What are you going to with your HD DVD player?

So to those who jumped the gun early--myself included with the Toshiba AC3 player--what are you going to do with your precious players now that it's essentially antiquated?

Personally I'll probably keep it for a while until Blu Ray players get reasonably cheap, and use it to play my regular DVDs w/ upconversion capabilities..

how is it any more antiquated thatn a standard DVD player? in fact, it is better than a standard dvd player since most do a great job of upconverting a regular dvd.

jesus, you people overreact to everything.

I'm keeping it. I've got 35movies to watch on it. Besides I will continue to rent HD DVDs until I can no longer do so. People are probably going to be desperate do get rid their movies so if I see some cheap ~$5 I will probably buy some more.

As far as Blu-ray goes, well I already have a player + 17 movies.

agreed. people act like it will just suddenly stop working and all of their HD DVDs will be completely worthless. My dad uses his A2 to play standard DVDs all the time.

I was going to buy one dirt cheap to rent HD-DVDs from Netflix, glad I never got around to that.

They still make good upscaling DVD players for current owners, but the $100 is better put towards a PS3 than buying one now.

I've got 10 free movies coming in the mail (HD-A2 + XBOX HD-DVD), Heroes Season 1 on HD-DVD, The Matrix Trilogy ($20, Circuit City price mistake), and I'll be the first in line to get the HD-DVDs out of the bargain bin. I don't see why this has to be a bad thing at all; if I really start longing for some BluRay I'll just get a PS3 at a good deal, you can walk away with a 40GB for $280 if you know what you're doing.

is HD-DVD offically dead, or it just still rumors? I know it might not make it much longer. But I've yet to see a press release from Toshiba saying it's RIP.

I'll keep it as long as needed for upconverting DVDs.
I'll probably buy a Playstation for Blu Ray within the next 6 months.

I don't have an HD DVD player, and I'm not planning on picking up a Blu Ray drive until they're under $150 or if I really need it. I get all my HD stuff via the internet anyway, so I don't really need a player. I love how a lot of podcasts, especially revision3's, come in HD formats now.

keep it. its the a2 from the wal-mart sale and ive already gotten my free movies plus bourne ultimatum and oceans 13 on it (b1g1 free awhile back, both are combo discs). so in total ive sunk about $130 into it for hd-dvd playback, dvd upscaling and 7 movies (2 of which can be played on my ps3).

If Microsoft announces a BR add-on, I will go with that. If not, as soon as the PS3 hits $299 I'll get one. I'll then put my A2 in the bedroom.

I can't wait until the HD-DVD fire sale though. It's not like the discs are going to stop working. :p I have 13 HD-DVDs (Planet Earth included), but I've only spent about a total of $175 on them.

The only thing that sucks though is I paid about $270 for my A2 last June. Oh well.

I don't have a HD DVD player but I still have working VCRs, audio cassette tape decks, a turntable and an 8-track player.

If I had a HD DVD player, I'd use it to watch whatever media I had for it AND also as an upconverting DVD player. BTW, how do the best upconverting DVD players rate against ffdshow's vast processing/resize abilities? I'm guessing ffdshow ought to be better.

Never had one since I don't even have an HDTV; chose to get a monitor instead. However, I got PS3 recently so you could consider me in the Blu-ray camp. Still, I do not plan on getting any BD discs until they come down in price to $30 or less and I get an HDTV. Oh, and until I get a BD layer. My PS3's BD has already died once within a month of purchase, no way I'm going to put "unnecessary" wear (not gaming) on it.

(1) Keep it to use as an upconverter for SD-DVD's and to play the 23 HD-DVD movies I own now ... I may even buy another player & some more movies when they are available at firesale prices.

(2) Already have an 80gb PS3. (poll needs an option for "already have BRD player")

jesus, you people overreact to everything.

That may be true and all, but the *main* reason people bought an HD DVD player, is in order to play newly released DVDs in high definition. But since there aren't going to be any more newly released HD-DVDs being made in the near future--and it'll be harder to get them--it essentially eliminates a major feature of that player in terms of longevity.

Regardless of how you look at it, the past few weeks have not been good news for HD-DVD owners..

Lots of hd content out there and will be cheaper than it is right now so I'll be happy for quite awhile.

Blu ray may have won the battle but not the war...better technology will be coming out to supplant it in the near future. BD is too expensive making it not suitable for wider usage. Until a $150 hd player comes out, I'll be in the side line. PS3 has no killer games so I'm sticking to my 360 console.

cd--->dvd--->bluray--->something better and cheaper:)

J&R has a couple hundred titles under $30:

DVD players, burners, and discs used to be outrageously expensive as well. Now you can get players and burners for $20. Prices will come down very quickly in the next year.

If you got in for $129 or less, you got a fantastic deal on (if nothing else) a superb upconverting DVD player.

There's no reason to go apeshit dumping them. In fact, you should be able to build a hell of an HD DVD library. Many places are having "fire sales" on titles already.

Im off-loading mine right away (listed now). Luckily I got just about everything for cheap, so I won't lose much if anything. I have had bluray since last year.
