I dunno, I think Germany would be cool to live in. My second choice would be England, then Norway.

But you're not Japanese. If them being openly racist does'nt bother you It's a very clean country.

Have any of you been to Japan? A good friend of mine went there on an exchange program (he's white by the way) and he said they treated him like a king. They gave him presents and held banquets in his honor....he even met some high up official. Man, ever since he's told me about his trip, i've been wanting to go to Japan sooooooooo bad

I can't decide...

I'd probably roam Europe with frequent visits to East asia and some tropical islands.

Canada and the US? Nah, europe seems like the place for me...

I'd move to the Big Island of Hawaii. Find a place near Kona if I wanted to be next to the beach or Waimea if I wanted to be near the mountains, or the Waipio Valley if I wanted some breath-taking views and wanted the beach. Matter of fact, the next million that comes my way, my wife and I are doing exactly that. Now where did I put that million dollar check from Ed McMahon?

Why? You ever been to New Orleans? It's great. Plus I'm from the area.

And it's nice and humid.

I would take a trip to Alaska and Canada though. I've heard they're beautiful!

Nah, I lived there for 3 years. I still live in Louisiana, though, so I go down there a lot. Don't get me wrong, I love New Orleans, but I guess after you've lived there, i dunno. It's a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there...again. Which part are you from?

And it's nice and humid.?????

It's just plain hot.

Rain

what else do you need to do?
a) buy $200,000 house
b) buy 2 vehicles @ ~$25,000 a piece
c) invest the remaining $750,000 in a money market fund or something where you're generating enough interest to pay taxes and live off of...

I would probably move to Bali. I went there a few summers ago and it was unreal. Great beaches, relaxing atmosphere, safety, etc.

Because no matter how expenisive it may be to live here, we have everything I need right here, along with some of the highest standards of living. Oh, and I can't stand stinky people. The majority of the world doesn't have the US customs of hygiene.

wow... that's like THE most ignorant thing i've ever heard...

More like the port side :)

But generally I agree. Aren't we our own country anyway? I mean we have the fifth-largest economy, right???????

I think the fifth largest economy stuff is more than likely smoke, Scipionix, and what you call port is where the world is headed. It's that hundred monkey thing.

Klassy, New Zeland sounds nice, but it's way too cold there in the summer time for me. :D

I would have to go with the Thailand idea also. Although the European countries are great, I'm not sure I could stretch a million dollars and the recurring interest over a lifetime. I'm positive I could put the million in interest-bearing accounts here in the States and draw the money out of ATMs as needed for an indefinite period in Thailand. That's just about what you'd have to do - you can't just up and move to plenty of countries due to their own restrictions.

I'm sure it would be the same old thing day after day - I'd hang out down in Pattaya and drink my days away and occasionally make my way over to the airport in Sattahip to pay some guy to extend my visa. I wouldn't say it's a lawless land. The laws just aren't followed. Any new law is just some policeman's new extortion opportunity anyway.

I'd die a miserable death and would be very sorry that I had wasted my life. My last dying act would be to pass my magic ATM card on to whoever had been my most loyal, faithful hooker.

MB - and because of the farting sheep in NZ we can't light fires to keep warm... ;)

I must admit, even though its not cold where I come from in NZ, I will miss Bay Area weather.

But you're not Japanese. If them being openly racist does'nt bother you It's a very clean country.

Have you ever actually lived in Japan? Just asking because you are making a pretty blatant blanket statement there. Sure, Japanese are racist, but not much more so than Americans OR Germans OR Hungarians. I mean, I know there is some pretty outrageous stuff going on here (like 2nd or 3rd generation Koreans still being considered aliens), but hey, it really only has been 50 years since the world war. Considering how long Japanese people live (Japan is among the top five countries for average life expectancy), it is not surprising to see that some of the old hatred still lives on. If I were to talk about racism, I would bring up my very own country as an example before pointing fingers at someone else's. 5 per cent of our population is made up of Gypsies, who have to face discrimination in every area of their lives. Or take Germany, for example, where foreign-looking people are often (well, often enough to make the news) targets of physical abuse. OR how about the good ol' States where not so long ago black people were considered inferior in many parts of the country, and even now there is so much tension between people of different colour that you can get beat up/killed for looking at someone funny?

I know that the States has come a long way since the days of slavery, but consider how young the country is and how rapidly it has evolved from a colony to superpower. A young culture welcomes change, it thrives on it, whereas Japan, a country of thousands of years of history and tradition, will move along at a much slower pace. This might sound a little rough, cruel even, but the older generations have to die out here before radical changes can be made. Yes, old people most likely still despise Koreans and some of them (I actually met one or two) probably consider all foreigners criminals, but these will be the same people whose neighbours might have been flying kamikaze airplanes to a glorious death. You know just as well as I do that after a certain age it is pretty hard to change one's way of thinking. If you talk to young Japanese people, you will be hard-pressed to find any hint of racial bias, and even if you do, I still think that you cannot blame them for being affected by the hatred of their ancestors. Give this country some time and they will shake off all the remains of the old nationalist empire. Changes happen slowly here, but they do happen eventually.

Living in Japan certainly has its disadvantages, and yes, it is tough to be a foreigner here, not many people end up settling down in Japan for good, but for some it is worth it. And you never know, you could be one of them.

Anyways, sorry about that little rant. I feel a little overprotective when I hear people bashing Japan. I like this place, and I like these people. (Oh, yeah, in case you have not figured it out yet, I live in Japan.)

My wife is also from Australia, small world.

I'd choose Australia because the US currency is so strong against the Aussie dollar, the people are friendly, things are reasonably priced (I could kiss all the Hot Deals good bye though), housing is affordable and the quality of life is good. I'd just invest most of the money and travel the continent then become a beach bum.

It's just plain hot.

I was born in Baton Rouge, and have lived in Slidell. I've spent most of my life in Biloxi, MS. I've also lived about 4 years just north of Shreveport.

I love the heat and humidity. I live in Indiana now, and they complain about it ;)

I'll get mine in winter though. They said in 1978 it got down to -30, and they had to have the national guard bring one of our employees to work to get the station back on. Another guy was snowed in for 4 days.
