Well, I finaly killed a CPU thru overclocking!!!!

Well damnit! I got this blue TBird 1GHz today and fired it up, then moved it quickly to 1200MHz. NO problem there, so I bumped it to 12.5 x 100, still worked, so I bumped it to 12.5 x 105, still working great.....so I go to to 12.5 x 108, boots into windows just fine. I'm thinking, wow, I'm at 1350 and this is a real special chip. I do notice that the Super Orb is getting warm and my temp is now at 52c. I decide it's time to take that off and put the Alpha PAL6035 on. I do this, and bump the fsb to 111MHz @ 12.5 (1388)
It posts, starts to load windows, then locks up. Damn, well still 1350 is still good.

So, I shut down and restart, pressing the insert key........wait.....wait....nothing. 🙁
It's dead. I tried everything. I took the alpha off and found that the damn slug was not contacting properly. :|

Well if it had to die Im glad it died form heat and not from just running at such high mhz........I will pray for all the fallen cpu in this fourm.....

The old saying speed kills, anyway I would of made sure it was seated correctly first & also tried default speed, this would not cost you much time, then try overclocking later.

🙂

What's the real world performance gain of overclocking from 1GHz to 1.1 or 1.2 GHz?

Will most 1GHz Thunderbirds overclock to 1.2GHz easily with the retail heatsink?

Dude that sucks a fat one. You really blew it, but I feel your pain man. I just lost a Duron 650 and it never even got to work once. It was a real waste of a blue core week 38 Duron 650 that I could have very well got to 1Ghz. Oh well my 1Ghz Tbird is coming monday, and I will make sure not to make the same mistake that you did. Sorry man, better luck next time.

Bad Luck, If I told you the number of times I made a voltage jumper adjustment on my board and disconnected the cpu fan and forgot to reconnect it!!! I have a blue core 1G as well and it wants to run real hot. Were you at 52C without any load? I hate to think that you have to supercool these things just to get them to run at spec 🙂 🙂 Anyway I've got a real early week unlocked Duron 650 and I'm ramping it up slow. It peaks at 51C, 1.8v with the boxed HS kit. This chip has a lot left in it when I decide to put an upgrade HS on it. As for the 1G blue core.... It just sits waiting for a system to go around it. I don't like those temps.
Cheers,
Joe

Compuwiz: I'm looking for some overclockable "Blue" core 1Ghz Tbirds. Where are ya picking them up?(or is this your secret source? hehe).

Sorry to hear about the burnt chip, it was definately a good one!!

Dexion, I can get them.

Anthony, that was a gross error on my part, that would have made a nice cpu. I'm gonna try and get more from the same batch. 🙂
