back in the days, roman butcheries would throw away the cow's tail, because it was considered offal, "stuff you don't eat". Oxtail is amazing, just as good as the best cut of steak, but nobody would buy it, so they would throw it out, or sell offal really cheap, pennies. So poor people, people who could barely afford clothing, would buy tripe, intestines, tail, ears, bones all the stuff that otherwise would go in the garbage (or would even go dumpster-diving, that's not something that hipsters invented), and some of the dishes they came up with are amazing.

Sure, oxtail takes 4 hours to stew, but when it's ready, ermagherd.

LOBSTER was previously considered poor people's food. Servants would often stipulate in their contracts "that they not be fed lobster more than 3 times per week" because it was so cheap, that's what you would feed your servants if you owned a mansion.

I had Jamaican style ox tail for thanksgiving last year. My daughter's boyfriend made it. Not something I'd have ever gotten on my own accord, but it was damned good. Would definitely eat again.
 
Besides Kimchi, I think that Peanut Butter is also one of the greatest foods invented. It's cheap, very filling, and tastes really good.
 
If done right, I really think there should be no need to add anything to meat, cheese, and bread. Same idea with a well done (as in cooked properly and simply seasoned and not the cooking temp) steak. No need for any acutraments.

I am not saying I don't put condiments on burgers ever, but if I am making them myself at home, I rarely find the need to add.

An American Cheeseburger dominates anything the world could ever throw at it. If it's done right, there's no need for any condiments.

That's the place - Japanese grocery and food court in Edgewater. I live about 20 minutes away.

If I had to pick the minimum toppings for a burger I fresh ground myself and cooked it - I would use a little bit of Mayo and some raw onions - that's it.

I do like burgers with a Shake Shack style sauce on them - ketchup/mayo/some sort of finely minced pickle in there - plus raw onions and maayyyybe tomato. But that's it. I don't load my cheeseburgers with toppings. No bacon, no blue cheese, no hot sauce, no nothing else. I stick to those two variations 95% of the time.

I agree that burgers can be very very good with sauces on them as well as some onion or pickle. I'll take bacon too as I will almost never turn that down in any pig related form. I just really enjoy a perfectly seasoned, hand formed burger, especially in my backyard on a summer day. To me, it doesn't get any better, ever.

I do live right around y'all. Edgewater is like 20 minutes north of me. Zeze posted a thread just the other day for a meetup with the NYC metro area folks and a few of us responded. Check it out if you are interested. It should be a hoot. I'm already planning my disguise
