Who's specifically talking about the iPhone 5? Not me.

No, he was being as dismissive as you were, so I repeated my reply.

And I still am being dismissive

Apple was never sexy.
Thats just their bullshit marketing image. When they started selling to the average fat ass American they couldnt even hold on to that any more.

So, the sales numbers and profits are from thin air?

The iP4S, iP4, and iP3GS aren't the best selling phones in the US?

See, this is the kind of stupid shit I hate, all opinion, no facts, and once again, the subculture or a subculture here thinks something should be, so it becomes a "fact" or self reinforcing trueism.

If I believed the trueisms here, I'd be a hell of a lot poorer right now. As it is, I've made many of you-all's annual salary in Apple stock this year already. LOL,as I was typing, Apple jumped up nearly 10 points on the open, and I'm up >$7K

But yeah, Apple could sell polished turds, and Apple can't even sell it's products to fat assed US citizens (curious comment, coming from you...)

Is that why the Samsung commercials all have average fat ass American's in them?

Even Samsung admits that Apple products are sexy and are popular with the young, attractive and hip "barista" crowd - that is who they portray as Apple users in their commercials!

Quite a few people saying things like "Apple doesn't even need to release a phone, they'll still make tons of money." That most definitely is true, but... that doesn't do anything for us, the consumers. Why is it "enough" that Apple makes a lot of money? That's only great for two people: Apple shareholders and Apple fanboys. They don't pass those record profits onto us, so I don't get why it's used as an argument here at AT of all places. This is a tech enthusiast forum, not a money enthusiast forum...

I don't give a crap how much money Apple, Samsung, Moto, HTC, etc. are making. All I care about is that they continue to innovate on the hardware and software fronts. I don't see the fault in yearning for that progression of technology. I would like to see the Next iPhone have a larger screen, higher res, and LTE at the very least.

the fact that they make money by the truck full means they can support their products for 2 years or more unlike the competition.

my 4S will get it's last iOS upgrade in 2013. if i were to buy it without a contract that means that i could have bought it in 2011 and the way app support is these days it would last me until 2014 or 2015.

with android unless you buy a nexus device you get one year of updates and apps if you're lucky because the manufacturers are barely breaking even

laptops, 2010 Macbooks are getting EFI updates so you can install Lion over the internet. and last i read that means a free OS upgrade. How long do HP, Lenovo and Dell support their products with new features?

Because the premise of this thread in the OP has to do with the success of Apple vs. Samsung.

A discussion of other matters is for another thread.

No one, but I brought up the iPhone5 as an example of how an unreleased product is popular.

Apple was never sexy.

To be fair, the average American is fat.

Looks to me like the OP was simply asking for more than a standard internal spec bump with the next iPhone.

All I know in the "Samsung vs Apple" argument, is that people I know with iPhone 4 and 4s at my work say things like "I wish my phone did that (re: widgets/LWPs)" and "F the iPhone4, I want one of these!".

I will admit that iPad2 and iPhone4s are way way better for gaming, though. Those two devices get the best games first.

Yes. I thought we were in for interesting discussion (especially since my wife is an iPhone user) that got derailed by a meaningless phrase (Samsung's year or whatever).

Once Apple does something, there's no reason why others couldn't follow suit. Maybe no bezel? Or sort of like the Nexus but more extreme (no side bezel, just room at the top and bottom for speaker, microphone). Something to clean up notifications (when I see my wife's, it looks like a mess). Or, now that they've captured and held on to the mainstream, are they going to settle into minor changes and revisions?

I think that Apple products are still plenty "sexy"... but some of the Android phone competitors are now faster (both network wise and processor wise) and have better screens. That doesn't make them more "sexy" though... Apple still has the market cornered on that. :)

For me to switch back to an iPhone, though, Apple needs to offer a LTE 4G model with a 4 inch screen, while still offering good battery life. Until then, that Galaxy Nexus is looking mighty tempting.

By the way: Pliablemoose's Gordon Gecko quote is awesome :)

That's the most arrogant statement made in the tech forums, of all places and you just love repeating it. Save that condescending tone for your high school reunion, it's rather sad on the internet. Betting serious money on Apple was a wise move financially but blasting people with arrogance on the internet, not at all.

To the OP: I totally disagree, Apple didn't lose sexy, they took it to the mainstream where it's most profitable. IOS devices maintain their appeal of rare luxury devices despite the quantity on the market. It's a testament to their success that they pretty much can't do wrong, even if Apple deliberately tried to sabotage their own stuff now, it would take them 5 years to lose all the momentum they gained.

I think there's almost enough evidence now to say that Apple expects a two-year life cycle out of its products. A form factor change with similar internals to the previous years device and then a spec bump in the same shell. Almost like Intel's Tick-Tock pattern.

Whitney Houston is pretty high profile right now. Maybe Apple should try the same tactic...

Apple went from being an innovator and helping drive the direction of technology to doing their best to stifle it. I'd like to see them put back in their place.

Well, being in LA that'll be enough to get you 3 gallons of gasoline and a value meal at McDonalds.

Toyota Camry is best selling car in America but there's nothing sexy about it. Apple is doing a lot of things right but as a tech savvy consumer, I would like them to give more choices in the future. Apple used to just have 1 ipod, now they have nano, shuffle, touch, etc. I think they should make different iterations on their phone, cheaper iphone's could be the older ones (3GS), regular iphone and maybe one that is a premium iphone and carries a large beautiful screen (which would be more appealing to someone like me).

Ok, enough on Pliable's stock portfolio. Please get the thread back on track and away from comments about other users.

zsdersw, as long as you continue to defend your opinion about Apple and turds in a rational way, I'll leave it alone. It is a flammable thing to post, but as moderator I'll let it stand as long as you can explain your thinking.

I didn't say any of their popular items are polished turds, I just said they could release a polished turd version of any of their popular items and people would queue up to buy it, and would rationalize away its turd-ishness.

Yet Apple TV doesn't sell well at all. So I guess they can't release just anything and have people buying it in droves. And I dunno, I'd say ATV was better than a polished turd. So if they can't sell ATV's well, I somehow doubt they could sell a polished turd. They can however sell a lot of an excellent product like the iPhone or MBA. Lord knows if either had been released by Samsung and were Android products they'd get all the praise in the world.

You're not understanding what I'm saying. I said if they put out a turd version of one of their popular products (as in, broad mass-market appeal)... like an iPhone, iPod, or iPad... people would still queue up to buy it. Apple TV is not a popular product.
