Lady Smith... The hours required for proficiency are much lower, and many states have concealed carry permits... again, only a few hours and a background check to qualify. It has been said that most guns used in the prevention of a crime are never fired. Simply presenting the perp with the potential for a bad case of lead poisoning often makes them reconsider.
I'm not sure if that is an option where you live, but if so it is something that might be given some consideration.

If you get the good stuff, it will cost you more than $5. I have "For law enforcement use only" in big black letters on the side of my can and my girl's can for a damn good reason. 🙂

Pepper spray may work under ideal conditions, but the truth is, by the time you realize your being assaulted, it is too late for that.

I would strongly recommend against going to a concealed carry handgun for this sort of defensive use for a person unfamiliar with guns. Going out there with only a few hours of training with any handgun is foolish. Concealed carry in my opinion should require a heck of a lot more training and experience than most states require unfortunately. Unless thier is some specific threat such a stalker to deal with, some basic training, an advantage such as pepper spray or a key chain mini baton, and a good deal of situational awareness should be more than adequate.
Edit: I am also a firm believer that you should never draw your weapon unless you intend to use it, particularly if you are a civillian. Brandishing it, warning shots, and crap like that have always seemed foolish. If I do draw my sidearm in a personal defense situation it is because I believe my life or anothers is in imminenet danger or I am in imminent danger of suffering great bodily harm and I will use it, not point it , not show it off, not flash it around, but put as many shots center mass as necessary to neautralize the threat.

I seem to recall some research that recommended true Tear Gas-based sprays over only pepper-based sprays. Of course, it costs more.

If you have a question you should contact your local Mace retailer or Police Department. Aerosol Defense Sprays are meant for defensive purposes only are can only be sold to or used by persons 18 years of age or older.

I used to carry around some of the original stuff. The "Triple Action Personal Model" design is pretty good. First, it comes with a keychain, so if you put your keys on it, it'll always be handy. Especially in a deserted parking lot at night. Second, it's compact enough to shove in your front pocket (although it is a bit bulky). Third, and most importantly, the flip-top trigger guard prevents accidental use. I carried this thing around in my pocket for over a year, and never had it go off accidentally. Fourth, the sprayer fits easily and intuitively in your hand. Nothing complicated to remember in an emergency. Fifth, it doesn't have an exterior carrying case to fumble around with.
IMHO, having something in an emergency is better than having nothing. Not only that, but I think the psychological effect of having a defensive weapon is a major plus, especially for women. It reminds the person carrying it to be alert, and gives her another option besides just running and screaming.

Canada treats any form of pepper spray jusy like a gun. Many cities and towns in the US have nearly the same restrictions. Stun guns are included! Using one will get you jail time. 'Mace' is probably outlawed as well.

There is no law in Hoover or Alabama that requires a permit for pepper spray. Secondly, I can get you Law Enforcement grade pepper spray from a friend of mine. Thirdly, wind is only a problem in AL on rare occasions(ie severe wx or tornados). Fourthly, Pepper Spray can be bought to work on a key chain. Last but not least, get the stuff and know how to use it!
