AMD could have had $100 R9 290X and 750Ti would have outsold it, guaranteed.

Yep. AMD is in the precarious position of having to outperform Nvidia by 50% at the same price to potentially even up sales. I think I explained pretty well why in post #1207. For no other reason than brand image.

Im not sure about the 50% number, but I agree in theory. It is probably more like 20-25% IMHO.

The 980 was an exception because it was the 'flagship' offering, even if it wasn't flagship silicon, so to speak.

If you look at the 290x vs. the 970, I think this holds true. If we hold the 970 as relatively similar, the 290x is about 10-20% cheaper. I would venture that if the 290x was 20-25% faster, it would command a similar price as the 970.

A lot of people like to use the 980 as a comparison to make their arguments, but really it was just a product for those who didn't mind spending almost 2x as much vs. the 970 for ~15% more performance. Price be d@mned. Just saying...

This is the case for almost every product for sale everywhere.

Some brands command a premium, even if they aren't actually any better.

The brands that do not occupy that top spot in the market, have to go the extra mile to get sales.

Some brands, like Apple or Ferrari, pretty much have a strangle hold on their customer base.

It's very difficult to get those customers to move to any other brand.

I honestly think at this point 50% is close to the truth. I don't see AMD offering 50% better performance at any price bracket which means AMD looks to be in deep trouble.

I am a Nvidia brand fanboy, but if AMD GPUs would be 50% at similar price and power consumption range - I would not even look at Nvidia's offerings... :(

You could be right. It would be sad, if true, but there definitely is higher expectation on AMD for them to command the same price-point.

It would be way beyond "fanboy" to not purchase a card that was clearly that much better.

I doubt there are many such folks out there.

10% better? Yeah, they might not buy.

50% better? Many are going to jump ship.

I only upgrade if I'm getting around 50% better performance, and in either case I don't stick to a brand, usually go with whatever is closest performance to what I am willing to pay.

Even if they just bought a 980ti? I don't know. I really hope AMD releases something great, but frankly it might be a little late, if they do wait until the 16th-24th as some are saying.

Lets hope they release performance data today.

If none of the new amd cards offer any better, I think most would consider spending up to get the 980ti. I probably would do that if data on release does not justify amd prices.

I bought 2x 290X Lightning in February.

If I can sell those two and not really pay that much more (ideally none, but I get that may not be possible) and end up with one card that can match those two at their best, I'll be all over that. I'd love to ditch SLI/Crossfire, it can be inconsistent and you have to wait for patches and driver fixes, whereas a single card always has a smooth frametime with no microstutter. Driving 3x1080p monitors, and ideally wanting some AA, definitely demands some power.

I wonder how much I can get for them, considering one card I removed the stock HSF and put on a NZXT G10 and Corsair H75 because I had no gap between the two cards and the top card was roasting. Given how quiet that H75 can be, I might just put that on whatever card I get next anyway (unless it comes with one by default :)) because no reference or AIB cooler design can ever be as quiet as an H75 loaded with two EK Vardar F4-120's.

You could be right. But the vibe I get from many (if not all) Nvidia owners is they would not switch for any reason. Supposedly bad support, the myth of bad drivers, hate the name etc. performance doesn't seem to matter at all. I'm not just going by what I read on the various forums but also from people I know, when I suggest to look at Radeon cards they look at me like, uh no.

What if they just bought a 295X2?

There's a way to blow myths out of the water...

Definitely interesting, but how is this related to 390x pictures and rumors?

It isn't. It just demonstrates the effect of Team Green's viral marketing and extensive forum presence. People will buy a GTX 960 due to perceived superiority when they can buy an higher performing AMD card for the same money.

AMD will need to knock it out of the park with Fiji if they want to counter the negative perceptions people have about Radeon cards, and for all our sakes I hope they do.

Then if they have something that fits that image, noise, smoothness, industrial design comes into equation... We were at this point already

May % Share

AMD Radeon R9 200 Series 0.82%, +0.03% over April

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 0.64%, +0.19% over April

GTX 960 ownership is quickly catching up to the combined ownership of R9 2XX series lol

I saw that a few days ago and thought it was odd. I'm more likely to believe there was some mistake and the AMD cards are in "other". It could be true that the numbers on steam are pretty low though

That's just... sad. The 960 at the price it's mostly been sold has not been a good buy.

it's not a bad choice for the money.
performance is very close to the 285 on average, and it's a lot better for the Nvidia stuff (check Project Cars benchmarks for example), it's also the newest GPU available, with HDMI 2.0, HEVC decoding and all that nice stuff, power efficiency seems to be quite good

a lot of people want a new Geforce, and the 960 is that card, at its price it's a lot more affordable than the 970 and a lot faster than the 750 Ti, it's not hard to understand... Nvidia always enjoyed good sales for their "x60" series at around $200

The problem with the 960 is you can buy a 290 for $50 more that's 50% faster. There is no other upgrade increment that costs so little yet nets you so much performance. Its price is not competitive for people without green tinted goggles.

The problem is they need aa decisive win. That Just isn't happening. Neither company should win on every metric but if and doesn't they lose share. Nvidia needs to win one or two metrics and market those and they are fine. Which is why amd is in such aa badsituation.

This is assuming your PSU and case can handle a 290. Not all of them can.
