What did Steve Jobs invent or thought up himself?

It's well known that his name is on over 60 patents.

I've worked for several companies where company executive names were on patent applications who had absolutely no technical or meaningful input on the invention being patented other than running the company that hired the person that actually invented whatever it was.

So since Henry Ford didn't invent the car, I guess he should get no credit for the success of the automobile?

Should Tesla get no credit for the development of electricity, even though he developed the means of transmitting AC current?

Apple takes existing technologies, and makes them accessible to the masses instead of niche techie products.

They reinvented the music industry to accommodate the MP3.

They reinvented the smart phone industry by doing away with the stylus in favor of a touch interface.

They essentially invented the tablet market.

Attempting to dispute any of those 3 points makes you look like a fool.

Tablets and capacitive screens were around WELL before Apple did anything with them. And Apple didn't "reinvent the music industry". Hell, the music industry would LOVE to see Apple DIAF, given Apple gets to rake them over the coals in terms of royalty licensing (Apple always gets favorable terms, lest Apple tells the RIAA to fuck off).

There, I disputed. Apple contributed NOTHING technologically to the game. Jobs was simply better at making existing technology appealing by wearing a black turtleneck and telling his loyal Applemmings to go buy overpriced shit.

there is a difference between making something better and inventing. Jobs did what many couldn't (in fact very few can) he took existing tech and made it better and usable. would we still have mp3 players, laptops, tablets (that one is questionable)? sure. would they be like they are today? doubtful.

They guy was a brilliant tech leader and i am thankful for him. i don't think we would have the style tech we do without him (for the record i don't own any apple products).

They invented the market for these, absolutely. Those devices and technology had been around at least a decade prior--not that you didn't suggest that.

--especially with tablet, they were relatively late to the market, in a way, but they certainly were the ones to make it work.

Why are so many apple haters caught up on "invent" vs "innovate" vs "market". Does it really matter? The guy/company that can take something that ordinary people have no use for and turn it into something that people cant live without is what really matters. When Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were tinkering with computers in their garages, their were thousands of nerds sitting in their moms basements doing the same thing. These guys were the ones that built Fortune 100 companies out of it, and put the products in peoples living rooms, desks, and pockets.

Hell, I write ecommerce web sites for a living. You think the About Us page of our sites has a big picture of my face and my bio? Hell no, somebody else much more successful than me is leveraging my skill set to build a business and make the real money. Thats just the way the world works.

He invented Apple corp...everything that comes after that is because of him, whether it would be here now if he had never existed is moot

Steve Jobs invented a religion.

"Cult" might fit it more, just like Mormonism is. Not sure if there is a difference though. D:

Cult - a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.

Religion -
the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices.

I don't consider him a genius, just a great marketer. He really only nabbed success when the iPod somehow became a status symbol. It just blew up from there. His cancer diagnosis only served to make him sympathetic, which helped even more.

Well it's fairly easy to see why the ipod became the success it did. EVERYONE likes music and like to carry around music with them. If you looked at the combined walkman, portable CD, MP3 player industry BEFORE the ipod you were looking at quite a big fucking industry taken as a whole. The first ipod basically made all those devices obsolete as it was exactly what all those devises should have been from the beginning and what people had been wishing for all along. A simple easy to use and carry devise that managed to store thousands of high quality songs and "just worked". Add on the fact that it was the most stylish and sleek devise anyone had seen come along and its popularity was sealed. The genius has been managing to repeat that same success over and over through the years. I don't like jobs any more than you do, I think he was an unlikable douche to tell you the truth. But I give him credit for seeing what the market wanted, and didn't know it wanted, and delivering on it exceptionally well.

Don't you understand? It wasn't an accident that the iPod become a success - it was due to some really visionary people.

Like Apple or hate them, their success is very real, and Steve Jobs was a big part of that.

"The 317 Apple patents that list Steven P. Jobs among the group of inventors offer a glimpse at his legendary say over the minute details of the company’s products — from the company’s iconic computer cases to the glass staircases that are featured in many Apple stores"

Basically - he was a control freak. As long as he had any say on the design - then his name can be listed on the patent.

I'm just amazed at the sheer # of people who are listed as inventors for a CLASP... 🙂

He was indeed a control freak from what I understand. This explains both his success and why it was nearly impossible to work with him.
