Lots of good suggestions in this thread. I have lots of book suggestions to check out.

Just read the entire Matador Series by Steve Perry. Was started in the mid 80's and has a number of books that are all good reads on their own.

Have you tried Evan Currie's Odssey One and Warrior's Wings series?

Actually Steel World is a first in the series. Storm World will be the sequel. Haven't tried the other ones.

Read the first one, thought it was ho hum. It's not bad, but nothing great. I do like some concept ideas he has in the book. Just really dislike the overall character development. The second one I started, but only got a third through before putting it down. It was just getting to "phoney" is the only word I can think of. Way to contrived on forced character motives.

Just got Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson today at the library (second book in Stormlight Archive). It's 1100 pages like the first book (which I read in two days), and I can't wait to start reading.

Only thing that sucks, is a blurb on the back comparing Sanderson to the greats like Tolkien and Moorcock... .and then they say George R.R. Martin. God I can't stand Martin; what a freaking hack that has everyone praising him, which I bet is because of his HBO series, and NOT from reading his books. I've been reading fantasy for 38 years, and Martin's books stink.

Maybe that's the difference. I can't stand fantasy books in general which is probably why I like Martin. I guess if fantasy is your thing then the opposite might be true. I read all of the books before seeing any of the show and I liked them (although I don't think they are the greatest series I have ever read).

I just finished reading Wool (Hugh Howey) thanks to a few mentions here. Very good read.

I'm currently 80% through "Sand" by Howey, and it's really good. It's a new series unrelated to Wool, and a good deal for Kindle owner with Prime (like me) because it's free.

Mistborn series is one of my all time favorites. Outstanding.

I want to read Stormlight archives but get worried that Sanderson won't finish it. Might get hit my a minivan or something.

Nothing, but I finally ordered the Uplift Trilogy a couple days ago, so I'll probably get on that this weekend.

Don't forget the Esselmont books, though I think you have to read at least 3 of Erikson's before the first one of those fits in.

I finished the first Warriors series (6 books), which was really fun. Currently reading A Canticle for Leibowitz which is a classic story about a sect of monks that try to preserve knowledge after a nuclear apocalypse. It won the Hugo award in 1961.

Ancient Shores by Jack McDevitt.

Was on a 'library worker recommends' shelf, and I like sci-fi so gave it a shot. Pretty good and interesting read; I'd say his characters are as strong as any Stephen King character (which says a lot), but the ending was a bit curt.

Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan. This nonfiction book attempts to give us all the facts of the life of the actual person Jesus and the society he lived in, to the extent that is possible. Quite an eye opener to me and fascinating if you are interested in history. Spoiler #1: The jewish leaders come across as quisling scumbags. Spoiler #2: First century Palestine was hardy the pastoral place Sunday school left us with the impression of. Modern day Afghanistan is a better analogy.

None have been great but they are something to read and I have all of them. I know the series turns to crap fairly soon so I'll probably stop or at least take a break when it does.

oooo, i really really liked that book a lot! if you havent already, you might read his book The Engines of God. I thought it was also a good read.

finally finished Mistborn trilogy... i liked it a lot. interesting ending, but it made me want another book about what happened next!

Just finished "The Last Colony" by John Scalzi, the 3rd book in the Old Man's War series. It was a really good series and I got through it too quickly =/
