Part of the problem is that store bought tomatoes are rather flavorless. It's not hard to grow some of your own if you have any small area that gets full sunlight for a good portion of the day. Vine ripened and thin sliced, they are sublime on sandwiches.

it's not uncommon for gmo produce to be flavorless. they're bred to grow quickly, resist pests and shipping, and look good on the market table. cut open that supermarket lemon and you'll find an enormous peel, little flavor and less juice.

The awful tomato pre-dates gmo transmogrification. I recall David Letterman, back when he had a day time show, beating a tomato with a statue of the Empire State Building to no visible damage.

BLTs are best when you replace the tomato with more bacon. No sandwich is improved by adding a slimy raw tomato.

+1

I always ask for BLT minus the T, in fact I take tomato off every type of sandwich including burgers.

They are fine in a salad though.

It's all about the BLTA.
Creamy avocado is the perfect compliment to the salty, crispness of the bacon and the toast.

Agreed. They tend to harvest the tomatoes when they're still green and ship them over to your grocery store in several days.
If you grow your own and pick them when it's fully ripe, they're incredibly sweet like cherry tomatoes.

Pure bacon is so dense it overwhelms your mouth and you can't taste all the bacon-y goodness. The bread dries it out. Tomato corrects the flavor density and moistens it up.

well, I don't do mayo.

1) tried thick bacon + a slice of tomato inbetween 2 pieces of romaine lettuce.
-didn't taste the tomato

2) tried thick bacon, a slice of tomato and 1 piece of romaine lettuce.
- barely noticed the tomato

3) tried thick bacon and tomato
-eh..

so basically I need 2 slices of tomato per slice of thick bacon + 1 romaine leaf

After more taste tests, i have determined this is the best BLT:
- a romaine leaf wrapped around a tomato.
- Eat it

- then Eat the thick sliced bacon separately

Bacon is awesome!

But BLT's are just an excuse to eat more fresh, off the vine tomatoes (than just a salad) when tomatoes are in season.

You've probably got cheapo gas ripened almost tasteless tomato.
