Went to the Supra meet last week *pics*

I went to dyno day in houston, texas, an event held by Toyota Supra owners where they go and show off their cars on the dyno. The winner was the red supra who dyno'd at 859rwhp and ~1000 flywheel HP, (way to show those domestics whose boss 😉 ) there was even a guy who had 905rwhp, but it was uncorrected, it was more like 85xrwhp corrected, and he got 2nd place. There were tons of other supras there with ranging from 700-850rwhp. Later on John Hennessey rolled in his 800HP Viper TT (cover of MT one) and dyno'd at like 830rwhp or something; there was even a Ferrari 550 there. Enjoy the pics

Two questions:
  1. Why RWD, not front wheel drive? (I don't understand how go-kart, boy racers can even relate!)
  2. Why not go head's up against domestics?
No replacement for displacement, eh? 😉

Ornery, there's a lot of "Camaro vs Supra" stuff going on around some tracks. I haven't gotten to hit those events or anything, but I'm sure the overall results are neck and neck.

You put the same mods in the Camaro that you put in a 600HP Supra, and it's going to be over 1000HP. There is no substitute for cubic inches or there wouldn't be a V-8 issue.

I was at an Audiworld / VW Vortex meet wednesday night and there was this dude in a Supra who kept peeling out in front of us....looked like a jackass.

Guess he wished his car was German!

I've seen just as many 9/10 second Supras as I've seen Camaros. Until I see a large number of V8's completely stomping those times on a regular basis, then I'll stick with my statement that a Turbo I-6 can pull the same times as a 5.7L V8 (keeping it street legal as well, remember).

Also, you can only go so far with a non boosted engine until you have to plop the money on a turbo/supercharger setup. And even if you want big power from an N/A engine, getting 2 heads ported and polished probably costs a lot, high compression pistons/rods? Gotta pay for 8 instead of 6. A Supra can be a 12 second car with nothing more than a boost controller, what would it take for a early 90's Camaro/Firebird to do that?

nice fart pipe on that ricer supra.

nice ferrari... when I was in Amsterdam I saw 3 ferraris in one night trying to navigate the central district and almost take out half a million pedestrians/bikes/XXX street posts

A Supra is as easy to mod as a LS1 in my opinion. Supra's have terrible suspension for drag racing though. This is coming from a domestic guy too.

<< a blower and some 110 octane? 😉 >>

In other words, lots of money 🙂

I've seen (and probably can find some pages) Supras run 9's on stock internals, pistons, rods....everything. There's one around my town running 10's on no NOS, stock internals. And I have two cars that pack similar engines to the one in that van you linked. Those 2.2 and 2.5s are some of the cheapest engines to make fast. There's pages and pages of guys running sub 12 sec quarters and have spent less than $1500.

You mean the one with 1000 horse power?

Yeah, ricer

<edit>

Don't get me wrong, I think it's ugly as hell.

It would have been nice to see someone kick the sh!t out of Henessey. The man is a crook and a coward.

Otherwise, on the Supra vs. LS1/Camaro/Firebird...

LS1s are low 13 second cars stock. A minority hit 12s, but usually on slicks and race fuel. MKIV Supras are mid to high 13 second cars stock. I've seen plenty of bone stock of both makes at the track. True, supras can be fast, but no just with a boost controller. Need at least half of the BPU setup to hit 12s which is a good $2500.

For the same money, an LS1 can easily break 11s. There is simply no replacement for displacement.

Supras are great cars, but to make them produce obscene amounts of power makes them unstreetable. You think that guy drives his supra with the boost fully cranked everyday? Hell no, he probably puts it down real low unless he's at the dyno or the track. You simply don't have to do that with V8s, the power is always there, never wavering. No turbo lag either. 😛

<< "In other words, lots of money...""Fewer than 1000 Supras are sold in the United States each year..."

Gee, I wonder why!? 😕
>>

Ornery - While I respect some of your arguements, don't talk out of your ass. Supras are sold in low numbers because there is a very finte amount of them since they haven't been produced since '98.

Ever think maybe they haven't been produced since '98 BECAUSE of the low sales? Ever think the low sales might be related to the HIGH price? And I'm guessing that's the reason for the low number of sales. Ball's in your court to explain EXACTLY why the sales were so low now...

First off, I hardly think that Supra is a "ricer" as ricers usually are slow as hell. The exhaust is fine and I dont see what the big deal is about it anyways. He obviously put that on there to squeeze out as much horsepower as possible. But anyways I think all those cars are phat as hell. I dont understand why everyone hates turbos and favors pure displacement so much. I don't care what anyone says, Supra's are badass cars, fast as hell, and easy/cheap to run some sweet times.

BTW, are there are more pics/vids of that event?

"...easy/cheap to run some sweet times.

The price of admission is about $26,000.00 for a used Supra Turbo without adding any mods yet! If that's your idea of cheap... 😕

Cant drop $2000 into a Camaro and have 420RWHP, and to the guy who said "fart pipe ricer"; you are probably an uneducated hick who drives a truck and thinks they own the roads.

And just fyi, hennessey and the 905rwhp supra went at it on the highway, and the supra demolished him.

And I would pay that $10k to get a used supra over a camaro, because everybody and their uncle has a camaro.

Yeah, I hate you, you hate me, what else is new.

And the red Supra's owner is named Mani, he's doing a lot of stuff lately, as reported in supraforums.com

What's with the price argument? Oh no, not a lot were sold back then, whether there was demand or not.......too bad even before F&F, Supras were in high demand, despite being discontinued......I don't see people clambering to pay $20,000 for a mid-90's f-body. But hey, what do any of us know, so I'll just stop here and let you flame on.

Nice pictures Pay. BTW, sohcrates, did you get any pix of that VW/Audi meet? I'd love to see a gathering of those cars too.
