Good question.....I really think it depends on your relationship to the couple. In the asian culture, we usually give money if not a present.

Well I dont really know if that was a sarcastic response....
What I meant was if you are a close friend, best friend, or merely just an acquaintaince (sp?). Basically, theres not much expected of you if you were just an acquaintance.

I've always thought it was just an asian custom to give cash at weddings...but i may be ignorant.

No, at the gift-opening, a separate event usually held at the bride's house. Showing up to any of the official wedding events (service, reception, inbetween) with a gift is as mentioned, really bad form. 😛

Most guests dont show up at the gift opening... So its not bad form to bring a gift to the reception.. there is a special table set up there... The people normally at the gift opening is the family, and wedding party, and close friends.

The cost of diner/dance is at least $50.00 per person, and the church ++ other related cost could easily put the wedding to $100.00 or more per guest. (I haven?t had a wedding for myself, but my older sister wedding cost over $30,000 USD in 1991 & we had about 100 guest)
