What does the confederate flag mean in modern times?

I'm from the South (SC; we started the whole Civil War thing 🙂). Anyways, I don't personally fly the flag, but I know many people who do and it's not a racist thing. It's simply pride in who we are: Rednecks, hicks whatever. I don't find those terms offensive. My Dad and brother both drive 4x4 pickups. I used to drive a Camaro (you know the rep they have). I go mudfishing almost every weekend in the summer (mudfishing is like bass fishing except that you don't really want to eat a mudfish since they're nasty as heck. we just weight them in and then throw them back). I've got 2 shotguns and a rifle at home. It's just our identity and we're proud of it (and by the way the black to white ratio in my hometown of Huger is probaly on the order of 30(black) to 1(white) and we've never had a racial oriented problem that I know of. I worked at the only gas station in town during all of my high school years and became friends with many, many of the black residents). But many "yanks" see that and think that we're dumb or racist because our culture down south is different, which is simply untrue and very closed minded (just as I said before, I'm from about as far back in the woods as you get, pretty much in the middle of Francis Marion National Forest if you know where that is. I grew up backwoods, I talk with southern accent, and I'm on the virge of getting my B.S. in Computer Science.)
 
One other thing. A lot of people are bigots against people with a Southern accent. They automatically want to call you a redneck or ask if you participated in any lynchings lately. WTF? I mean c'mon. Most Southern people are hardworking and accepting people. I have had black friends all my life. It is funny because I really didn't consider them black. I don't look at someone and go oh they are white or they are black. If they are my friend, then they are my friend.

 
this thread has become entirly ridiculous, all these bigots saying they fly the confedreate flag because of they want to celebrate the histroy of the south have to to show one piece of southern histroy they are proud of and the connection it has to the confedrate flag, while the confedrate flag to most educated people shows a time where the south openly refused to stop practicing slavery under the guise of states rights.


the confedrate flag stands for a time in our history where the south promoted slavery to meet their own selfish goals.


Now i have not once in any of my posts implied you dont have the right to fly your flag, by all means do what you want this is a free country but if you ask what i can assume of a person who flys one, i will assume that they are uneducated redneck rascist trash.

The problem isn't that you assume Confederate flag flyers are "rascist[sic] trash". The problem is that you hold that bigoted thought even when you find out the truth of the matter.

No what is pathetic is that neither one of you have an argument to refute. Both of you are the true bigots here by telling us that anyone that flys the confederate flag is a redneck or a racist. I have tons of points in my last points. Ameesh refused to refute them, as do you. By why should he? I mean after all he is superior to me in education and intelligence because he is asian. Read his post about that. If you actually have an argument then post it. If not quit trolling the people who actually do. Is that a hard concept? Debate=discuss points and opinions. Obviously you didn't get it. He's claiming that Confederate flag flyers ought to be thought of as ignorant and uneducated. And yet it should be obvious to anyone reading this thread that the defenders of the flag are articulate and educated. I "attacked" his spelling in order to highlight the closed mindedness of his assumptions. He's assuming that he is better educated/less ignorant than flag defenders. I was showing that the evidence was not in his favor.

I would not attack someone's spelling if it didn't somehow attack their arguement.

That is so stupid. Obviously, you have never lived in a Southern state. It does not mean racist here. Some hate groups have used the image to promote their propaganda, but that also holds true for the American Flag (skinheads) and the Christian cross (KKK). The southern people realize what a travesty slavery was. It was an unfortunate part of our history but a way of life back then. Most of our county's founding fathers, including Washington and Jefferson owned slaves. The North also used the slavery issue for selfish reasons..The Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in Confederate States (not the slaves in the Union) after it seemed like the Union might lose the war in order to gain support from blacks. Not untill after the Civil War, the 13th Amendment of 1865 officially abolished slavery in all remaining states

Again lets review the biggest travisty in high school history class. The falsehood that are taught to our young can only help to breed this indifference to our young. I will out this in bold and perhaps (although I highly doubt it) you may get the point.

After it was illegal to import slaves the northern states begain abolishing slavery because IT WAS NO LONGER FINACIALLY FEESIBLE! It was CHEAPER to hire people than to provide them with shelter and food in an industrialized economy You also had to support any offspring and it took much longer for those children to reach an age where they could be productive in the work place.

When slavery was ended in the north very few slaves were accually freed (they had been free for sometime).

Yet what you learn in school is that the north was NICE and the south was MEAN.

Many southern leaders Knew that slavery would end soon because it wasn't cheap as you say and again it was illegal to IMPORT slaves. The abolishment of slavery was PUNISHMENT to the south nothing more. LINCOLN even said he would not free the slaves.

SO open your eyes and relize the facts.

FLYING A CONFEDERATE FLAG IS NOT RACIST

If you are looking to be offended then you will more than likely find it. Also you could look at the horrible acts that have been commited by any number of groups OR symbols that are used by hate groups and pretty soon the wirld is pretty bland.

OR perhaps you are just upset that you aren't as proud of your heritage. This country was built on the plantations of the south YET the south gets very little credit.

they flew it out of a deep sense of victimhood (as a poor, suffering white person), while taking pleasure in knowing that it provoked & frightened minorities.

You would make those asumptions. I would not. However curiosity would get the better of me and I would ask why you were flying that flag or whatever. Then I would remember it's a free country, nobody is really being hurt by it and I would move along. What I have found after living the last 14 years in Ga and now Tn is that most people have confederate flags for one of two reasons 1. Someone told them they shouldn't and 2. They're Southerners. When asked to explain what that means to be a Southerner most can't say anymore than someone who is from the South. I have met bigots, hicks and rednecks everywhere I have been stationed (GA, TN, VA, WA, CT). There is not a disproportinate number of them anywhere. To say any different based on geo location or a sticker on a car is just pure unadulterated ignorance.

what spamela wrote is dead on. it is not comparable to a turban. Now if you go around wearing a nazi armband .. thats entirely different. There a difference between pride and having to wave a symbol around. A symbol like a flag is a general message to all that see it like it or not. no one(points to self) said you weren't allowed to. If you bothered to actually read the thread you'd notice that.... i'm all for the aclu and the freedom of speech, i dont' care if its hate speech or not. Whether i'll accept it as good.. thats another question all together.

I would suggest a trip down to Oxford, MS one Saturday this Fall.

The Ol' Miss Rebels have some of the best pre-game parties around, and you will literally see a sea of Rebel flags proudly waving.

Southernors have been victimized, be we sure aren't victims.

As a side note, do you realize that the Confederate Gov't NEVER surrendered? We were beaten, but did not give up.
