What do you do when you miss work and it's entirely your fault? *Update*

Update: Well what ended up happening is that when I got to work, my boss asked me "So are you still sick?" (I had missed work on Monday because I picked up a flu on sunday and was feeling really bad, but I had called in and came in on tuesday, which is my day off). And I just said yes. I didn't feel great about lying, but I got off easy

Well I think I'm in deep sh1t tomorrow :(
The kind of story that is true, but nobody will believe.
I don't have an alarm clock at home, so I have Windows task scheduler wake me up with some good music every morning. Unfortunately for me, I left a download running overnight, and my system crashed while I was sleeping, therefore when I woke up in the afternoon (notice I didn't say morning), my computer was waiting for me to log on. I don't get why, but Windows requires a password to schedule tasks. Were this password not required, it would have logged in automatically and I wouldn't have missed work. Unfortunately, I slept right through the entire day, so I never had a chance to call in.

The problem is I live in a big apartment with several other people, and I just happen to have the only room with no windows, so even during the day, if the lights are out, it's pitch black. So sunlight will not wake me up.

I know I'm gonna have to take sh1t from my boss tomorrow, and it was partly my fault. But I know my boss doesn't believe my explanations (which he calls excuses).

Anyone have any ideas on how to soften the blow and hopefully keep my job? I'm getting seriously stressed out about this. I've been late a few times too many and I've gotten sh1t for not going to work when I actually was sick.

It doesn't seem like there's much you can do. Kind of like the story about the boy who cried wolf. Now that you have a legitimate reason to miss work, no one is going to believe you.

Part time job or full time?

Why didn't you call as soon as you woke up to explain?

I don't think your boss will mind too much. Just eat a few more children than you usually do and it will all smooth over :)

I wouldn't work for a jerk that didn't trust me, unless I had given him a reason to not trust me. In fact I would probably take a dump on his desk if he fired me.

Had a bunch of bosses that didn't accept or believe any explainations I gave them. Just admit it was 100% your fault and hopefully he will give ya a break.

I didn't call to explain because by the time I woke up, work was already over, and I'm assuming he didn't stick around for the fun of it.
Truth is I feel like a complete moron. I slept 16 hours straight. That's not good.

The reason I'm worried is that I could very well lose my job for this, being that I'm completely expendable. And I won't get unemployment if I lose my job, cause I haven't been working long enough.
And I really don't wanna start the job hunt again. I'm gonna have to catch up 2 weeks of salary in one, or pay my rent a week late.

Honestly, I really could screw him over if he did fire me, but then again, I'd have no reason to because it's my fault.

That sucks man, it has happened to me before too. Take responsibility and don't give him a chance to interject negativity by covering it all youself, hopefully he will let it slide.

My advice? Take full blame for it if they don't let you off at least a little easy, and go buy two or three alarm clocks.

Sadly I used to have 2 alarm clocks and when I moved, I think I left them behind by accident. Now I have none.

The pathetic part is I get up later than everyone else anyway, so if I don't wake up in time, there's nobody else around to wake me up.

Yep, go buy some more alarm clocks. I screw up a lot when setting the time, and once in a while 2/3 alarms fail.

I would never use my computer to wake me up, its not as reliable as a standalone alarm clock.

Make sure to start an atkin's diet a couple days before that.

Reminds me of one of my first great jobs. Dumped a crappy position working for a school district's IT department making $10/hr to take another job working for Kronos at $35k/yr (hey, at 19 years old, that seemed like a lot of money to me.) Anyway, first couple weeks went great, then for no apparent reason, I had a 4 day stint of coming in late by at least 3 hours each day. The only thing I can come up with is that maybe when the alarm went off, instead of hitting snooze i hit the off button. To say the least, I augmented my standalone alarm clock with my computer (playing metallica full blast on a pretty decent 4.1 surround system in my bedroom), along with an alarm on my cell phone and my watch. Never late again, altho the neighbors hated me for a while. =)

You don't have a cell phone so you can set an alarm on that? Just buy an alarm clock.. you really have no excuse for the no call no show.

If they keep you, a $<10 alarm clock is a good investment, eh.

Maybe a lamp hooked up to a timer too...

coming in late once will cost you the job? Wow. You can always work longer, no?

i dont understand how you wouldnt have woken up at some point in all that.
and why not get an alarm clock?
its only a few bucks and becuase you know you arnt going to wake up on time naturally, it does seem like a good purchase.

Agreed. There's no excuse to not have an alarm clock. You can easily get one for less than 5 bucks.

Going to bed on a consistent basis / Getting a good nights sleep eliminates this scenario. If you are anything like me, you either went to bed late that night or you went to bed way too late the night before that. Either way, the fact that you are posting at 2:46 sort of makes me pretty sure that this is the case. Yes you want an alarm clock, but if you want to get to work on time, get a decent nights sleep also. If you go to bed ontime on a consistent basis, it is very unlikely that you will ever oversleep more than an hour or 2 (if all your alarm clocks broke).

Tell your boss you screwed up and that you are taking measures to insure that it won't happen again.

Soften the blow. I think you answered your own question on how you can keep your job.
