I was near the Chinese food counter at a grocery and an African American woman was getting Chinese food for her family, as she was turning around to leave the man at the counter stopped her and said "we have 8 piece fried chicken for $5.99, do you want any", she responded with "no thanks". I can't help be think he asked her because she was African American. So was this racist?

a guy who sells fried chicken

asking someone if they want to buy more fried chicken

It might have been racist, but I think it was harmless. For one things, black people seem to especially like fried chicken, though I have no data it's more or less. The problem with it is when people use it as an expression of hate - like they see friend chicken and say 'where are the black people! HA HA' or something to that effect, meant to be denigrating. I suspect this guy meant nothing more than to sell the chicken and there's no reason to think he meant offense. If he passed several to get to a black person...

I'd find it racist if he didn't ask me because I'm white. I love me some fried chicken and grape drink.

Racism is not the same thing as profiling. Saying that Japanese people like to sleep on hard beds doesn't make me racist.

Unless you somehow believe that liking chicken makes you better or worse than someone else. That would be a pretty crazy stretch though.

I think it's racist that you assume she's African American. She might just be African....or African Australian, or African European, or African Muslim....or....

This too. African American is an inaccurate phrase. Black is simply more accurate.

What if she's half black though? Half black is not black according to the other thread. It could even be considered Indian. lol

I thought most people went by the one drop of chocolate syrup in a glass of milk way of thinking about it. Consider them black or mulato.

I just think African American is an odd term. There are black people from all around the world. Not to mention most black people in America have never been to Africa. They are dozens of generations from it.

My black friends do not want to be called African American. I'd feel silly calling someone that.

Every black person I know says the same thing. I've always thought of it as 'S/He's an American*. * - WARNING WARNING THEIR SKIN IS DARKER THAN YOURS'

The PC movement has ruined this country.
Dr Ben Carson is my new hero:
"The PC [Politically Correct] Police are out in force at all times ... We have to get over this sensitivity ... PC is dangerous, because you see, this country, one of the founding principles was freedom of thought and freedom of expression. And it [PC] muffles people. It puts a muzzle on them."
