Teens being considered adults was common back in the day. By that I mean before 1900s.
We had to update our laws to say otherwise.

They want rights as they existed about in the 1700s or even a few centuries earlier:
Women were property of men.
Blacks were property of whites
Unaccountable kings

They've been kicking and screaming to be brought into the 20th and now 21st centuries

Also be careful about taking history "out of context" .... when most folks were dead by 40 or so, 15 years old was early middle-age not "childhood".

You have to remember that West Virginia has a large "backwoods" population. They have a tough time finding someone to date/marry so they have to pick from the surrounding area that's mostly close and distant relatives. It's also tough to get a date when you look like this.

Age of consent is not required age for marriage, though. Not that different in some regards, but teens are going to have sex before reaching adulthood. Doesn't mean they need to be allowed to marry young.
