I'm mostly a 20%er unless you?re a total moron, or you just don?t give a sh1t then I tip you appropriately. I do understand that they don?t get paid allot for what they do, and they work very hard. You also have to take under consideration that the person who is waiting on your table also may be overwhelmed by side work because some one didn?t show up, or a douche bag manager. If they were sh1tty I usually ask, wtf happened why are you so terrible? I'm not the type of person who sits around while being mistreated I speak up. Sometimes I get an answer I feel is honest and it may "rescue" their tip.

But in all honesty, you got to really screw up for me to not give decent tip. As far as asking for a tip that?s tacky, but it doesn?t matter if they ask, they already did a good job or sucked; they would probably get a nasty look and that?s it. No effect on there tip. Places that "include a tip" in the bill are usualy doing that because the servers tend to get shafted.

Those that do this for large parties are often protecting the good tippers from the one guy at the table that ordered all the most expensive stuff and now is trying to say, think a buck is ok for the tip?

Also beware the really cheap that as you are all leaving says I forgot something at the table and proceeds to pull part of the tip (usually more than they paid) back.

Two guys I know were like that. Funny thing is both are still supported by their family (they are in their 30's now). One was totally banished from our group for constantly being an idiot....the other was just cheap so we accept him, but tell him what he's looking at at the end of the night....he still tries to pull the 'I only drank water', despite us backing out the expensive drinks from the tab. He is the guy that orders the most expensive of each category even if it sucks. He also buys clothes (again on parental Credit) wears them once and returns them with tags. When he lived in West Palm Beach...most of the bigger stores denied his returns after a while, now he is in NYC and constantly dealing with streetside / boutique type shops.

Just a story for those that think this kind of life is ok.

The few times I have had a manatory tip for less than 8 people (which many restaurants require) -- I've had terrible service. I ask them to re-print the receipt and tip how I seem fit.

I used to work those types of jobs so I got a softspot for those people.

Once or twice I've been somewhere that's added the tip automatically, and if the service is good enough to warrant it I sometimes let it slide, or simply mention that I'd normally be tipping them, but since they already added it they get nothing extra. Once or twice the service has been substandard, by a LOT, and I flat out refused to pay the extra that they added on, before the meal started. They said that it wasn't an option, I told them that if they didn't feel like earning their wage then they need an easier job, to go get my food, and if they do it well they won't have any problems.

I've yet to be refused service for arguing it.

Automatically added gratuity is NOT mandatory unless there is a large group and it is noted in the menu that groups of larger than X get XX% gratuity added. Even so If your service is terrible you may speak with the manager. I agree with you in every way. I will NOT tip more if it is added for no reason (aka out with my GF on a date). But I tip LESS if it is added and there is CRAP service. I've gotten into arguments with waitors before and said pretty much the same thing.

Gratuity is not just recieved, it is earned, and I could get service like that at Mc.Donalds.

I'll tip a pizza driver about 2 bucks unless i'm getting several pizza's. Then i'll tip more

15% is a standard of tipping, it is NOT the required tip

with the wage that the worker is making however i do feel that a tip is NEARLY required

if they did a crappy job 10%
if they did a really crappy job 5%
if they did a really really crappy job (drop your food on the table and you never see them again) 2%

however if a person does an outstanding job i'll go as high as 30%
if i know the waiter/waitress and my bill is small i'll go even higher.. left a $5 tip on a $7 bill once because i knew the person AND they did an incredible job

i don't know about that...my parents were tipping $5 in mid 90's.

I have pizza places on my drive home now and don't get delivery.

However, at the same time as a chinese delivery guy I averaged $2 a delivery at the same time....the Dominoes guys next door only got change on average.

heh i said the same thing and i have been called a Thief by platiumgold, cheapskate and a bunch of other stuff.

i tip 2 bukcs for (+1 for every pizza after, only order mroe then this when i have parties) a pizza UNLESS a delivery charge. IF there is one i don't tip. I also tell the delivery driver and whoever takes the order.

a TIP is earned. But it has gotten to the point where people expect it. Wich is partialy why customer service sucks so bad.

I absolutely HATE it when a restaurant demands a tip, especially if it had poor service.

I put anywhere from 10-20% tip depending on service, wait time, etc etc.

When they ask for tip, I just say sorry, can you print out a new receipt? Then I put a big zero for tip.

What do you guys do.

What kind of resturaunts do you dine at that asks for a tip?

Oh yea, you sound cheap.
Just tip that damn waiter/waitress.

damn they tack on $1 for your cheap order and you stiff the guy bringing your pizza...way to go! You really tell the guy on the phone you are not going to tip? you must have had tasty pizzas.

don't ever complain how punished you have been in life again, you earned it

or probably based on the other guys saying they had to wait for a table [do you know who I am?]

when I was a server, 10+ years ago I had a restaurant that stood behind me. Some guy was 20mins away, promised a good tip and weekly orders, it took us 30 mins to get him his order...mostly due to him bragging, I get there and the place is a country ghetto.

"I am not that far, this service sucks....ok I will take your food back"

idiot called on me saying he wasn't ordering again demanding me fired because he has important guests (it was like $20 order)....manager said ok, don't order again...

Well this has turned into one large bash Nik thread.

All of this could be avoided if people would actually read through it. Yes Nik has said several times that if he gets great service he tips and tips between 50-100%. He also said that if the service was just average that he does not feel compelled to tip. Which everyone is turning around and calling him names and saying that he is cheap. Look at where he lives though. You are all assuming that in his state the servers are getting paid 2-3 dollars an hour, as is the situation in most other states. However, in Oregon the servers are paid Oregon's minimum wage of $7. Most of us tip servers for doing an average job, because we know they are getting paid only $2-3/hour. I don't think if I lived in a state where servers got paid $2 dollars over the national minimum wage, that I would feel as compelled to tip for just adequate service.

All that means is that you're as cheap as he is. Do you normally research state law when you're on vacation, prior to deciding how much to tip? Lexis/Nexis, here I come!

Actually no I am not cheap. If you had read my previous comments you would know my stance on tipping. Also if you had read the entire thread you would have seen that 2 different people stated that waiters/waitresses in Oregon get paid the same $7 minimum wage as everyone else in that state. Reading comprehension is my friend, it can be yours too.

I wouldn't really bother anymore, AutumnRayne. They've shown that they're not interested in an actual conversation. They're only interested in immature replies and flame wars.

ive tipped over 100% several times but that was because the service, food, and atmosphere was awesome to say the least. Good service i top between 15 and 30%, decent 10-15. But if service sucks (by service i mean food atmosphere and the actual service) i tip nothing. I also would not pay a tip that was just tacked onto the bill with out my prior knowledge. But if the added tip amount was 15% and i knew this was going to happen and i still got good service then i could care less, infact i might (and have) tipped more than the suggested amount. Either way if you know they are going to put it on then pay it regardless, if they just pop it on then i think thats gay and would refuse. Of course im not cheap or broke so spending the money means less to me than others im sure.

You two should go on a date, no arguement over the tip, you'll both agree not to leave one.

Ok I?m not trying to put gas on you guys flame, but from what I hear (x-girlfriend at hooters ((Non-Racist)), keep in mind I?m half Cuban and half Italian, minorities don?t feel its very important to tip. She didn?t say ALL but the majority (High 80%) tend to give really, really crappy tips no matter what, like less than or about 10%. Like they just don?t realize the server makes money off of tips.

I'ma do my part in trying to change that pattern.
