CO and WY are definitely West, not Midwest.

MotionMan

They're on the border, and honestly the mountains are right there. Why they're not considered a west/midwest border is silly. We make up these imaginary dividing lines and ignore the massive, towering and natural dividing areas. But being from CO I'm biased. I know how different the "western slope" is from the rest of CO, and how long it takes to get from one to the other.

Unless you consider the plains states to be a subset of a broader midwest category.

Except that regional categories should not have subsets such as that - at least not subsets so vastly different as the flat, prarie kansas vs, say, ohio.

That's pretty much how it breaks down to me. The Southeast would be a subset of the South, East of and including Mississippi.

this.

It is definitely important to distinguish the Southeast from the South, or the Southwest, even. Perhaps just southeast and southwest.

The southeast wants no part of Texas, that is for fucking sure.

lol, Texas doesn't want to be part of anything. Texas wants to be Texas and it's own country.

I'll make it easy for everyone, you're in the Midwest if you say Pop.

Not so fast...

KS NE and the dakotas are not midwest. They are plains states, like oklahoma. Which is not southwestern like some say

I would call them the plains states of the Midwest.

Kind of like how "Wrigleyville" is a small section of the Lakeview neighborhood in the city of Chicago.

Yes indeed. Like states with population ranks #5, #7, #8, #14, and half of #6.

Yea cus Wyoming, Idaho, North/South Dakota, Montana and the rest of those are very populace. Like I said, the lowest populated States.

I've never trusted that pic though. I've rarely heard anyone in Colorado or Wyoming say "pop". I also think "coke" is over represented in Florida, and not nearly represented enough on the West Coast.

Engrish?

So you're only going to count the states with a low population. I see.

because that's what is in it. I'm not making it up. Look at places where it's populated in the mid-west, the highly populated places don't say pop, the lower populated areas of those same states do say pop. So if you live in low populated areas, you say pop.

You mean like all of Ohio, Detroit and all surrounding areas and Chicago? Ohio is one of the highest populated states.

Look what I said, high population areas don't use pop, the low populated areas in those same states do use pop. Plus the rest of the lowest populated states use pop so that shows if you live in the middle of no where, you say pop.

well, according to that map, Chicago is in the "50-80% say 'Pop'" category. 3rd-largest city in the country, massive population center. Certainly the biggest in the midwest, and probably 4th metro area overall (I assume the entire Bay Area has more people--If this fucking traffic is to be believed)

But, to be honest, I never met a native Chicagoan that said pop while I was there for 5 years.

well, not that I remember, anyway. Perhaps they were too ashamed of their low class ways to out themselves to an outsider?

That's what I'm saying, high population areas like Chicago and others use the proper word. In that same state, the low population areas say pop. So basically if you say pop we know you live in the middle of no where. Plus all the lowest populated states unanimously say it.

i grew up in kansas and missouri. midwest to me is kansas, missouri, iowa, nebraska, illinois. indiana and ohio, especially, are way too far east to have "west" in their moniker.

I wouldn't link minnesota, dakotas, wisconsin or michigan in with the midwest because the climate is completely different and they all act like canadians. Its possible that canadians are the ones acting like the aforementioned states, but we hate them all, just the same.

I find people who never lived in the Mid West think of it as a geographical area as opposed to Mid Westerners who think of it as a socioeconomic grouping.

This, exactly. The midwest is that part of the country expected to bail out and support the rest of the country in their failures. We are the middle-class workers of this country that keep the gears turning.
