Moral panic was a term coined by Goode and Ben-Yehuda back in '94. It means:

<< "A moral panic is characterised by the feeling, held by a substantial number of the members of a given society, that evil-doers pose a threat to the society and to the moral order as a consequence of their behaviour and, therefore, "something should be done" about them and their behaviour." (p. 31). >>

A very good example is satanic rituals and baby killings. People in the late 80s and early 90s thought that satanic baby killings were occuring all across the US. Geraldo had dozens of shows about this. It was on Hard Copy and tabloid news. People were coming out saying that they know somebody or suspect somebody of this. But not a single incident was ever reported or discovered. Not a single one.

Another is Florida and their tourist industry. Back in the mid 90s, there was a few car jackings and deaths of tourists by criminals. This resulted in the rest of the world, especially the Europeans who travelled to Florida, to go in a state of moral panic that Florida is especially crime ridden, and that criminals specifically target tourists. Hell, even today, if you book a vacation to Florida, they give you pamphlets of information on how to look less like a tourist so you're not specifically targetted. But the truth is, is that given the number of tourists that do visit Florida, the crime rate against tourists and normal citizens are the same.

BTW, a moral panic is an exaggeration of the problem or an exaggeration of the response... or both.

A moral action is an appropriate reaction to the problem.

I enjoy bebop jazz but BJZ is not a very flattering nick. Since I also enjoy cool jazz (west coast style), I picked CJZ. Don't know why I didn't go with cjazz.

Well.. I tried to register Omega Algorithm... but something freaked out, and I couldn't register it again. So I picked TheOmegaCode... Why, because I play alot of games. I got the name from a little estabolishment known as Omega Tobacco. I started thinking that means its the last cigarette you'll be smoking... and so I stuck algorithm on the end of it, and made a thing out of it.

"Electrode120" was my screen name back when I used AOL in 1996. When I got a real ISP a few months later, I found IRC to be a nice alternative to AOL's chat rooms, one of the few things I liked about it. I needed a name, so I used "Electrode."

I've tried to change it several times, especially after 1998 when people started thinking I was an 8-year-old pokemon lover (which I didn't understand until I found a GBC rom of the game and played through it) but I never liked anything but "Electrode".

I've always used it, and I will always use it. It's not a really creative or unique name, but I've grown attached to it. :)

My alias is Dullard. I've visited online games and forums for many years. Far too often pathetic losers are online and try to make up for their lowly skills/knowledge with magestic sounding names. Here are some of the first aliases I ever saw: Einstein, TheGreat, Smartest, Hercules, etc... Look around, even in this very thread, you will see many other examples people hiding behind overly inflated, egotistical aliases.

Thus I choose to let my words/gaming skills speak for themselves. I thought about stupid, simpleton, moron, oaf, and a few others. Dullard just seemed to stick, and I've yet to see another person use my nick.

Edit: I didn't mean to insult anybody that happens to do what I described. It just 'seems' like you are pathetic, after I get to know you I might change my mind.

I'm a guy, but still:

<< Nemesis was the goddess of indignation and retribution for evil deeds or undeserved good fortune. She was a personification of the resentment aroused in men, -and in the gods-, by other men who commited crimes with apparent impunity, or who had inordinate good fortune. Her name means 'she who distributes or deals out'.

Nemesis directed human affairs in such a way as to maintain equilibrium. Happiness and unhappiness were measured out by her, care being taken that happiness was not too frequent or too excessive. If this happened, Nemesis could bring about losses and suffering. As one who checked extravagant favours by Tykhe (Fortune), Nemesis was regarded as an avenging or punishing divinity.
>>

I learned that name through "Nemesis the Warlock"-comic, and in kinda stuck. I added "77" (the year I was born in), because plain "Nemesis" was already taken.

Back in old nintendo rpgs and also in most arcade games, when you put in your name you only have 3 spots. For some reason I always chose "ACE". When I came online and needed to pick a nickname for myself I naturally chose ace. Later I realized ace wasn't very freaking original so I needed to change it. I was part of an online gaming group called Shadow Knights, so it was already sk_ace. I removed the _ and wallah skace.

so uhm, skace = shadow knight ace. I prefer skace to mean nothing now, since shadow knight ace is pretty lame.
