Olympus 3000Z. Good for amateur like me. I can`t see getting over 3.34Megapixels unless you`re going to print posters. Zoom in detail is awesome in TIFF mode. Around 640Kb a pic!

<< Czar,
Put up at least one really high res pic (TIFF), or am I saving it in the wrong format?
>>

Tiff is the highest quality, but it also takes up so much space, thats why I havent taken many pictures in tiff, or even at the highest resolution. With the resolution I normaly use I can take around 150 pictures on the two cards I have, also that anoyes me about the big file sizes of tiff images is that it takes so long to write on the card.

But I'll take one at highest res when I get home, just to show off 😛

I Have 2. I have an Olympus C-700UZ, and an Olympus 2100Uz. I love them both, and wouldn't be able to give either up now. I got the c-700 because I wanted the 10x optical zoom in a small package. I don't see the big deal in IS, I can handhol the camera at 10x all the way down to a shutter of 1/25 in decent lighting. Plus, the camera takes much more accurate colored shots then my 2100UZ, and the white balance is amazing.

CASIO 2900ux

2.11Mpixel, 8x optical zoom. It's cheap enough but still offers a lot of maunal overrides. A real good entry level DC for amateur use and learning photographic skill.

stonecold, you must have some steady hands. i've used IS/non-IS before and the difference for me is night and day. either that or the 10x in the c700 is just done very well 🙂

i like the 2100, but the EVF is what gets me. but i would use it mainly outdoors anyway. plus the 49mm standard thread is great. toss on a b300 and you have yourself a pretty nice telephoto setup. i just need to find me some spare money to get it 🙂

I've got the Olympus 3020 (which is the replacement for the 3030, it was discontinued). The 3020 is an absolute kick butt camera. I love it in every way.

Originally i was looking at a Nikon 995, but it was overpriced for it's image quality. Also after talking to a couple camera shops, they all recommended the Olympus over the Nikon because it has a far superior lens. The lens is very important and i wanted a quality lens.

I've only had the camera for about a month and half, but its been great. It was my first digital camera!!

As far as the Tiff pictures, they are quite large. Unless you are doing any true publishing, it's not viable to use in everyday use. The files come out to about 8-9mb each, so it fills up a card pretty quick! Great color saturation though and quality.

Sony DSC-P50 2.1 Megapixel. Not bad, nice to be able to take video clips up to the available space on the memory stick. No sound though.

<< Canon S110. I like the size. Outdoor quality is pretty good. Indoor quality is not so good unless it's really bright. The flash on the S110 is pretty poor and the lens is tiny so indoor you really need to tripod it to get crisp pictures.

But having a camera that fits comfortably in your pocket makes up for not great low-light performance IMHO.

I have the same camera and I totally agree.... it's a great little camera and does it's job. If I had any money I would probably also get a G2 or something like that...

Cameras I have or have had.

Canon G2 (4 MP): My personal camera. Also getting one with a ring flash for work to take pix of small objects.
Olympus 3030Z (3 MP): My microscrope camera for work.
Kodak DC4800 (3 MP): My old personal camera, now sold to a friend.

Cameras I've inherited at work:
Kodak DCS200 (old pro 1.5 MP digicam with Nikon 8008 SLR body): Only works with SCSI hookup, but my SCSI Mac is dead (dead SCSI drive), and my SCSI PC has too much crap on it. Strangely enough, the TWAIN driver does work in Windows 2000 and Mac OS 8 (until my Mac died), despite the camera being about 8 years old.
Kodak DCS420 (old pro 1.5 MP digicam with Nikon N90s SLR body): The body works but the built in hard drive seems dead. I could never get this damn thing to work, even after replacing the drive (which Kodak sent to me for free, despite the thing being 5 years out of warranty).

nikon coolix 800....fantastic little camera...2.1 MP....does 5x7's flawlessly....haven't tried an 8x10...i don't think that would work to well...but the digital quality of the pictures is incredible

<< Sony DSC 85. pretty good camera. probably would buy something different if i had to do it over again. but at the time it was the only consumer model availble w/ 4.1 megapixel. >>

I was looking into this camera. noticed just recently that the price went down $100, now $700. would u still pick something else?

<< 2.1 MP....does 5x7's flawlessly....haven't tried an 8x10... >>

Yeah, 2.1 MP does 5x7" well, but 8x10 not so well. At 2.1 MP a 5x7" pic is around 230 dpi. An 8x10" will be around 150 dpi. I find that quality really starts to suffer below 200 dpi, and I generally won't print anything below 150 dpi (unless for a poster or something).

My local photo shop recommends 300 to 400 dpi. For my Canon's 2272x1704, 300 dpi is 7.6x5.6 and 400 dpi is 5.7x4.3. :Q I find after about 300 dpi I don't notice much difference though, and 250 is already very good.

lnguyen:

The reason that the lack of IS on the C700 is alright is that unlike my 2100 The weight and size are much more compact. With my 2100 I have a good 4 inches more of barrel to worry about throwing it's center of balance off, and there is weight over a much greater area with it. With battery and card in, the C700 weighs around 1 1/2 lbs, which you can easily stead completely on your cheek.

Regardless, one still REALLY wants to get in perfect lighting, having 1/1000sec shutter speed is very nice for still shots😉
