Just finished "A Rumor of War" by Philip Caputo. Great book. Caputo's writing really appeals to me, and I found it to be more like prose/literature than just a nonfiction book full of facts and figures. I've read a lot of war books (mainly about Vietnam and WWII) and found this one to be my favorite read thus far.
Hmmm, might have to check that one out at some point.

Rereading ASOIAF at the moment. I started it while waiting for A memory of light to hit ebooks.

Then I need to find something new to read. I'm a fan of huge series' of books. I had reading new stuff, I get too invested in the characters I am reading about.

Read a couple others I really enjoyed. "Detroit: An American Autopsy" by Charlie LeDuff. Another book I found to have a writing style that appeals to me. I don't live in Detroit (never been there actually) but still found it very engaging and full of incredible information. It's written like a story, but covers a lot about the city, the history, some politics, some current events, all wrapped around his personal story. Great book.

Also "How I Slept My Way to the Middle" by Kevin Pollak. I'm not a huge Pollak fan, but am now. Really fun book to read and if you know even a tiny bit about him and have seen some of his comedy, acting or impressions the book reads really easily. I'm not much of a "laugh out loud" type of person when reading a book, but I did several times while reading this. Check it out.

It's an older book, so should be able to be found on the cheap. Published first in 1977 actually.

Well, I finally finished The Sword of Shannara, and then flew through The Elfstones of Shannara and am now starting The Wishsong of Shannara. I liked the first two a lot, although I found the second one a bit predictable. After Wishsong is finished, I'm not sure if I want to read more of the related books, or move on to some other books I have. I am leaning toward reading a little of something else for a bit. Maybe Son of Sedonia.

I recommend stopping after Wishsong - even it was a bit weak compared to the first two. From what I've heard the later stuff is pretty derivative, but I admit I haven't read anything past Wishsong.

If you are looking for a huge series, I recommend any of the following if you haven't read them already:

Honor Harrington
Vorkosigan
Malazan Book of the Fallen (disclaimer: this one is still on my to-read list)

All of these have "spinoff" books to a greater or lesser extent, so you can make your read even bigger than the mainline series if you choose.

Again, that's secondhand, so take it with a grain of salt. If it's true, Brooks has a similar problem to Eddings - The Belgariad is great fun and I highly recommend it, but The Mallorean is like the same damn thing over again (I did read both of those).

I couldn't put this down. It's a great piece of fiction that's all about the erosion of our civil liberties in the age of "The War on Terror." It was so powerful I was walking around angry just because what was happening in the novel was frighteningly plausible, when it shouldn't have been. It's not perfect - there are a few too many layman's explanations of technology, but READ IT!

I just bought the new sequel from this year, Homeland.

Finished Homeland - decent but not as good as Little Brother. I'm now reading Pushing Ice by Alastair Reynolds. I love Reynolds' Revelation Space books, but this one isn't from that universe.

Slightly off topic, but here's a book hot deal for you. You can get Hugh Howey's amazing Wool series for $4 today - that's $2 for the Wool omnibus and $2 for the Shift omnibus.

Wool Omnibus

Shift Omnibus

For those not familiar with Wool, it's a post-apocalyptic story about a group of people living in an underground silo. Shift is the prequel trilogy for Wool, however it merges back into the main storyline at the end. I can't wait for Dust, the next volume.

Dirty Wars by Jeremy Scahill - how the US made assassination a major part of foreign policy. Great so far.

Finished Pushing Ice, which was quite good - in fact I'd love to see a sequel to that. I'm now starting the Vlad Taltos series. I'm about 100 pages into Jhereg and so far I'm extremely impressed. There's some fantastic world-building going on here, as well as some great action and political intrigue.

I finished that yesterday, very good book. I'm going to start "The Way of the Knife" next. Its essentially about the same thing but I'm curious to see how Mazzetti and Scahill portray things differently.

I just finished reading all the books in the Dresden files series, which I would recommend to anyone. Kinda like Die Hard in the form of a fantasy novel (the original Die Hard that is, not all the crappy sequels).

Right now I'm reading the Codex Alera series by the same author, and while they're ok, they are just not as good as the Dresden files.

Oh and to answer the previous poster, yes I read Name of the Wind, Wise Mans Fears, and the Painted Man series. All pretty decent, though not in my top 10 for fantasy novels.

Also I'm still struggling to get through the final book of the Wheel of Times. It's not very good, but I read the other 13 books, and I really should find out how it ends. Realistically though, that series should have ended a whole lot sooner. The series was pretty good up until book 6 or so, but after that it just feels like the authors are dragging it out to make more money.

I made it through. Just have to read the last one and I'm done. I get attached to characters and don't want to read about anything but them. It's been a sad existence for me, but I read the hobbit, lord of the rings, star wars novels on repeat for like 15 years before I started trying other things.
