A Deepness in the Sky by Verner Vinge. I don't read a whole lot of sci-fi, but this book is excellent.

I'm currently reading the last of Jack L Chalker's Well World novels, Ghost of the Well of Souls. It's the sequel to The Sea is Full of Stars, and it took the series in a totally different direction by leaving out Mavra Chang and Nathan Brazil.

I really like Chalker, though his themes do get a little repetitive after reading enough of his stuff. I highly recommend the Soul Rider (Flux & Anchor) series if you haven't read it already.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to read that many Xanth novels. The first 6 are really good, but it really goes downhill/gets old after that. I think I quit after 10 or so.

Did you read the first book, A Fire Upon the Deep? IMHO it's one of the best SF novels ever written.

Yep, read those, though it's been a long time (decades?). I should read them again...

My favorite series by him, oddly enough, is the Changewinds trilogy. It starts out extremely weak, but once it gets rolling, it really gets rolling and has some great ideas.

I loved this series. one of my favorite ever.

Same here. I'm pretty excited that the final book of the Last Chronicles will be released in October. I haven't read any of them yet, but I will definitely do it then. Donaldson is in my top 5 authors list and has never let me down.

I read those but I can't remember anything. I guess I should reread. I also really like his Rings of the Master series.

Finished reading Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, now starting the Domination (Draka) trilogy by SM Stirling. This starts as an alternate history novel in World War 2, where an empire based out of South Africa has become a world power alongside the US and Germany.

Starts as alternate history but ends as SF - pretty cool. Also, the fact that much of the story is from the point of view of Domination characters, even though their society is monstrous, creates an interesting tension. Definitely recommended. Also read the 4th book, Drakon.

Now starting Little Brother by Cory Doctorow.

Now starting Little Brother by Cory Doctorow.

I couldn't put this down. It's a great piece of fiction that's all about the erosion of our civil liberties in the age of "The War on Terror." It was so powerful I was walking around angry just because what was happening in the novel was frighteningly plausible, when it shouldn't have been. It's not perfect - there are a few too many layman's explanations of technology, but READ IT!

I just bought the new sequel from this year, Homeland.

last night i read "the secret history of the american empire" by john perkins, the guy who wrote confessions of an economic hit man. the night before i read "some girls" about an american chick who was a whore in a brunei prince's harem. normally i dont read crap like that but i found it in the lounge and once i start something i usually finish it. tonight ill probably read a book i bought this morning called "broken markets," i didnt look at it that closely cuz i was in a hurry when i selected it, so im not endorsing it. tomorrow night ill read maeve binchys last book, a week in winter
