What can Apple do to get its sexy label back?

2011 was Samsung's year, and I guess Jobs' death overshadowed things for them (in addition to the 4S just being a minor update).

Apple needs to release a major new iPhone, to take some shine off of Samsung. And no measly upgrade, but a lock, stock and barrel movement up.

Apple needs to do nothing, at the moment they have 3 handsets on the market, and they're currently the top 3 selling ones. And without numbers I would only imagine the iPod Touch is by far the #1 selling PMP. I don't really think they could even improve anything if they tried. Apple's still has the sexiest by far phone on the market imho. Samsung's phones look pretty nice indeed, but they feel like toys in my hand. I'm not a fan of plastic phones, but that's just me.

Why should Apple want sexy when they have mainstream instead? Apple needs your grandparents' interest more than yours, and they've got it.

I kind of disagree. People will probably keep buying iPhones for a variety of reasons and they'll continue to make money, but I'd like to see them really push it in terms of design instead of just gradual changes.

I like both (plastic, glass, metal). I like the shape of my Nexus, can't really imagine it being improved by the use of glass and metal.

They should make an "iphone pro" with a larger screen and beefier specs for enterprise and prosumers.

What makes you think that 2011 was Samsung's year? Did they become the most valuable company in the world? Did Apple's stock go down in 2011? Does Samsung have the top selling phone in the US?

I think you are buying into the commercials a little too much.

Didn't Apply just have a record breaking profit in 4th Quarter 2011 and over 50% total handsets sold with sprint and Verizon in 2011. What am I missing that make 2011 Samsung's year.

Apple didn't have a Super Bowl commercial, but check out the Giants players and staff whipping out their phones during the Super Bowl trophy presentation. You can't buy this type of endorsement:

From a tech standpoint the Galaxy S2/Nexus line is a more compelling product than the iPhone. I think it noteworthy to see that Android is becoming more and more of a quality offering with much more functionality than iOS, and coupled with the underwhelming iPhone 4S, which is still a great device but wasn't up to people's expectations of an iPhone 5. Since HTC kind of fell off the wagon, Motorola having a bad rep with Motoblur, LG being regarded as a copycat, and a new version of Touchwiz, arguably Samsung probably had the best Android phones of 2011.

Yeah, sales of the 4S really suffered from being underwhelming, right?

Apple advertised a lot throughout the Super Bowl.
Every time you saw a tablet it was an iPad.
Every time you saw a phone it was an iPhone.
Hell, when they advertised the Super Bowl App they showed a picture of an iPhone and an iPad and said look in the App store.

Apple advertised by having the #1 tablet and the #1 phone on the market.
Apple advertised by having the most ubiquitous products on the planet.

Apple advertised by letting other people advertise for them.
They can do this because they are #1.

Ya. The #1 selling phone on the planet catapulting Apple to being the most valuable company on the planet. Those are some pretty underwhelming sales. LOL.

I never said the sales were underwhelming. But come on, everyone was expecting a 4" screen, curved glass, etc basically a major redesign of the iphone which ended up being more of an incremental upgrade.

Too late. May as well stop posting. 😛

Okay, my only question is how much ink do these little suckers hold, especially for my Canon BCI-21 cartridges. A few drops for $1.70 or so just doesn't cut it ... gonna email them and ask. Did you use their toner or inkjet cartridges?

The iPhone is definitely not sexy any more. The tiny screen doesn't look good at all. Too much wasted space.

And we obviously know that everyone bought an iPhone because it is technically superior to anything else on the market.:sneaky:

Is this thread about the technical difference between the iPhone and Samsung phones, why people buy iPhones or, perhaps, something else?

Let me check the OP.

Yep, something else.

I just don't really understand 4S hate. Everything I heard around the time the 4S came out was how disappointing it was and how Samsung was really pushing the envelope forward with the GS2.

I mean, look at these:

Are these phones really that different? One has more rounded curves and dropped some of the chrome trim. I consider myself fairly techie, but if someone asked me on the street prior to me looking for a good image to use as a comparison, I probably wouldn't know the difference between a stock Galaxy S and a stock Galaxy S II. How did Samsung innovate? With the hardware.

Dual-Core CPU. Upgraded GPU. More RAM! More WiFi's! Better camera!

Apple did all of that. Not only that, but the iPhone 4S is just about the fastest phone on the market. The RAZR and Galaxy Nexus beat it in browsing test by very, very slim margins and the GPU is tops in the market by leaps and bounds.

It's been said in the thread. Apple doesn't have to do anything. As long as people keep buying from iTunes and the App Store, Apple will be happy. Heck, I'd even say that Apple doesn't even need to release a phone next year.

Companies exist to make money. Apple is doing this very well.
