While I've never had first hand experience listening to Bose compared to others, I'm sure you guys are 100% correct in "bose=trash". Although, my ears probably couldn't tell the difference. That kind of annoys me. For example, the difference in sound quality of a 56kbps mp3 and a 192kbps mp3 is hardly noticeable at all for me for some reason.

Just wondering how computer speakers compare to bose, and other speakers that you guys consider good. I have Labtech's 4.1 speaker system and I think it sounds good I guess. How would it compare to bose? or what about the other ones? Is there some kind of chart that starts w/ the very worst speakers like a cheap 1.99 radio speaker, and moves up to the very best. That would be nice to see, just to see how far up on the scale different speakers I have are.

Your ears aren't the problem, your sound system is. If you want a good PC system get the Boston Acoustics BA4800. Great sound for the price. If you're willing to spend more, try the Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 or 5.1

Bose is high-end equipment.......

If you do your stereo shopping at Sams and Best Buy.

Goto your local High-end stereo store and try to find a Bose system. You can
't because they suck.

Personally, I look at true mid to high end stuff like MB Quart, Paradigm and Klipsch for speakers Denon, Pioneer Elite, and Marantz for receivers/amps. I went for the Klipsch - Denon combo because I don't listen to classical music and opra, and the power handling of the Klipsch combined with the audio re-production of the Denon is remarkable. I'd love to spend $75,000 on speakers, but I will never think twice about my purchase.

My home theater rocks:

Denon Dolby Dig. rec.
Klipsch KSB3.1 fronts
Klipsch C1 center
Klipsch SS1 surround
Klipsch 15" Sub (800 watt amp.)
and the newest addition:
Mitsubishi 65" HDTV

I only recently learnt about real audio equipment and real audio stores.

I started out at a fairly large local electronics shop and listened to their sub $400CAD bookshelf speakers and found only one set I felt I'd be comfortable owning. Did some more shopping and found a shop that carried paradigms and found some incredible sounding speakers for $200CAD.

Canada has some awesome speaker manufacturers and prices that make some americans weep about yet people here still go and buy foreign speakers that cost 20-40% more to match the quality of some of our canadian speakers.

sad. but I'd love to see what a set of bose could do against the paradigm reference 40s I heard tonight in a similar price range. The paradigms dropped my jaw powered by a relatively small denon 1602.

I won't even try to defend BOSE for home use - I've never heard a system, and as I was flipping thru the Crutchfield catalog I couldn't believe their prices :Q My orthodonist has a wave radio, it looks cool and sounds good. Is it worth $100? No, probably not, but it does the job.

BOSE car audio on the other hand is very good, espically like another poster said, compared to other premium car audio systems. I have a car that came with the non-upgraded speakers, and I spent $300 on a Pansonic deck, $150 on speakers and their installation, and $100 to get a used base tube installed (the tube was probably worth $100, got it from a friend). Okay, so that's $650 worth of upgrades. It doesn't even come CLOSE to my friend's Cadallic Escalade and his premium BOSE system. I have no idea what the upgrade charge was to get the BOSE speakers (or if its standard?) but his is much better than mine.

People who think they can tell the difference in sound quality in thier home stereo based on changing from a $20 speaker wire to a $50 speaker wire are a lot like the people who think they can tell the difference between 90 fps and 150 fps in quake3. It's a load of BS.

Huma - you're right, Canada has some pretty great speaker manufacturers. Paradigm, PSB, Energy. Can't wait for the day when i can afford some Paradigm Reference towers.

notfred - i'm not sure about $20 vs $50, but there is a difference between $20 Radio Shack and $75 BetterCables.Com cables. It just takes a good sound system to hear it.

I think they sound pretty decent, and i'll "admit" they have some products that out-do the others on the market, but as you said, it's WAY overpriced it's laughable, in fact i'll laugh right now, haha. with that over with, good luck buying your next system! heh

okay, before i really get it, i just want to make it clear that i'll never buy a BOSE system..heh, and that i ment decent sounding for what they are(trash), i have a set of stereo computer speakers on sale for i think $5 a while back, using what looks to me a 2" driver.....sounds like a hollow tin can....bose tries the same thing.....i'm not quire sure if they were expecting alot better results or what.......i wish that i could walk down to the local land-fill, start slapping my name on things and have people rush to me to pay me large sums of money for it.....

Had a pair of Bose 301 series III, I bought used. Worst pair of speakers I ever owned. My altec lansing computer speakers sound better.

The AR302's I now own are perhaps the best investment I ever made. They are so sonically precise.. just phenomenal. And th JBL SVA 1800's I traded for the AR 302's were a phenomonal speaker too -- lots of dispersion thanks to the horn tweeter.

It still amazes me how much people have it entrenched in their mind that "Bose = HIFI, best sound you can get" Bose's marketing is probably one of the best promotion machines around. Hell, I used to think Bose was the best. It was always so expensive compared to the rest of the crap at Best Buy/CC/<insert your favorite mass-market consumer electronic store here> "It must be good"

Just today I tried again to convince my co-worker that he need not waste $1200 on a crappy Bose "home theater" system. He kept saying "I've always wanted Bose" I told him to PLEASE listen to other systems before he buys the Bose. It's too bad Bose setups never let you compare them with higher fidelity units.

Their sub is two 5.5 inch drivers! What a freaking joke! Unfortunately, when it comes to speakers, physics rule. Therefore, bigger is usually better. My $150 Sony SA-WM40 12" sub will blow away that Bose unit.

Don't get me wrong...Bose sounds "alright"....if only the didn't charge so damn much for the speakers. Heck, my Inifiniti I30 has a Bose system in there and I am quite happy with it.

But for my hometheater, I will take my PSB bookshelves and Sony sub any day!

I pity and poor soul who purchases BOSE "speakers." I can't believe people are standing up for them...WHY?!?! Are you trying to someone make it seem like you made a smart purchase when you blew all that money on speaker that are outmatched by a $50 pair of Altec Lansing computer speakers?
Bose's marketing slogan:
"No Highend, and no Lowend! Hell, we don't even have Midrange!"

BOSE is for the richer idiots of the world. People who buy this garbage have no respect from me. A simple trip to any audio store would reveal speakers sounding infinitely better at a lower price. And if you want to stick with your tiny-ass speakers, many other manufacturers also make portable speakers that blow Bose's cubes-o-trash out of the water.

anybody tried that super expensive Bose wave radio? Their "Can your radio do this?" is quite memorable.

Well the only reason I am so anti-bose is because my family was wounded once. Back when none of us knew anything, we got some Bose speakers. We were excited (first "Real" stereo) but when we set them up we thought we did it wrong...cause it sounded like trash and my little boombox put out better sound levels (both high, low, and mid for god's sake!). Turns out they were setup right, they just sucked. So we took them back and got some nice Sound Dynamics speakers that sounded awesome. That was years ago and they're still in the living room. I have moved on to Paradigm though :D

Well, let me first say that I also agree that Bose is overpriced and generally sounds bad.
That said, when I went looking for a $300 range set of speakers to take to college with me, I ended up buying the Bose AM-3. I listened to tons of different manufacturers, and even spent some time listening to other price ranges. I was extremely disappointed in Bose's lineup. I had figured the hype was there for a reason. Obviously that isn't so. Most of their setups sounded muddy, with too much mid-range, and I could easily localize the bass module. But the AM-3 (their cheapest satillete setup) sounded much different. The bass module wasn't pushing frequencies high enough to be localized, and the whole system sounded much warmer and clearer than the rest of the Bose lineup. In short, it didn't sound like a Bose. I listened to tons of systems that day, and the only system that could accurately reproduce some of my music was the Bose AM-3 (short of the over $1000 systems by other companies). No other Bose system (no matter how expensive) came close. So I walked away with my views of Bose forever changed. But I also walked away an owner of an AM-3 system.
