How old is your kid?

Since they revamped the standard deduction and took away additional deductions for kids - it's now based on the Child Tax Credit anyhow.

My understanding based on some quick reads is that the child tax credit of $2000 is only applicable to kids 18 and younger. Thus when your kid turns 19+ then you will only be eligible for a $500 "standard dependent" credit.

Once down to $500 credit, I would almost think filing their own tax return at that point would lead to more substantial difference than that measly $500 credit.
That is something to consider but for 2019, mine only made $2500 or so and paid $150 in fed. This years summer job, assuming we're not dead, is $15/hr so....

Yeah, I'm thinking of things like the tax credit for 401k contributions and other "low income" based credits/deductions.

Form 8880: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8880.pdf

So just contributing $1000 to a 401k/retirement plan while making under $20k will net you a tax credit of $500... and that's just 1 that I can think of on the fly.

Yeah, that's correct, he turned 17 in December, that's why it didn't feel good.
And of course, in this stupid state, you can't actually rent a place of your own until you're 19.

Yet, the 'Age of Majority' is still 18, no? So in that state, parent can kick their kids out of the home at 18, and legally, they either have to be homeless, or move to another state, until they turn 19? WTF?

Does your state have "roving bands of feral teenagers?"

Lambos are so '80s. In future post COVID apocalyptic world, Tesla Cybertruck will be the vehicle of choice for most Americans. Built in America at new Gigafactory in Texas.

And they laughed at Elon Musk when he added a Biohazard Defense mode!

Inyet you can vote to decide things at 16 lol.

I've mostly heard of them living unofficially with someone else (IE, roommate that isn't on the lease), and I'm not 100% on whether we're allowed to kick them out. Most of us live pretty near the Iowa border... maybe this is part of why Council Bluffs, IA is such a terrible city, all our cast-off eighteen-year-olds are crashing there!

This thread is reminding me of the post-Katrina situation in which thousands of dollars were being thrown at "victims' who went out and bought 'bling' instead of basic necessities and then laughed at everyone giving them money. After that 2005 fiasco the wife and I never contributed to another human condition charity ever again. 'Kill all humans' --Bender, my hero
Yes but are you going to fill out the Census?

Too bad my tax return doesn’t have a checkbox option for “Don’t send me anything and we’ll call it even”. Mine will just immediately turn around and send it back to cover my tax bill.

Yeah I was thinking along those lines. What will I do? Hit submit on my taxes and send a good chunk back. What fun!

Hmmm... The bullet proof glass leaves a bit to be desired

Wishing it was closer to $1500 so I could get the new Asus laptop with the 4900HS.

I actually am considering getting one of them as it'd be a big step up in CPU, plus GPU would probably be about equal to my current desktop (which combined with better CPU would mean better performance across the board), and later I could get an Oculus Quest. Also would use it for some video editing and 3D modeling stuff. I'm wanting one of the Nvidia GPU ones for those reasons (one of the programs I use to do some quick video edits supports Nvidia's video GPUs not sure if its the encoder or what, but also wanted to test AMD and Nvidia's encoders in Handbrake, and I could do that in the same system (so could do quick easy comparisons).

Its the TUF A15. There's one with the 4800H and RTX2060, for $1199. I think they're all sold out (well, even the pre-orders, they're now saying will ship May 30th) and it'll be awhile and so figured I'd see what others come out. I thought about the higher end one that's smaller (its a 14" display) as it has USB-C charging ability (which would be nice, honestly can't believe that all laptops aren't this year, feels like it should be a requirement), and also a better display (240Hz supposedly Pantone certified so better colors, both are IPS though, but the cheaper one is apparently quite lacking in colors because it doesn't get very bright which probably wouldn't bother me that much), but the cheaper one has a bigger battery, and having numberpad (which I use a decent amount).

Guess I'll bide my time and see what other options come out, but will probably just miss out and then decide to build a new Zen 3 desktop instead or something.

I was surprised to see one of the sellers that kept popping up on Amazon was ExcaliburPC. I remember them back from the Athlon 64 days. I seem to recall they had some problems later but I might not be right (around the time seemed like lots of those did, ZipZoomFly and...I forget the one, I think the owner might have gotten arrested for fraud or something, MonarchComputers or something? I actually ordered a Core 2 CPU and board from them, think I ended up selling it instead of building a PC as I was getting burnt out on things at that point).

I want a "Lockerstor" NAS from Asus/Asustor. They make an 8 (bay) and a 10 (bay). The 8 (bay) model is $999 @ Amazon. The 10 (bay) model is MIA, for some reason, @ Amazon. No third-party sellers either.

A few of the 10-bay units "new" on Ebay, but with pre-installed drive combos, for way too much money. ($2K)

Has anyone gotten their check yet? Trump is going to be sending out those checks today!

I want money lots and lots of money. 😀

I think I'm going to spring for a Mockmill:

It's a kitchen gadget designed to mill wheat berries. Going into full prepper mode, haha! It uses special corundum-ceramic milling stones to make flour. I plan on using it primarily to make wheat flour and corn flour. In turn, I can use that for tortillas, bread, pasta, etc. It can do both corn flour (ex. for corndogs) and corn meal (ex. for cornbread).

If you store the wheat berries in a food-safe plastic bucket with an oxygen absorb in a cool room, it can last like 8 years. I'll have to do the math on bulk wheat berries with shipping, but only having to buy a supply like once a year sounds pretty nice! Plus you can do lots of other stuff with it...corn grits, grind up herbs & spices, etc. They start at $280 all the way up to $680, depending on the size, speed, and design you want. Pretty nice rig:

First i had ideas for computer parts, then i may be buying $600 in edibles hoping it lasts 6 months. If this is the end,i wanna be so baked every damn day. This Covid stuff messing with my anxiety and stuff these days since a walk in clinic visit, so yeah i wanna forget about it the best way possible and getting baked certain lets you slip away from reality even if for a little while.

Thinking about the edible idea, it sounds like more fun then anything else i had plans besides a 2080ti/3900x platform upgrade......

Well, we got our COVID Cash this morning.....and my wife's unemployment checks got the $600 boost, and it's retroactive to the previous week.

Gonna go buy some flea shit for the animals. New mower blades.

And maybe a 1/4 oz of gas.

Oh, and a 2070 Super. Been wanting that for a while...guess "free" is good enough to get me to "buy" it now. LOL!
