edit: I'm talking about the perfectly healthy fuck ups that abuse the system. I have no problem with our government helping out the disabled.

Believe it or not Louis Farrakhan shares the same opinion as you. He calls it a different form of slavery. Welfare assistance is fine if it's used properly but there are those who take advantage of it and make it so reviled amongst those who pay for it.

BTW, I used to be quite vocal with the same feelings. Nothing I say is gonna make it any different. Hopefully the powers that be will turn it around and make it so only those who are really in need can get the assistance and those who are able to work must do so.

I use to share the same sentiment as the OP. Than lost my job as they shipped them overseas. I had to go on welfare for two months before I could find more work.

Obviously a lot of people abuse the system, but it is the only means of survival for alot of people. How about address the reason people are on welfare rather than kill what is keeping the poor masses alive.

Its not normal for qualified people to be out of work for 20 years, or an entire lifetime. I think thats the point the OP meant, not the people who are really truly trying.

:thumbsup: You summed it up nicely. My gf works in Health and Human Services and I can't believe some of the people she tells me about. Definitely a lot of people taking advantage of the system and giving those who legitimately need it a bad name.

I don't understand the whole "movement" against those on welfare or welfare in general. Do they know anyone on welfare? I can assure you it isn't anyone sitting on their ass, doing drugs or whatever. Anyone who wants welfare at least in the state of North Dakota must prove for the last three months they've been looking for a job with verification. If it's a medical leave they must get verification from three doctors every three months - which now include drug tests. Even if they some how managed to get on welfare, it's only a about ~$1k per month. How the hell does anyone live on that or mooch?

Anyway, continue your crusade. I'll be looking at real money moochers like this whole Iraq war thing...

Like so many systems in place in America, it needs serious reform; however, to say it needs to go is a myopic consideration since the consequences, both economic and moral, likely far outweigh the exploitation.

Why not rage against Medicaid or even Medicare as well? Do you have any idea how abused that system is? Any action to address these systems needs to consider reform, not just wiping it all away.

IMO, to wipe away welfare would require you wipe away any notions of UHC, Medicaid/Medicare, etc. The loss of one system would simply put further burden on the others, because people without welfare will undoubtedly suffer more health consequences that will lead to greater costs.

I see no way away from it. I'd be more interested in hearing how to better prevent fraud.

OK, you do have a point which I tend to agree with. Now can we just cut off the ones who have been scamming the system for 3 generations? What about the illegals who come over and pop out a few kids? Do you think they are entitled to work the system the way they do?

There are a few classes involved here.
1. True needy who cannot work
2. Temporary needy who can work but can't find it.
3. Scum bags who are capable of work but won't do it ever and haven't for the last 15 years, doing just as their family before them. Get that government cheese! No need to work for anything. Let the man support you. :roll:

Of course not, but they're separate problems. The fact that some people scam the care system isn't an excuse to cut off those truly in need of all kinds of help. Some of that help, such as assistance in getting an education can actually pay back more than they cost. Other help is just because we shouldn't be a nation of greedy, self centered assholes.

Being forturnate enough to earn great wealth isn't wrong, as long as it's done honestly. Hell! I'd have loved to have gotten rich from my inventions and designs, instead of ripped off for them. But there are rational limits to what one person at the top should be taking in when their employees aren't making ends meet on a full time salary, and there are limints on what the rich should keep so many human beings are hungry or hurting through no fault of their own.

Many forturnate people are also generous without prompting and implementation through government assistance programs. Sadly, too many aren't. I doubt humanity will ever be able to care for all those in need, but what kind of monsters would we be if we didn't do what we can.

The OP's blanket statement that "Welfare needs to go" is bullshit. He may change his tune if fate deals him an economic bad deal and he finds himself in need, someday.

You wouldn't consider them lazy too? If I'm a hardworking farmer that has busted my ass year after year and gets paid money not to grow corn, I will become lazy real quick. It's not the recipient's fault 100% of the time, but once you start getting money for nothing it's hard to try to bust out of that cycle.
