I can agree with the restaurant...there is a limit on all you can eat (much the same as unlimited bandwidth is really not unlimited).

We went to a nice buffet, didn't know they had a pretty major coupon out that the riff-raff was using.

The crab legs were being horded by an obnoxious couple. They actually had sat their chairs in front of them...anytime they were brought out they loaded up their plates with ALL OF THEM.

The restaurant finally stepped in and ordered them back to their table. They made a huge scene, but still stayed and tried the best they could. They practically knocked some kid over getting to them one time.

I was exhausted from a day of Sea World, normally I'd have gotten involved.

$9.95 doesn't mean 8 plates of crab legs

buffet places should be able to charge more. airlines should also be able to charge more if you weigh 3 times as much as a normal person and take up two seats. is it politically correct? Hell, no that's why I love it.

They can charge more. They just have to sell a meal that says, 5 plates of crab legs, everything else all you can eat. Additional plates of crab legs $4.

But they didn't, they sold him all you can eat from this entire buffet. They should hold up their end. I don't have a problem with the airline charging you more if you exceed certain dimensions, but they shouldn't come up to you with a card reader mid flight and charge you extra. Just make the details public before the transaction and customers will choose where to eat/fly.

yeah that was sneaky of them, but then again he comes in every week to eat sometimes 3 times a week for 8 months and eats $50 in food and expects to pay $9.95 each time?

It's called common sense and common courtesy and the fat dude just took advantage of the restaurant. One of my co-workers knows of a couple that have been kicked out and forbidden from certain places that have buffets. What they should have done was tell him before hand that they were going to start charging him double or forbid him entry(most places usually have a sign saying something to the effect that they have the right to refuse service to anyone)

But do the math 8 months times about 2 times a week on average, he probably ate $1500-$1800 worth of food and paid about $300 for it.

Why should the establishment have to eat the cost of someone who wantonly abuses the system?

Because the customer didn't break any rules? You're conveniently ignoring the fact that while the customer took advantage of the restaurant, they ALLOWED him to by being lazy about their own policies. What are you, a buffet apologist? If they don't want lumbering buffet monsters destroying their profit margin, they should clearly state the limits.

That cracked me up hehe

I just saw the update story at the local newspaper.

That guy wasn't so big <obese> in the black and white picture (4x4). He looked more like an old fart biker wannabe <full beard, black tshirt, weathered/worn out facial> .

Now he,his girlfriend/so, and her 7 years old son are picketing that restaurant and claiming that they were dicriminate agaist because they were fat (holding hand written picket signs>.

Unless the restaurant specifically says "All You Can Eat is limited to XYZ" then they can't limit how much you can actually eat. When I was younger, I made it my mission to hurt places that had "All You Can Eat." Buffets, Skippers when they used to only have "All You Can Eat" Tuesdays, so forth...I have no problem with them limiting certain foods to 3,5, 12 plates, IF they so state it in writing, either on the wall or on the menu...Some of the All You Can Eat sushi places we go tell you that if you take sushi, you have to eat the rice, or else you will be charged for a plate of sashimi...That doesn't bother me, and I almost always order a big sashimi plate anyway...

I avoid the Chinese buffets around here in the Houston area, they have so much MSG in their food that I once had a weird dream about Dr. Phil.

i don't understand why chinese restaurants got so much bad press for MSG. pretty much anything you buy these days (chips, bread, soups, etc) contains MSG, or monosodium glutamate. Even hydrolyzed proteins used in alot of products are just another form of MSG.

cause people are ignorant and will belive something if its repeated and said loud enough.

To be fair, most people don't have the time to robustly research every little thing they hear.

true. but msg is pretty common in all kinds of stuff and it is kinda important to know what you're eating. a few minutes on google would probably be enough to get an idea of what it is and what it does.

I got comped for the Mirage Buffet today in Vegas. Of course I ate like 2lbs of smoked salmon and a sh!tload of crab legs and shrimps. :)
I also got a lot of Sushi and just ate the fish and threw away the rice.
Of course considering how much money I lost while playing to get those comps, they still came out on the winning side. House always wins :D

False advertising? Sure, bring it to court and see who wins. I can guarantee it won't be the two gluttons.

While the restaurant is allowed to charge anything they want for their buffet, if they have a sign up stating $9.95 for all you can eat, then charge more, they're guilty of false advertising. I don't know how it could be any more cut and dry than that? A better way for them to handle it would've been to tell the two gluttons that they were abusing the system, and that they wouldn't be allowed back into the restaurant (since, like 99% of the places out there, I'd bet they have a sign stating they reserve the right to refuse service to anyone, and can exercise that without much of a reason). I bet with a good lawyer, they could even get a jury to believe the owners of the restaurant did a bait and switch.

As far as your guarantee.......tell us, how is it, being omniscient??? ;)

Lionel Hutz: Mr. Simpson, this is the most blatant case of fraudulent advertising since my suit against the film, "The Never-Ending Story''.

"Tis not a man . . . 'tis a remorseless eating machine!"

while the restaurant may have been losing money on this couple, I'm sure it was offset by the child. In fact, I'm sure the restaurant still makes a nice profit overall, even when this couple may eat more than the avg patron.

My wife and I have 5 kids--other than my 9yo son, the rest eat like birds. Assuming a chinese buffet, the rest might get a little lo mein, sweet and sour chicken, chicken on a stick and that's it. Plus ice cream for dessert. The plates are usually not empty, and we don't pile the food on for them. Did they eat $6 worth of food? No way. My wife doesn't like chinese food very much, so she'll usually stick to sweet and sour chicken with white rice only--and that is 1 play for $12. I may eat 2-3 plates. I don't pay for the youngest child because she just turned 3, but still--$12 x 2, plus $6 x 4 = $48. PLUS DRINKS at $1.49/each. Even if I ate 3-4 plates of crab legs only--the restaurant still makes money off of us.

I side with the patrons.
