors involved.

Almost all batteries are chinese, except for Rolls, which I may actually go with next. They're just old and due to be replaced. This particular model that I went with tend to die with a shorted cell so almost wonder if I have another one that did that, still need to run some more tests. I have not been replacing them as they die, with anticipation that the entire setup is going to be upgraded soon with hopefully higher quality batteries. Once the new battery string is in, I should be good for about 12 hours. That's enough time that if I'm in bed, or at work, I don't have to worry. Once I'm up or at home, then I can hookup a generator if the outage goes beyond that time.

I don't do cloud. I want all my stuff locally hosted and within my control. Also cheaper in the long run. I do have backups but it would be a pita if I had to rebuild the entire infrastructure. Which is another reason I don't do cloud, as managing backups or data recovery tends to be much harder without physical access. I do have a leased server at OVH for my web facing stuff but that's about it. I would actually host that at home if I could get a connection with a static IP and a ToS that allows to host services.

Either way, I'm just happy that I was able to recover from this...could have been so much worse. But it has lit a fire under my ass to finish the UPS upgrade. Price of wiring is just so crazy expensive now, so just been putting it off as this upgrade does involve running new wiring. We normally don't get outages in winter, and in summer I can fall back on solar. But this is the 2nd outage this winter now.

I've only been put under once, when I was a little kid, for dental work. It was the weirdest thing, I just remember doing small talk with the dentist while they were getting prepared to do the procedure, like typical stuff like how's school etc, and then he said everything was done and I could go. I was confused because I didn't think they even started, but reality is I got put under and woke up and just didn't even realize it.

I ordered two gallons of 50% vinegar and it looks like the USPS might have left that beast on a truck overnight. Once it gets above freezing, that guy's truck is going to smell amazing, kind of like my kitchen does after I opened the box.
Ohman… I use 75% vinegar diluted for weed killing purposes. Stuff is crazy strong smell!

Went to Planet Fitness to burn a few calories, the machine reported 136. And while working out I managed to munch on 120 calories worth (a dozen) of the free mini grape Tootie Rolls they give you. Since the machine's definitely not accurate, and if anything probably overestimates. I'm sure I burned less than I ate.

What the hell kind of gym fills a big ass bucket with candy and encourages you to take as much as you want?

It's crazy how easy it is to eat calories, vs the amount of work you have to put in to burn them. Grabbed a handful of M&Ms once on the way out the door, went for a 10km walk. When I got back I was curious how many calories I burned so I found an online calculator and inputted the data it asked for. I'm sure it's not super accurate but should at least give a ballpark. Basically burned half the calories walking 10km than I gained eating a handful of M&Ms. It's a miracle I'm not fat lol.

Started re-organising my audiobooks, in a strict "Second name, first name" format (currently they are entirely inconsistent and chaotic, some by author, some by book title, some first name first, some second name first). Only to realise I'm not sure how some of them should be listed (usually the question is "is that a middle-name or part of a two-part second name?" And I resent having to make the effort to look that up, when it really isn't important and I shouldn't have started down this road in the first place). Plus for some of them the authors are pretty obscure, it's the book title that's the memorable part, so having the top folder as the author ends up hiding them from me.
