Well I had trouble sleeping the couple days before, being that I caught a flu on sunday and I was really messed up on monday and tuesday.
But 16 hours is quite unusual. I have trouble figuring out how I slept so much.
And the truth is the reason why I was up so late last night was that I'm really stressed out about this, and it makes it very hard for me to sleep.
Anyway, I'm off to work in a couple minutes, and I'll find out what kind of sh1t I'm in.

Heh. I have a similiar problem. My winamp alarm WILL always go off; however, it's a tossup as to what level the computer has decided to set the volume this time. about 3/4 of the time, it'll default to almost nothing, and I never hear the alarm. the other quarter, it'll either stay at what level I originally set it at, or default to almost full blast. That's not fun, but it does get me up.

Thankfully I have cool employers that accept the reason "I overslept". We're all humans, and succeptable to mistakes. I've botched an alarm once or twice in my life and set it to PM instead of AM, as has my wife. If it's a rare occurance, and not a habit, I'd excuse it. That's the way my employer is.

Spend $15 and buy a second clock just for safe measure.

I mean sheesh, if I would get fired for every time I'm a little bit late...

my employer is extremly cool about it, it actually doesn't matter when I come in, I just have to do my job and work my hours.

If you have a history of being late, and then out of the blue missed an entire day with no phone call (and the poor excuse "slept 16 hours" ), then yes termination is not out of the question. If this is a "one time" incident, then you should be able to keep your job.

What type of job do you have???

Same here. It's almost like being salaried here. Come in late, leave late. Or leave on time. Just make sure your tasks are finished when due.

I always call... but there has been a couple of times when I've had similar situations occur. I always use the radio setting on my alarm clock because I can't stand the noise the buzzer makes. If the buzzer goes off my nerves are shot all day long. Anyway, one time a thunderstorm occurred overnight and it knocked out the radio station to which I had set the alarm set. So I woke up and about an hour after I was supposed to be at work and thought I forgot to set the alarm but then realized the alarm was on but it was just playing dead air.

sorry bud, looks like you're going to learn a hard lesson.

buy an alarm clock (two if you have trouble waking up) and go to bed earlier.

Tell him his wife made you promise her you'd keep it a secret.

Then put a open condom wrapper on his desk and give him a thumbs up.

She can't hold you responsible since you didn't say anything.

One time I got up on Saturday around 7:00AM and just started horsing around on my computer. Downloaded some demos, read the news. Played a game. Whatever. About 9:30 I went back upstairs and my wife woke up. She asked me what the hell I was doing. I said, all calm, "nothing, really."

She said, "Why didn't you go to work?".

"It's Saturday," I said.

"Patrick, it's FRIDAY."

"Sweet Mother of God, you're sh1tting me!", I said.

I ran downstairs and checked the clock/date on Windows. It was Friday. I was already 1.5 hours late.

Now THAT was retarded trying to explain that to my boss. He didn't believe I had got up on time at first. I just told the story over and over until it was settled.

What happened is that during the school year, my son comes to my house on Friday nights. During the summer, he comes over on Thursday nights. It was the first weekend of the summer, so it was the first Thursday night dad's weekend of the year. Scrambled my internal calendar.

I agree. Just say it's your fault. Take the blame. Be a man. Hopefully he will respect that and give you a break. Maybe you can offer to make up the time over the next few days, if your job is like that.

do you have a race/sex/age/disability card? try to threaten with an eeo if he fires you :)

that's pathetic

it may be pathetic but so is not having an alarm in the first place. he is going to be fired, so he has nothing to lose and figured that this might be his way since being a good employee isn't an option

Tell the truth. I missed an opportunity to go see the largest swingspan bridge in the US while it was being constructed (somewhere in Mississippi).

My excuse: I set my alarm to wake me at 4PM...when I needed to be up at 4AM. When I told the supervisor, she just laughed and everything was OK.

That's a funny story. :D For me, I'll usually wake up late on a day off and freak. The wife gets a big kick out of that. Especially since I don't get in trouble for being late.

Forget taking the blame.

1. DON'T GO IN TO WORK. Have someone call and tell your boss you were very sick and today you're still recovering from food poisoning or something. Have her tell the boss that she was supposed to call for you, but forgot to do so and apologize to the boss. Then you'll be forgiven.

2. Go steal something small at the local mini mart and get caught on purpose. Then you'd be arrested. Call from the jail and say you've been arrested and will return asap.
