$1,000,000 in US dollars is NOT a lot of cash, when you really get down to it. Not that I wouldn't take it if offered... Norway is nice, and the people seem nice, but I can't make heads nor tails of the language. Not to mention the fact that Scandinavian pr0n is just a bit weird (there's always cows, for one thing..)

But you're not Japanese. If them being openly racist does'nt bother you It's a very clean country.

Not to mention your 1 million US$ is worth about a buck fifty there.

What shocks me here is that people are naming countries in which their money will go half as far, or worse... not to mention those countries that will tax you into poverty.

Well, if I wanted to get away from technology, i.e. Internet, computers, cell phones, etc. I'd move to Bermuda. Went there on our honeymoon and it's the best place ever. They drive these tiny little cars at I think 20kph max I think.

Right now, I'd quit my job and bum around Europe and Asia, student style. Live relatively cheap, let the money earn some interest over a couple of years. If I found a place that I really liked, cool, otherwise, I'd love to keep travelling. Australia, Central and South America and Africa would be next up. Then I'd probably want to come home :)

Have you ever actually lived in Japan? Just asking because you are making a pretty blatant blanket statement there. Sure, Japanese are racist, but not much more so than Americans OR Germans OR Hungarians. I mean, I know there is some pretty outrageous stuff going on here (like 2nd or 3rd generation Koreans still being considered aliens), but hey, it really only has been 50 years since the world war. Considering how long Japanese people live (Japan is among the top five countries for average life expectancy), it is not surprising to see that some of the old hatred still lives on. If I were to talk about racism, I would bring up my very own country as an example before pointing fingers at someone else's. 5 per cent of our population is made up of Gypsies, who have to face discrimination in every area of their lives. Or take Germany, for example, where foreign-looking people are often (well, often enough to make the news) targets of physical abuse. OR how about the good ol' States where not so long ago black people were considered inferior in many parts of the country, and even now there is so much tension between people of different colour that you can get beat up/killed for looking at someone funny?

I know that the States has come a long way since the days of slavery, but consider how young the country is and how rapidly it has evolved from a colony to superpower. A young culture welcomes change, it thrives on it, whereas Japan, a country of thousands of years of history and tradition, will move along at a much slower pace. This might sound a little rough, cruel even, but the older generations have to die out here before radical changes can be made. Yes, old people most likely still despise Koreans and some of them (I actually met one or two) probably consider all foreigners criminals, but these will be the same people whose neighbours might have been flying kamikaze airplanes to a glorious death. You know just as well as I do that after a certain age it is pretty hard to change one's way of thinking. If you talk to young Japanese people, you will be hard-pressed to find any hint of racial bias, and even if you do, I still think that you cannot blame them for being affected by the hatred of their ancestors. Give this country some time and they will shake off all the remains of the old nationalist empire. Changes happen slowly here, but they do happen eventually.

Living in Japan certainly has its disadvantages, and yes, it is tough to be a foreigner here, not many people end up settling down in Japan for good, but for some it is worth it. And you never know, you could be one of them.

Anyways, sorry about that little rant. I feel a little overprotective when I hear people bashing Japan. I like this place, and I like these people. (Oh, yeah, in case you have not figured it out yet, I live in Japan.)

I'll second that. :) Alhtough Australia comes preeeeetty close. My wife is from there. I have been fortunate enough to visit the Land of "Oz" twice. (Going again this December!!! YAY!) Love the country, love the people. Aussies are the friendliest folk in the whole wide world. They are also very open and straightforward. My No.2 choice would definitely be Australia.

Northern Germany, proximity to Berlin and Amsterdam, as well as Belgium and England; and great beer.

Just got to work or I would have responded earlier.. I appologise for making a blanket statement but it's true to some degree as you noted. Just as saying all Japanese girls are virgins would be a blanket statement but still true to some degree.

No problems! :)

By the way, my 3rd choice would be Switzerland! Anyone who has ever been there surely must have fallen in love with the country... The beauty of the Swiss Alps is breathtaking. Oh, and the food is great. They have the best bread in Switzerland. Did I mention the mountains were beautiful? :D

And that the food was great? J/K :D

I would stay in the United States, and take that $1 million and invest it. If lucky enough to make a profit, I would then use that to travel the world, visiting each country at least once.

If I couldn't stay in the USA, Germany would be my next choice for number of reasons............

Was stationed there for 10 years and am fairly capable with the language. Understand the culture and society. The country is centrally located in Europe offering numerous opportunity for diversified travel. The summertime, when it's not raining or overcast, is absolutely gorgeous. The women are fine; Autobahn is awesome; and the beer is beautiful! What more might a man want?

Yeah!!! I've never seen a place as stunningly gorgeous as the Alps. Switzerland, as a whole, is a wonderful country. It's expensive, but worth every penny! If money were no object I'd move to Switzerland, no question. I'd love to have a place in Zurich and a cabin in the Lauterbrunnen valley. Ahhh... a guy can dream!

I'd stay in America, build a house in New Orleans, buy a corvette, and put the rest in the bank.

Why? You ever been to New Orleans? It's great. Plus I'm from the area.

And it's nice and humid.

I would take a trip to Alaska and Canada though. I've heard they're beautiful!

France. I'd have an apartment in Paris and a place in the country in southern france (preferably with its own vineyard).:D

Skiing, cycling, wine, good food....sounds good to me.
