Sounds like he gave up =/. Losing 64 lbs, then gaining 40 lbs of it back while completly destroying his metabolism in the process due to such an insanely unhealthy diet is far from being just a blip on the radar. It will be twice as tough now to lose those 40 lbs back due to the weakened metabolism (I expect a full relapse though). I posted my views on this type of diet on page 7 way back in December and why it is a bad idea, and unfortunatly it looks like I'm gonna be proven right after such a great weight loss run by the OP. Permanent weight loss is done with a lifestyle change, not a quick fix diet. You balloon right back up as soon as you get off this type of starvation diet.
I hope for your sake of those late pictures where you looked much healthier, that you don't fully relapse and get back on track, hopefully with a true lifestyle change.
