What exactly is the difference between Techno/Trance/Rave/Club/House music?

I'd like to know as well... But, the only thing that i've been told is that there is no such thing as "rave" music. I don't know credible my friend was at the time though.
 
It is the number of overwhelming bass beats per minute. Techno has about 300, while Rave has a little over 500, so that the 12 year old kids can enjoy their Ecstacy more.
 
Best thing to do is go to mp3.com and stream some of the various genres of electronica. That'll give you a good feel for it.

It gets confusing after a while, and there's some overlap. Personally, I like melodic trance and psytrance the best so far...

Huh? A standard disco type song was 120-128 BPM's. Most current techno stuff is around 134-140.

It's a little difficult to explain. Trance/club/house... those are all forms of music that have been grouped into the genre of music called "techno." It really should be called electronic music. The sub-genres are just that. Kind of like the difference between classic rock, alternative rock, and metal. Trance is a very relaxing kind of music, probably the biggest genre over here in the states. Think melodic, slow, peaceful music. Most of the times trance has a female vocalist in it. Club/house are basically the same. That's what you hear in nightclubs mostly. If the beats per minute of trance is 120-140, the bpm of club is more than that, more like 140-160. House has a more solid and loud bass beat, is faster, has much less vocals, and is the kind of music you really want to dance to. There are a bunch of other sub-genres too: breaks, jungle/drum & bass, industrial, nu-skool, experimental, etc.
 
Well, alot of people use these terms interchangeably but here is my view:

Club/Rave - Not really a type of music per se but just indicitive of the type music played at a club/rave.

House - 130+ BPM, hard base line, usually has vocals. Older house had a more urban feel to it.
Techno - same as house but few vocals, usually a little more electronic in sound.

There are really no clear-cut lines between the two.

Let me strenuously object to the inclusion of industrial as a subgenre of techno. Industrial started as rhythmic playbacks or even live performances of industrial noise. Some of this material was literally recorded in old railroad yards, outside of airports, or whatever. Eventually, more traditional instrumentation provided the melody, while the noise inhabited the rhythm and other punctuations.

Eventually the material that made it to the mainstream was more like heavy metal that tried to imitate the noise and rhythms of factories, and it was often punctuated with samples from movies or other media sources.

I believe my earliest Industrial/Noise recording is BlackHouse's _Pro-Life_ which was release in 1984(?) I think. Ladd-Frith Records. It is pretty much unlistenable because it is consist almost entirely of noise and speed-varying screams and moans.
 
think of electronic music like classical music. both are compositions of several instruments often with varying climaxes.

i guess the general public refers to electronic music as "rave" music since it's primarily played at raves. it comes with a negative connotation especially since the media is brainwashing the world of how raves are absolutely wrong. don't judge unless you've been there. but nowadays, raves have gone mainstream with lil kids going for the wrong reason. you don't have that same atmosphere anymore.

anyways, thagrandcow pretty much has it.. it might be hard to distinguish between all the genres, but after listening to electronic music for some time, you might start to actually appreciate it if you don't already.

You are probably correct, in that sense. I only include industrial because I have heard electronic music that was composed of noises and industrial sounds. When I asked what kind of music it was I was told industrial. It still has the same steady bass beat and electronic/synthesized sounds as other forms of electronica.

I call that eurotrash (don't get me wrong, I actually like the track, thats just what my group calls that type of mucic). I'm not sure what genre that particular one falls into. I'd have to say some form of trance. Not traditional trance, but one of the sub-sub genres. I'd say a mix of trance and happy hardcore. Lots of electronic does not fall into one particular group. The best thing for you to do is to get on some filesharing service and do a general search for each of the main types. Start by looking for trance, house, jungle (or drum and bass), and happy hardcore. Lots of people name their music with the type of music that it is, so just a general search for "trance" will bring up a bunch of hits. Listen to 4-5 tracks from each type and you'll understand the basics of each genre. Since there are so many styles, many musicians blend 2, 3, or even 4 types. You'll understand as you hear examples.
 
trance = big, steaming pile of turd. the other kinds you mentioned (rave, club, etc.) are just turds of a different color. whatever you call it, it's still crap.

trance breaks down into a few catagories, mostly epic/uplifting aka pussy trance, progressive, acid, hard

epic/uplifting stuff generally includes dj's like paul oakenfold, dj tiesto, atb
progressive i will honestly say that phrase is thrown around so much i have no idea what it means anymore
acid is the good stuff (if you get my drift), stuff like christopher lawrence 😉
hard trance sometimes can be merged into NRG if you speed it up 4-5%, stuff like the blade song (which i'm sure you've all heard by now)

rave music is used to describe hard trance/nrg music, not really a genre by itself

NRG sucks ass hahahahhah it's the most annoying music on earth, ~180bpm, annoying as all hell

club music is generally used to define a certain type of house music, usually anthem house. this is the kinda stuff that usually gets played on the radio. think artists like amber, daft punk, anything radio'y that ends up being remixed and putting into a club is *gasp* club music

house music is the shiznit. there's a few different subbranches of house music, but i'm still learning about house so i won't go all into it and stuff. if you only use 1 word to define house, it's funky 😉 technically speaking, "one more time" is a house song, most house songs you will never hear on the radio; house seems to be more underground than the other genre's, and is generally listend to by a more mature crowd

there' sa couple other electronica genre's that most people don't even know about, ala jungle, hardcore, happy hardcore, but you won't need to worry about that 😉

uhhhhhhhh NO, house/techno shouldn't even be compared together!!~ the only thing you might be thinking of is hardhouse, which is crap anyway hahaha, and that's more like slowed down NRG


i think darude-sandstorm would be thrown under anthem trance, maybe hard trance OR progressive, because quite frankly i have no idea waht progressive means anymore~~

i just downloaded paul oakenfold's song "voyage into trance" and im listening to it right now. it sounds GOOD! now im downloading all the songs i can find on him over kazaa! thanks man! i like those techno songs that are happy, like alice deejay stuff. or "look at us now" u know? what are those called?
