iPod?iPhone? iPad? Didn't all these technologies already developed prior to Apple corps success? Was the idea of the iPhone solely his idea or was it his R&D team's idea but he gets the credit for being CEO? How is he known as the pioneer of our time?

I think it's through micromanaging style, and development direction. It isn't so much inventing technology as it is refining it. I'm not a fan, but a lot of people are. I value flexibility and customization over the appliance approach Apple uses.

It's well known that his name is on over 60 patents.

Pretty sure it's over 300.

But Steve didn't really invent things. He directed people who invented things, and he recognized good ideas and brought them to market. He certainly guided Apple in the right direction. How many people have taken a company from the verge of bankruptcy (with a little help from Gil Amelio) to the largest market cap in the world?

Steve Job's Patents

The 317 Apple patents that list Steven P. Jobs among the group of inventors offer a glimpse at his legendary say over the minute details of the company’s products — from the company’s iconic computer cases to the glass staircases that are featured in many Apple stores.

Even an R&D team needs direction. They aren't just told "Make a phone" and they have at it.

I am not sure why so many want to turn Jobs into a guy that just directed things. The guy was a genius and changed the face of home computing, brought the digital music player to the mainstream and changed the landscape of the cell phone arena.

So many argue that any of his inventions could have been invented by someone else with more time...that is true of almost all our inventions, the difference being the sooner one comes to market the faster we all benefit.

This x2. That's how Apple started. Jobs met this basement nerd(The other Steve) who tinkered with hardware and saw mass potential in his creations.
He was well spoken and sold the nerd's creations to venture capitalists for mass production, and before he was 20, he was a millionaire.

I see. You want to discredit the man because he may (likely?) have not developed or designed those items himself.

Well here's something you may not realize. Even if someone else came up with the ideas, they needed an executive who would see it and capitalize on the idea, a person to seize the moment and make the most out of that product.

No one can argue that Apple is worse off today than it was when Jobs came back. It released some popular products during his tenure. That required a person in charge with the vision to lead the company in the right direction.

That doesn't mean his ghost isn't a giant douche. ():)

Steve Jobs probably reflexively kicked himself in the face every time the name "Thinkpad" was mentioned. It is a totally awesome name that should have been thought of by Apple first. That the sticks-in-the-mud at IBM came up with it before Apple probably still bugs him.

Sigh...

Steve was a leader, not an engineer or scientist. Part of being a great leader is having vision and surrounding yourself with people who share that vision. He knew how to implement the stuff so he could sell it. He hired people to implement the stuff that he thought of and to do it in a way that he wanted it because he was not technically capable of doing it.

Jesus - not this again.

You know, for people who contantly complain about how Apple is so "in your face", you assholes sure spend most of your time getting in people's face about Apple's overzealousness.

What's the matter, did the jerks at the genius bar refuse to replace your 1st gen old school iPod with a new iPod touch?
