Acidity of tomato, compliments the salty, rich fattiness of bacon, & the mayo adds creaminess & lettuce gives a crisp bite.

Not in America, tomatos are vegetable in the US of A and thats how they are allowed to sell pizza in schools!....

Botanicaly (is that a word?) they are unquestionably fruit.

According to the supreme court they are veggies.

But whatever they are they make a BLT better!

This is really the only correct answer. Now bread.... Going to say Calabrese style baguette. Nice and crusty. Of course the classic submarine bun would be my second choice.

BLTs are best when you replace the tomato with more bacon. No sandwich is improved by adding a slimy raw tomato.

The bread is a big thing.

I've even experimented lately with sourdough and a few things, and double deckers.

You get it too toasty the whole thing can fall into a train wreck of building materials, I still like a good white thick bread that is semi-soft for flexibility to facilitate numiness to the ingestion area with no loss of ingredients.

What you are missing is a quality tomato, which is then the best part of a BLT. A quality tomato isn't a tangy chewy sliver, its a richly flavored juicy treat.

Whole wheat bread, mayo, nice thick slice of tomato, salt and pepper to taste, excellence.

OTOH in the UK a bacon sandwich is common and very tasty, but its no tomato sandwich.
