Why use codecs at all?

Just install VLC and/or PotPlayer.

I've yet to see these two failing to open a video file, no matter what strange format/codec it had...

I ditto completely. VLC is in a class by itself and would be even without the Santa hat at Xmas.

It renders codecs moot.

yeah sure use VLC it plays anything you throw at it with no codecs. Only, it's for n00bs who know nothing about quality.

If you compare the quality of LAV Decoder with the madVR Renderer it will crap all over VLC, now add SVP to that, and you will feel the movie like REAL life not a movie! you'd wanna re-watch all your movies again.

Ever since I discovered SVP I stopped going to the cinema, because watching movies on my big TV connected to my laptop via HDMI and running SVP is like being there in the scene

Never heard of that, I will delve. Cept I play movies on stand alone player on the TV, not via my PCs. Same deal at my BF's.

that's the problem, most people just want a headache free easy to install VLC, let me install MPC-BE + LAV +madVR + SVP and you will blown away

if you need help, I can assist you via TeamViewer, otherwise google the stuff but to get it working right is the difficult part, once I show you how, it will take you no longer than 120 seconds to install and configure everything

Watching 1080p on your tv is better than the digital 4K at the theater? Or are you rocking 4K at your house with a sound system that's THX certified (or something close to that)?

The way you describe it, I have a hard time believing. You either really do care about quality and are terrible at quantifying, or you think you care about quality but really don't as your discernment threshold was surpassed a long time ago.

Thanks much for the offer, I am convinced you would be the go to human for this......but again, we watch movies on stand alone players on big TVs.....no puters involved.():)

well the Audio is better at the theater yes obviously, but the smooth FPS @ 60 FPS, the crystal clear quality of a 1080 p movie with madVR, makes it all so much better, the movies don't even compare, if you look close in the movie theater you can see the little color dots or pixels or whatever you wanna call em

did you even try the combo I mentioned before you judge?

We are each unique. I submit, I can harvest the in depth reality of a given movie without focusing on, obsessing over the arcane tech elements.

The first time I tested SVP, it was on The Fast & THe Furious and oh my god was I blown away! I felt like the car motion and races were real! I had to re-watch most my movies again! Until you experience it, no words I say can make believe :whiste:

I believe U. But, I also stand by what I shared for me. We chose to see Gravity on the big screen, mainly cause the 3D matters in that film re the depth of space, not gratuitous gimmick as it is so often.

Also know, since becoming a fan of TCM, my interest in silent movies was born and grew; I already had tons of stuff from the 30s, 40s and on in my library (only the best editions with the bonus material). For me, genius is never in the high end technical stuff, unless cutting edge technical stuff is key in potentiating the essence of a film, as per Gravity.

I use K-Lite Mega, and have been using the same for past three/four years. My favourite player is MPC. I have tried a few, BS, Gom or something, VLC, and no disrespect to anyone but found VLC the worst of them all, regardless of it's variety of codec support!

very well said. VLC is the worst player in terms of quality IMHO. The sad thing is people who don't wanna bother with fiddling with settings just install it and forget about codecs. True it is more convenient to not need codecs and what not, but they don't know what they're missing

VLC = Garbage even when you enable the buggy hardware acceleration option.

PS: are you from India man?

So, I found the following tutorials on how to install "MPC-HC + LAV Filters + xy-VSFilter + madVR"

http://azurehakua.wordpress.com/2012/02/23/mpc-hc-lav-filters-xy-vsfilter-madvr/

I also found this, which seems to be a slightly different configuration:

http://www.reddit.com/r/software/comments/1kzz1q/mpcbe_with_madvr_better_upscaling_quality_than/

Anything else?

In my experience, installing codec packs and futzing with system settings leads to instability most of the times. However, I am willing to try installing these alleged "superior" packages on a test machine, and make a direct comparison between the VLC and the MPC+filters solutions.

If a director shoots a film at 24 fps, I wouldn't consider watching it at 60 fps to be improving the situation.

I can't comment on actual picture quality.

But this just sounds like more and more like pc game mods where a fan decides they know better than the developer how a game should have looked or played. I avoid those like the plague.

If I had an HTPC I'd look into it.

please, before you try SVP and experience it's magic, do not judge

your theory sounds right, but the result of SVP and how it works make every video even old ones look so realistic with superb quality

Instability by installing codec pack? I don't think you have experienced it, but heard it from VLC users only :p no offence, again.
I have never seen or experienced any system 'instability', at least none in past six years!
VLC died for me on the installation day, when after watching the same movie in MPC, and then in VLC, told me how much a 5.1 DTS audio track could suck, never realized that before that day ():)

Speaking of Codecs: What is the filename of the codec used for AAC/AAC+ does anyone know??

I wanna try placing it in my system directory and see if WMP will then play AAC streams!! (Right now only VLC and Screamer player will play them)

Umm, not going into English and all that, it is my third lang anyway, but I think I can use the word 'the same' instead of 'it'. Neither seems wrong to me :)
None taken anyway bro. However you might wanna remove the 's' from offence :)
