sure... in most asian bathrooms, they have these squat toilets which never gets dirty cuz you never touch it when using it, and they are oh so much better than those nasty american ones where everyone sits on the same chair to take a sh**t. bleh... =P

but also, most nations that i've been to maintain an incredible amount of etiquette when they eat, and stuff like spitting on the floor, chewing bubblegum, and leaving trash out in the streets is a near crime (think japan, singapore, taiwan's starting to become like that now), public transit is my lover and span, hanging clothes out to dry is illegal cuz it looks bad. there are so many ways...

I'd choose Australia because the US currency is so strong against the Aussie dollar, the people are friendly, things are reasonably priced (I could kiss all the Hot Deals good bye though), housing is affordable and the quality of life is good. I'd just invest most of the money and travel the continent then become a beach bum.

I take it you have been to Australia then. Which part of the country is your wife from? My wife is from Adelaide (yeah, I know, countryside...), so I have spent the most time there, but I have also been to Melbourne and Sydney for short visits. One time we drove all the way from Adelaide to Melbourne along the coast, going down Great Ocean Road, which was the most beautiful place I have seen so far in Australia.

I know what you mean by having to say Hot Deals good bye. Last time I was over there I put together two machines (one for father-in-law, one for brother-in-law - always the geek :)), and parts prices were absolutely ridiculous... Japan is much cheaper, plus we get new parts here very early - sometimes earlier than the States even -, although we still cannot beat the bargain prices those lucky Americans get.

New Zeland (because I like their politics and I speak the lingo) Also I LOVE those accents (on the women at least)

Or Belize because, well it's COOL, and I speak the lingo. :D

Palek - She's from the capital city Canberra ACT (I think 99% of Americans assume Sydney is the capital of Australia which it isn't, however it is the capital of NSW). I've only been there once and can't wait to visit again. If I can find a reasonably well paying job and a nice place to live I would even consider moving there but that's only after paying off ALL my U.S. debts and probably giving a family member or trusted friend Power of Attorney in case I need them to do any banking business for me here in the states.

I spent 2 weeks in Australia last year August when we got married. Arrived in Sydney, flew straight to Canberra stayed there, did the tourist thing, met her family, got married, went to Sydney for 3-4 days.

When we visit in a few years I'd like to see more of Sydney, Melbourne and where her sister lives in Brisbane. When I visit I'll probably arrange some interviews while I'm down there, if I get a good offer and find a nice place to live then I might move down there.

I'll certainly save a sh!t load of money since I won't be partaking in the sinful fruit of Hot Deals anymore.

I priced out a Dell on Dell Australia's website and it was like USD $1,600 for a P3/1GHz with low end hardware. So before I visit I'll definitely buy a laptop here, buy a universal power adapter/surge protector and bring it with me there.

Klassy, the bay area weather is great. I know yakko agrees. I was just kidding though about it being too cold in the summer in NZ, cause that's when it's winter there. :D

And this has to do with body odor... how? Remember how I spoke of "stinky people?" Where the fusk did I mention public transportation and clothes lines?

As I said, most (not all) of the world does not have the (personal) hygiene customs the US has, i.e., Most of the world still does not use deordorant, nor do they believe a shower or bath is something to be done at least daily. I have no doubt Japan is not one of these places, however, I have met quite a few folks from other asian countries in which my observation holds true.

If money were no object I'd move to Switzerland, no question. I'd love to have a place in Zurich and a cabin in the Lauterbrunnen valley. Ahhh... a guy can dream!

l2c

Well, as long as we are dreaming :D, my Swiss log cabin would be in Zermatt, in the Valais region. Has anyone ever been there? It is the most beautiful place in the whole world I have ever seen. The town is up at the end of a valley, surrounded by mountains in excess of 4000 metres on three sides. Zermatt itself is pretty high up at 1600 metres. No combustion-engine vehicles are allowed inside, you have to leave your car in a parking lot a few kms down the valley and ride a train or electric car up into Zermatt. The air is so clean that it feels almost unnatural (funny, that). The largest glacier in the world (chain of glaciers actually) available for skiing all year round can be found here, and you can actually cross over to Italy on your skis. There are plenty of mountains to climb for those who feel like doing some hard-core rock-climbing or just want to go on a hike. The world's highest-reaching cable-car line is also located in Zermatt, it climbs up right to the top of Klein Matterhorn which is about 3800 metres. In case the name Matterhorn sounds familiar, yes, the "real" Matterhorn is also in Zermatt.

Man, I love that place! :) My wife and I hope to go back there one day... Maybe even for good, who knows. Although I would have to learn German first! :)

AmusedOne, you do realize that the U.S. is a very rich country with relatively high standards of living, don't you? Being able to buy deodorants and to take a bath every day may be totally normal to you, but that "majority" of the world you are talking about, they consider themselves lucky if they have electricity in the house, or one bed per person. Would it shock you if I told you that deodorants are probably luxury items in some parts of the world? Or that not eveyone has tap water in their homes?

To go around degrading these people by calling them "stinky", is just what ed21x called it, ignorance.

I know many who have retired in Australia due to the low/no taxes on retires and the higher standard of living compared to retirement here in the US. They seem very happy and seldom visit the US anymore...

Why would you want to move in the first place? I'd probably go to German for a month and buy an Audi RS4 and hit der Autobahn every day to get this danged passion for speeding out of my system. Then I'd happily come back.

No, its reality. He's not degrading them, he's stating what he think are facts. They may be poor, they may not be but if they are stinky, they are stinky. Just because we are rich and can afford deoderant, and they are poor and cant, doesnt change the fact they are stinky.

HUH? You'd want to live in a Lawless country? Am I the only one who thinks this is stupid?

Well, I think it does display ignorance when someone says, "Oh, and I can't stand stinky people." Doesn't a remark like that smack of a person who thinks all people should use deodorants to make life more bearable for HIM? I am not saying that AmusedOne was actually on this opinion, but he might have as well said, "Oh, and I can't stand poor people," which is ignoring the fact that most people are not poor(stinky) by choice but because they were born into poverty(stench). That is all I was saying. But I must admit that ignorant is not the best word in this case. I guess "snobby" fits much better.

AmusedOne, if I did come across as a bit offensive, please forgive me, I did not intend to. However you DO have a lot to learn about tolerance and accepting people as they are. Because sometimes you do NOT have any other choices. A good example would be moving to another country with an entirely different cultural and historical background. Unless you are willing to make some compromises with your high standards of hygiene, I suggest you stay in the States, or you might get some people angry with your "stinky" comments. :)

Oh fsck off. I don't have to do a damn thing. I don't like body odor. It's a personal preference. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with "tolerance." How's about I come to your house smeared in sh!t. How long will I be welcome? It's just my culture you know, why can't you be "tolerant?"
rolleye.gif

And it's not just the poor in other countries. There are wealthy people who happen to live in cultures in which deodorant is not customary, and body odor is considered normal. Hell, as I said bfore much of the world, wealthy or not, doesn't shower at half the frequency Americans do. *I* do not *prefer* to smell body odor. You may, and that is your right, but don't come in here calling me "intolerant" simply because my PERSONAL PREFERENCE is to not smell people's funk. I'm equally put off by bad breath.

And guess what? I AM in the states and plan to STAY in the states. That was the point of my original post... had you read it rather than jumping to ignorant conclusions you might have deduced this.

It seems like I managed to completely hijack this thread. Sorry. And sorry AmusedOne, obviously I did offend you. Won't happen again! ... Actually, it probably will... *GASP* Funny thing is, I do not disagree with you, because I do not like smelling the body odour of other people either, I guess it was the context of your comment that made it a little offensive for me towards Asians etc. Aaargh, living in a multi-cultural environment makes me waaay too sensitive about these issues. I shouldn't be. Especially not on ATOT. Sorry again! :(

And now back to the topic...

Do NOT come to Japan then, well, not to Osaka anyway. Summers here are close to unbearable. The monsoon kicks in around June-July, and suddenly it's so hot and humid that the moment you step out the door from the protection of your air-conditioner, you start sweating like a pig. I usually take three showers a day in the summer. It's almost like being in a sauna, except it goes on all day and the air stinks because of all the pollution. Yech. WHAT AM I DOING HERE?

Hey, that's cool. And to be honest, Asians weren't even on my mind when I made my first comment about stinky people.
