The Second World War, Antony Beevor.

It's good, but of course a lot big huge events can only be given a few pages. I'm only up to the North African campaign and beginnings of Barbarossa. Curious to see how much he goes over Stalingrad, considering he wrote a whole book (and an excellent one at that) on it previously.

The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes. I had the book and read it in the late 80's but lent the book to a Hungarian engineer I knew at IBM. I recently downloaded the book from Google Play and am about 40% through reading it. When done I'll move on to his followup book Dark Sun.

Simmons is awesome. One part of the Hyperion books (
the electrified plants
) is still up there in the top 5 most horrifying things I've ever read. Besides Hyperion, I also really liked Carrion Comfort and Summer of Night.
Thanks for the suggestions! I've got nice pile of books to read, but, I'll look into Carrion Comfort and Summer of Night after I finish reading everything Hyperion Related :)

The buildup was so amazing that any conclusion would be a let-down.

And it was

And the succeeding books in the series, meh
I've heard that about part 3 and 4, but I'm interested in reading them anyhow. Thanks

Just bought Hyperspace: A Scientific Odyssey Through Parallel Universes, Time Warps, and the 10th Dimension by Michio Kaku. Have not started it yet, but should this week. Sounds pretty fascinating.

Let me open up my Nook...

1. SERIAL KILLERS: THE METHOD AND MADNESS OF MONSTERS.

An excellent book on why serial killers kill.

It seems that the height for being a serial killer was 1970s to mid 1980s.

A Dance with Dragons

It's so fucking boring just like AFFC. I'm about a quarter to third way through. Dany is just jerking off in her throne room doing nothing and letting people who threaten her walk away.

I prefer reading, but I'm actually alternating between reading and listening to the audiobook at bedtime. It helps me fall asleep.

I read something recently about how Martin has a plan (to likely suggest to the producers) to stretch out the TV show so the show doesn't overtake the book series. It's something like like 3 seasons for AFFC and ADWD, or a prequel season, or a hiatus, but that's bullshit. I doubt the producers would keep that much filler or else the show would jump the shark.

Supposedly the next two books are 1500 pages each... maybe Martin changes his mind and makes the series 8 books long. Or maybe he dies before he finishes.

In hindsight, I probably should have stopped reading after the 3rd book. Still not sure if I should give up on the 5th book.

Yeah, I thought book 5 was the least exciting to read. I've read it twice but it could easily have been cut by 200 pages.

Memories of Ice, book 3 of the Malazan Series by Steven Erikson.

So far I really like this series.

I found book 1 really hard to read at first. They throw so many characters at you with really strange names, and all sorts of crap about magic. If you power through it, book two gets really good, and then book 3 is better yet.

This is probably my favorite series ever.

YMMV I love Dr Sleep. (3/4 done)
I also was very moved by the 11/22/63

Tee Jay

11/22/63 is the best Stephen King book in quite a while (IMHO).

I liked Dr. Sleep, but I can see where a lot of things in there would not make as much sense if "The Shining" has not been read previous to it.

I'm still planning to read this but I'm holding out for the rumored high-DPI Kindle first.

Currently I'm reading the Warriors series (the original 6 books). It's a fun juvenile fantasy series where all the characters are cats. I'll try to get my daughter to read it at some point, I think she would enjoy it.

Ender's game. Outstanding read so far. Surprised at how well O.S. Card managed to predict in 1985 what computer systems/sims/games would be capable of now, almost 30 years later.

If she/you likes Warriors she may also like Redwall series.

Good to hear. The last King novel i liked was under the dome.

I'm just about finished reading it and already have Dark Sun on my tablet.

It would be hard for Dark Sun to live up to The Making of the Atomic Bomb, but I am interested in the science and history and his first book only touched on the Super.

After Dark Sun I have HG Wells The Shape of Things to Come which for tells the abomb.

Had last finished Words of Radiance a couple of weeks ago almost. Well 2 days after release.

Found the book no where near as good as the first. Actually found it a bit below average really compared to the first which I really liked.

Read a few more junky books as well after that. Powered through 3 books by BV Larson: Dead Sun, Steel World, and Mech Zero. Those were all recent releases to series I had started. They are decent enough, just not great works. Currently junky sci fi crap piece is Gehenna Dawn. This is really below average for a work. Powering through it just because I was stupid enough to buy it from barnes and nobles recommendations for me and the decent reviews it got.

I have a few more lined in the queue. but I think I'll slow it down some so I can read them on my trip next week.

Steel World is a stand alone book . . .

Have you tried Evan Currie's Odssey One and Warrior's Wings series?

Just got Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson today at the library (second book in Stormlight Archive). It's 1100 pages like the first book (which I read in two days), and I can't wait to start reading.

Only thing that sucks, is a blurb on the back comparing Sanderson to the greats like Tolkien and Moorcock... .and then they say George R.R. Martin. God I can't stand Martin; what a freaking hack that has everyone praising him, which I bet is because of his HBO series, and NOT from reading his books. I've been reading fantasy for 38 years, and Martin's books stink.
