I am wearing my Omega Railmaster right now - it's a great watch. I also have a white Seamaster GMT. I have been very pleased with both of my Omegas.
Yeah, except the President is real gold and has a real movement. You can resell a President for most of what you bought it for ...
A Seiko is not even good as a skipping rock when it fails after a year or two and holds no value at all.

Does an expensive watch really keep time that much better? My dad has a Seiko...he was talking with a friend about how they both lose time and have to keep changing them. Granted, they're not $5000 watches, but they're not 30 bucks, either. I don't have to mess with mine..

Nope. In fact, most don't keep time as accurately as a US$5.00 plastic POS.
A Certified Chronometer (mechanical watch) can be off by seconds per week. Pretty much any quartz watch is orders of magnitude more accurate than that.
The things that make the expensive watches expensive are the materials, the craftsmanship (even for as "inaccurate" as they are, it's still better than parts-per-million accuracy), and that they are an investment that many consider on par with artwork.
Nothing looks dumber than some clown dressed in thousands of dollars in suits, shoes, ties & such wearing a $20.00 plastic watch.
I don't know much about watches, but for $5k I would think you could get something better than an Omega ... look at IWC or another comparable brand.

Sure all these look nice but, with the advent of cell phones, watches are redundant. If one is trying to call attention to himself, try a gold or diamond necklace.
I've never worn a watch... a couple pocket watches, sure, but wearing anything around my wrist drives me up the wall. kinda weird since back in my drag phase I used to wrap bracelets and chains halfway up my arm.

I would look into Breitling. I love aviator style wathces. I like Omega but not that one. I hate Tag watches with a passion. My father in law is an old school watch repair guy. I went into his shop one time and he was working on someones 8k Tag and he pointed out the PLASTIC gears in the watch. PLASTIC! And it was NOT a knock-off either. Never buy Tag.

OP. I love Omegas. The Hour Vision watch you linked is their top of the line with a new movement. It is not a common watch by any means and is definitely well regarded among the watch community.
That being said, you can probably purchase it for much less than the $5500 you stated. PM me if you want info on a US authorized dealer who will pretty much guarantee 30% off MSRP.

I HIGHLY doubt the actual gears were plastic. If your FIL is old-school, he might not be familiar with some of the new components being used in movements. Many of them do indeed look and feel like plastic, but they're just a light alloy that's coated with teflon.

Still, that's generally not the point. I have a ~US$5k+ watch (Blancpain 2100 Chrono/Flyback) that is fairly ordinary looking. Certainly, there are a number of "jewelery" watches that are pretty flashy, but there are many more that are unusual design, operation, materials, etc.
