techno is usually characterized by a more minimalistic araingement, 4/4 time beats, pumping baselines and usually a very electronic, hard/gritty sound although there are definatly some tracks that are smoother/more metalic sounding.

Trance is also characterized by 4/4 beats, but usually has a rolling baseline and synth parts based on chord progressions. most is relatively melodic and has repeating themes and most trance is characterized by "that" trance sound, wich for those in the know is a detuned saw lead.

Rave is not a genre, music played at raves usually falls into three catagories:

Breaks - breakbeat music with beats that are esentially sped up hiphop beats, the rest of the track will very, but usually includes low harmonic baselines and vocals.

Garage - based on a two step beat similar to that used by artist like craig david, usually involves lots of vocals and is my least favorite genre of electonica.

Progressive house - house music based on a 4/4, pumping baseline formula that starts very minimalistic but will then add more elements as the track progresses, usually vocals or synth parts.

Club is also not a genre, but rater music played in clubs, wich we all know varys quite alot.

House is one of those things thats very hard to describe. It also has a 4/4 beat, but the beats are usually more oraganic sounding. Actually one of houses big things is a more organic sound. House uses alot of real instruments just arainged and processed electornically. The rest depends really on the type of house, disco-house will sound reminiscent of disco, funky-house will sound, well... funky. theres all sorts of others such as deep-house, tribal-house, breakbeat-house, progressive-house ect ect that all have a distinct sound.

hope that helped some....

oh and for those who have nothing better to do than come into a thread specifically about a genre you dont like and spout off your unwanted opinion, why dont you tell us all what sorts of music you like? that way i too can say it sounds like crap based on solely my personal and limited experience. wankers.

Neuro...Christopher Lawrence is "acid trance"? Since when? And Darude...thats what I call fluffy video game music.
Also how many times do you idiots need to chime in about how this type of music is crap. I dont think the original poster wants your lame comments and views on the genre. He wants to know the difference in the terminology. Go nef elsewhere.

since he said so on us. states of trance :)

i think he created his own genre? lol i can scan the booklet and show you where it says so too ;)

longcoolmother-

actually i don't hahhaha; hey i'll admit it, i really do need to be more open to different kinds of music, but right now i just listen to anything with a beat

and i don't know the history of the music i listen to either

so i have no idea what you are referring to ;)

oh yeah

<< It is the number of overwhelming bass beats per minute. Techno has about 300, while Rave has a little over 500, so that the 12 year old kids can enjoy their Ecstacy more. >>

i can enjoy my ecstacy just fine while listening to frank sinatra or larry king thank you very much ;)

Neuro, I wish they'd stop creating their own subsubgenres and trying to confuse us even more. BTW...Christopher Lawrence may call his style "acid trance" now but we all know he's just another fruity anthem trance DJ thats trying to cross over to a different genre since basic fluffy trance is not the chic thing anymore. Nothing against Christopher Lawrence, because he is the sh!t... always tears it up at the parties. Even Oakenfold is changin his style...guess its just the sign of the times. All the clubs around here play progressive house/trance or drum and bass. Btw, I still like the uplifting melodic anthem trance...aka pussytrance by you :) However I also like many other genres. I'm really into Seb Fontaine right now...He's gonna be makin an appearance near me soon, can't wait.

where do you live anyway?

and i can't believe you called cl anthem trance!!~ he doesn't play any of the mainstream stuff; heck i can't even find another dj that spins the same style of trance!~ and yes, cl is the shiznit :)

i never really got to liking seb fontaine, iono why

pussy trance wise, i used to be real big into it; one of the highlights of my party-circuit phase was listening to dj tiesto live; mmmmmmm that was not to be missed ;)

but yeah, i stopped listening to most trance dj's just cause i got so bored with it; i listen almost exclusively to cl now, with some other stuff thrown in just for kicks

i spend more time listening to houes music now, cuz house is a feelin' =)

I live near DC...Yes I caught DJ Tiesto my idol live...but he was definitly not up to form that night for some reason, i dont think he was into it at all cuz the venue was so sh!tty.... as for CL spinning anthem/cheese or whatever u call it now trance... isnt that what he spun long time ago. Alot of the trance dj's now a days are trying to be more edgier and what not. CL was the highlight of my night last year at my first outdoor rave... Tommorow night I'm going to be out listening to Dj Marky, MC Skibadee, and DJ Craze...DJ DAN will be there too but im not a big fan of his.

24 in May... DC has the club/party that is rated #1 by URB magazine... BUZZ @Nations :) I think I must go at least twice a month. You guys in cali are mainly into progressive trance/house over there right? I hear there isn't much of a drum and bass scene. At least thats what my friends in LA say. A bunch of my friends actually flew over there a few months ago to catch DJ Tiesto...forgot the venue name...but it was pretty crucial I heard.

hm....so cali isn't that big into jungle no, we get a few but not much, mainly house and trance

norcal is more jungle stuff, depends if you want mainstream stuff or ug stuff

yeah, nation, hehehehe that was what i was thinking of

you were probably thinking of pure sounds @ the mayan

it's liek a 1200 person venue, but they bring out the best dj's from england, it's insane

i see you're into jungle now haha; i'm over that shiz, we get a few good jungle names everytime a massive comes around, but that's about it; however, i am starting to listen to alot of breaks and stuff, ala simply jeff, adam freeland, and artful dodger

meh, whatever, mainstream so cali scene is all but dead, only scene that's still alive and kickin down here is ug house scene ;)

however, when i'm 21, things are gonna be PHUN; with twilo gone, we have 2 of the best clubs in the US down here, spundae and giant :)

My friend got me into 'techno' back in like 1994-95. I've always liked it but never knew all the different types and their names. I just listen to what I like and i don't care what its called.
I especially like the ones with a good beat and a good melody, as just a fast beat tends to give me a headache over anything else.

Since your the experts here guys, i'm just wondering what THIS might be considered? This is the type that I like and i'm just wondering what category it fits into.

Hey, nice fast server to grab that song from!

Although, it's a tad slower and a bit repetitive for my tastes, I guess that's an okay song. A bit boring, though. Almost sound like the background to a video game. ;)

you know i have no idea lol; it sounds like something BT or fatboy slim would throw out; anybody got any ideas? lol it's not any sort of trance (well, maybe ambient, but ambient is slower than that....), not any sort of house or breakbeat eitehr

trance is for newbie electronica listeners...

house and jungle are for the more mature listener. Although I did hear some kick ass acid trance at the last rave I went to.

Trance is the ambient, quick beat, meloncholly beat

House consists of remixes of popular songs with a classic beat, some times alittle jazzy.. more real sounding

Jungle consists of remixes with a drum/snare beat. very differently paces compared to Trance and house.

Dunno, I guess so but I can see where your coming from.. trance has the melodies coupled with the nice straight beats which attracts newbies. However, I've been listening to Electronic Dance Music since I was in 7th grade, im 24 now...and I still love Trance. Oh and Neuro...I like a little bit of everything (except gabber and happy hardcore), I got into Drum and Bass maybe 3 years ago. Some of my friends turned into hardcore jungalists while I just stay in between and enjoy it all. Whats your favorite DJ's? Some of mine are Andy C, Ed Rush, Donald Glaude, Seb Fontaine, DJ TIESTO!!!!!, Kimball Collins, PVD, Tall Paul, AK1200, etc.... just to give u a taste of what I like. I've been fortunate to see them all live except for Seb Fontaine and I can list another couple hundred more Ive heard live. Thank god for a good local scene.

p.s. im playing my music not too loud at all my downstairs neighbor is blasting his ghetto hip-hop shiet, like turning the bass all the way to the max...i have my bass turned ALL THE WAY down always... :|

OH yeah...Neuro...the party my friends flew to Cali for was @ GIANT...they said the venue was huge and packed...well worth it for Tiesto. Then they went to some all asian "rave" club and said they had a buzz kill and a half cuz they saw korean ahjushi's and ahjuma's (old moms and dads) rolling their asses off. Guess its wack like that in Cali haha.

oh yeah, tiesto @giant

they had that one at the hollywood athletic club i think

they drained the olympic size pool and party down there hhahaahha

and i know exactly what club you're talking about; that place is a little crackhouse; i admit though, people aside, i like the venue; it's clean, nice restrooms, cheap water; crappy outdoor area though, and it is most def a crackhouse

hm...right now i listen to about 60/30/10 house/trance/other; i listen to alot of downtempo for fun, derrick carter, dj sneak, a little bit of dj dan's older stuff, roger sanchez, eric morillo, trance wise i tend to listen to a lot of paul van dyk, christopher lawrence owns me, hm, not very picky on trance that much anymore, i just stopped listening to the epic/uplifting stuff for the most part, a little tiesto here and there but that's it; also love to hear breaks every once in a while, adam freeland, simply jeff, a buncha smaller cats.

we get ed rush/optical and glaude down here ALOT
